Ponder Rib Injury Could Force Vikings To Play Matt Cassel Against Steelers

There is a chance the Pittsburgh Steelers might face Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback Matt Cassel and not starter Christian Ponder Sunday as the latter has a rib injury that could keep him out of the game in London.

According to the Associated Press, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier says Wednesday’s practice will “be a big signal in what direction we’ll have to go.”

Ponder has thrown five interceptions versus just two touchdowns so far this season and has completed 59.0% of passes. He has also been sacked 10 times thus far.

Cassell has faced the Steelers a few times during his career. As a member of the Kansas City Chiefs last season, Cassell was 11-of-26 for 154 yards in the 16-13 loss to the Steelers.

In 2009, Cassell beat the Steelers 27-24 despite only completing 50% of his passes.

That could actually be bad for us. I’d rather they play Ponder than Cassel.

right… i want to play ponder. LOL i been pondering over this possible victory. LOL

Turn over drought ends this Sunday!

Yes I agree! When a backup goes in the Steelers tend to make him look like the next coming of Joe Montana.

Sounds strange, but I agree. There isn’t much difference in the skill level of the two, but sometimes when a new, hungry QB comes in it provides a spark (i.e. Hoyer last week for Cleveland).
Don’t get me wrong, I think the Steelers can and will win either way, but I’d actually feel more confident playing the starter, if that makes any sense.

So true. The perfect example of this was the AFC Championship game at home when the D knocked Bledsoe out and in comes Brady.

  • Jeff

The funny thing is, Brady became the next coming of Joe Montana….. Well actually better

Ponder emerged from the Vikings’ first practice in the U.K. on Wednesday confident that he will play at Wembley Stadium.

It really doesn’t matter who the QB is with AP running the ball. I’d prefer Cassel because he’s a pocket passer and the Steelers defense this season has been hurt because they face semi mobile QBs. Ponder=Locker

  • alevin16

But not just him, there have been plenty of others who were nothing more than journeymen who come in and light them up.

  • alevin16

Well it helps when you have a videotape of the defense 😀

Not sure I really care about Ponder vs Cassel…seems like about a wash. What I’d like to hear is that Jared Allen is out.

Oh lawd. back up QB coming….sheesh.. will Matt Cassell like us up..
