Report: Steelers WR Antonio Brown Fined For Penalties Committed Against The Bears

According to Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown was fined in excess of $16,000 by the league on Wednesday for the two penalties he committed Sunday night in the 40-23 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Brown, who will reportedly appeal both fines, was first flagged during the game for a facemask call on Sherrick McManis in the third quarter as he was going out of bounds at the end of a short punt return.

The second flag and fine came as a result of a late hit by Brown on Bears safety Chris Conte following an interception late in the game.

Despite those two incidents, Brown did manage to set career-highs during the loss with nine receptions, 196 yards and two touchdowns.

Below are animated gifs of both penalties.

Fined for a face mask seems crazy!

  • DoctorNoah

I approve of both of those penalties. 🙂 and I would start arranging a collection on his behalf but I’m not sure he needs it.

a stiff arm that ends up as a borderline incidental facemask? So fines being given for contact in the course of play? Kinda like fining a pitcher for a wild pitch that hits an umpire off of a bounce.

  • Eric

The facemask is not fine-worthy, but the hit on Conte seems jussstified. Were the amount of the fines disclosed?

  • Steve

How about the hit Cutler put on Golden. Shouldn’t Cutler be fined?? He was out of the box and put his head down.

  • Nolrog

I didn’t see anything that was remotely borderline there. He clearly grabbed the face mask well beyond what would be considered a stiff arm.

  • David

    Who cares it football.

  • Joseph Sparksman

The fine for face mask is ridiculous. They are quickly turning football into a no contact sport. These rule changes and fines are ruining the game.

  • T R

that was not a late hit the dude was not down by contact.. on what brown was suppose to just two hand tap him right.. or pull the flag off his hip.. get real NFL… and the facemask was not even blatin.. he barely moved his head. good lawd.

  • Aric Brown

my big question in this incident with conte is: What happens if Conte would have fumbled as a result of ABs hit? – i would guess there would be no fine and he actually would have been commended and praised for having a never say die attitude. People never bitched about Zach Miller the old dolphins linebacker jumping on the pile in kneel down situations he was always praised for trying to make things happen

  • Shannon Stephenson

    thats our beloved NFL.

  • Dan

Both fines are BS. He was stiff arming the tackler and put his hands on the facemask which is perfectly legal. He did not have a grasp of or control the faskmast. On the INT, it does appear that the runner gave himself up, but still I don’t think they get the same protections as a QB. Considering this all took place in a fraction of a second, I think it’s a stretch to call it malicious. Perhaps there was time to avoid the hit and just touch him down, but it ain’t like he was wearing a dress or anything.

  • Victor

Obviously the facemask penalty was not the facemask itself, rather the guy’s neck. Look at the Bears player’s neck bending, it not safe to bend like that.

  • Phil Heidenreich

I agree with the penalties, but I dont think either are particularly worthy of a fine.

  • Phil Heidenreich

Do players regularly get fined for hitting a sliding QB? If so, that deserves a fine, but I dont think thats the case so he shouldnt be fined for either. The penalties were given and thats should be the extent of it. I doubt it happens again, but call me out if it does.

  • Phil Heidenreich

As far as I can tell, SNF crew said he would be fined so he was.. that seems weak.

  • Lizard72

Isn’t that the purpose of the stiff arm? Bend the head and neck away so you can avoid the tackle and get extra yards?

  • Brandon Andrews

    stupid fines just dumb

  • blackandgoldBullion

I am not surprised. A few years ago the Steelers defense was winning football games and scoring on defense, sometimes scoring more points than the offense. Then a funny thing happened…. They started getting fined like crazy for some hard hits. Remember the Cleveland game?
The WR is flying across, sees Harrison and ducks right into him, thus knocking himself out. I know, James caused 2 concussions that game. Do you realize that it was the first time a player had been suspended for a football play in the history of football?
Call me crazy, but the league used the Steelers as an example, attempting to castrate them in the process. Are they a shell of their former selves for fear of getting suspended and fined? Not quite, but now that they are 0-3 and forgotten, I believe they should start playing like they used to in the past. Other teams “finish the play”, which is a kind way to call a late hit.
Come on, Steelers! It’s time to start hammering people again. Hopefully Clark can lay someone out soon. Does the league conspire at times? Perhaps. Did you see the Lineman the other day pushing and punching Troy all the way to the sidelines way after the play? Did he get called? No. No wonder Woodley came to his defense.
Thank you Mr. Woodley. You have to send a message and defend your players. But I digress.
Anyway, I’m calling for the Steelers to start playing some Steeler defense again. I want to see some hitting!
    Go Steelers!

  • steeltown

    Neither is fine worthy

  • Chris Ranieri

Same rules that apply to quarterbacks apply to all players… Head-first slide – you are still a live player and may be downed. Feet first (like shown in the GIF) – and you give yourself up, and the play is dead. I must be in the minority that believe that hit of Brown’s was lame.

  • schlong

    Such bullshit

  • Brandon Bohl

Wow so getting fined for a stiff arm now huh. What is the nfl coming to, that was such a bullshit call.

  • Steeler Wheeler

I’m somewhat OK with the fines…but…McManis should get fined for a shitty tackle and Conte should get fined for a terrible slide.

  • scott

I am so sick of this modern day nfl its for pansies lets get back to when real men played football the 70s for example, and the so called finish is a piece of crap.

  • JC Chuta

Goodell is a Steeler-hating lunatic. Why isn’t “she” (Goodell) looking at the thug Ravens, or concentrating on Green Bay’s Clay Matthews who had gone out of his way to dispose of Kapernick (and had made it quite clear he was trying to do that days before the game!) Ms. Goodell needs to quit immediately and hand the job to a real man!
