Source: Former Steelers LB Marshall McFadden To Be Added To Raiders Practice Squad

According to a source, former Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker Marshall McFadden will be added to the practice squad of the Oakland Raiders.

McFadden, who was a member of the Steelers practice squad last season, looked to be a lock to make the Steelers 53 man roster this year following the release of Stevenson Sylvester.

Instead, the South Carolina State product, who went undrafted in 2011, was waived during the final round of cuts on Saturday as the team decided to keep rookie linebacker Vince Williams and special teams ace Kion Wilson instead.

McFadden led the Steelers in total tackles last preseason with 15 and matched that number this past preseason as he played exclusively with the second-team defense.

The Steelers decided to keep only four inside linebackers on their 2013 53 man roster initially, but they did sign undrafted free agent linebacker Terence Garvin to their eight man practice squad on Sunday.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Still don’t get this decision. Even if Kion Wilson is a “better” special team player but not by that much- special team take 11 men to succeed together, not one and McFadden who I have became a fan of, would have been a combination with Vince Williams. Oh well.

Our players are being picked up left and right showing the potential on the players we let go. I believe we will get Hawthorne on the roster and will not be picked up because we probably let him know we were going to get him on the roster. The only thing that makes sense.

  • Kyle Owens

Why did the Steelers put the time, money, and effort in developing guys like McFadden and Alameda only to let them walk? I hope the next episode of the podcast can shed some light on this.

  • T R

im so confused right now… Steelers just win and all your decision will be ok.. but right now.. i am just confused..

  • Mikey Greensheets

Great point about player development. Just have to trust the coaches at this point.

  • reg38

This answers the question who will be replacing Spaeth on the roster after he is placed on short term IR on Tuesday. With McFadden gone it will be Terry Hawthorne.

  • Garrett Hunt

    Stupid Move

  • Matthew Marczi

They also put time, money, and effort into developing the guys that beat them out for their roster spots, presumably because they felt those players were better than the ones they let walk. Both McFadden and Ta’amu were second-year players, anyway, it’s not like a huge loss.

  • Anthony Renzelli

Step away from the cliff people. These are practice squad players and the season will be decided by the starters and second string players.

  • Shea Fahr

Exactly and if we ever need McFadden, we can simply sign him off their practice squad if there are injuries.

  • gene mann

Yes that true about these PS guys and have to belive the FO and Coachs know better

  • Matthew Marczi

Ha, in fact I just wrote about the Steelers still having the ability to sign him off the Raiders’ practice squad after moving Spaeth if they wanted to in the article I sent it to Dave for publication in the morning. As you said though, I think it might take an injury for that to happen, seeing as how they opted to carry Garvin on the squad over McFadden.

  • Shea Fahr

    HA! Sweet!

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

I think the steelers owe their fans an explaination or an apology for why they bring in talent with potential and get our hopes up for the season routing for these prospects to make the team an have an impact like they did during ps then just out of no where poof their gone cut and where left stuck screaming at the tv becauase guys like whimpy and gay are making the same stupid plays or lack there of and their still are able to call themselves steelers blasphemy i tell you

  • Mark

No loss. Vince Williams is better and with a higher upside. Hopefully this also means Sean Spence has a chance at some point.

  • MrTeabag

McFadden can be taken on the roster at any time. Wait until tuesday to be upset about this move. He may take Spaeth’s spot

  • Superdriller316

I don’t think they try to sign him to the 53. After reading your other post about our new O Lineman. I looked up the PFF grade for LB. I don’t know how they grade so I’m not sold 100%. Baxter graded out the highest of our cut LBers at 3.1. Next was A. Robinson with a 2.6, then Rolle and Garvin with -0.8, and last was McFadden with a -1.0.

  • Matthew Marczi

As I said, I don’t think it happens either. I think the signing of Garvin pretty much sealed his fate.

  • Matthew Marczi

So you don’t think Hebron Fangupo and Vince Williams are “talent with potential”? They don’t get your hopes up for the season? You’re not rooting for those prospects?

Rosters plus practice squad are 61 players deep. Preseason rosters have 90 players. 29 people have to be cut.

  • Christopher Wilkes

OMG, is anyone going to care about these guys once the season starts? We talkin bout practice squad players???

  • Christopher Wilkes

lol, yeah I’m sure they’re sending you a personalized letter of apology for your grief.

  • Christopher Wilkes

Not likely or they woulda probably signed him to the practice squad already.

  • Matthew Marczi

Agreed. I think they made up their minds on McFadden and Hawthorne when they put Garvin and Smith on the practice squad. Spaeth’s replacement will likely either come off the practice squad or from another team’s cuts.

  • Berlusconi

Roster cuts are barely ever a win-win situation for player and team, so no matter who is getting cut, there will always be lost upside and often be lost development time. At least i don’t like to see players leave the Steelers, and i certainly don’t like to see them in Raiders-uniform. Good thing, the regular season starts and we have 5 months of football ahead of us to make everyone forget about that.

  • steeltown

    Im thinking Baxter

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

I would have cut whimper gay carter and brown kept mcfadden baxter arnfelt wilson i know ur probably gonna say theres no replacement for whimper not even team waivers personally i would rather have dwyer blocking than whimp hes a waisted spot

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Basically theres no sense to what the fo just did keeping players with more downside than upside then cut players that actually played well

  • RedCarpetDefense

Well what if Steelers kept McFadden and cut V. Williams because “he can’t cover” and comes off the field on 3rd downs? As much as we’d like to can’t keep’m all.

  • Informed reader

If they think the guys they keep have more potential, or can contribute more right now, then those are the guys they should keep. Just because somebody has hung around for a year or two doesn’t mean they “deserve” a spot. If a new guy without their knowledge of the team can beat them out, then I would rather have the new guy. I assume the coaches, who are at every practice, in the meeting rooms, in the training rooms, etc. know more about these guys than some fans on a message board.
