Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey Tore His MCL & ACL; LB Larry Foote Ruptured Bicep

The Pittsburgh Steelers have likely lost center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker Larry Foote for the season as both will require surgery because of injuries suffered in the season opening loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Pouncey tore both the ACL and MCL in his right knee in the first quarter and Foote ruptured a bicep in the fourth quarter.

According to head coach Mike Tomlin, kicker Shaun Suisham injured a hamstring in pregame and they will have see where that goes.

In addition to the other injuries running back LaRod Stephens-Howling needed an MRI on his injured knee and the results are not yet known. Cornerback Cortez Allen suffered a right ankle sprain.

Kelvin Beachum replace Pouncey at center and Kion Wilson replaced Foote at inside linebacker.

The Steelers will certainly have roster moves upcoming as both Pouncey and Foote will likely be placed on injured reserve as early as Tuesday.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • LouPGH

Actually, David DeCastro tore Pouncey’s ACL and MCL.

  • Berlusconi

McFadden back to Pittsburgh? Or is Williams really going to be the starter?

  • Josh English

It’s football, people get injured.. even by their own teammates.

  • walter mason

Give DeCastro a break. We will need him. Wasnt Pouncey having a strange pre-season? Now he can spend more time in court supporting Hernendez. Its unfortunate but we will still be able to win with what we have and possibly bring back Malecki as back up. We have no Injured to return option left to use so I guess its IR. Get well soon Mr. Pouncey.

  • LouPGH

Okay. That doesn’t make what I said any less true.

  • John21

Please explain to me what DeCastro saw (a D-lineman already engaged) and what he was going to do (illegally cut an engaged lineman) and how he could possibly have missed so badly and took out his own guy (does he need glasses? color blind?) That was so terrible and unnecessary.

  • Lamarr56

Well thanks DeCastro, there goes our season.

  • walter mason

I couldnt see the game but I heard that DeCastro was really shook up. The man is our future. We need him. Pouncey is gone, DeCastro is here.

  • Russ Ruffing

I consider myself pretty reasonable and not one to overreact to a bad loss. But that was as bad an offense as I have seen in 40 years of watching football. Sucks that Pouncey got hurt but seriously, would it have mattered much this season? The O-line is atrocious and got man handled all preseason and now into the real season.

BTW, Foote gone for the season doesn’t really hurt us. The D will still be decent but how can you blame them for today? They were on the field the entire football game.

I will be stunned if we win four games this year. Stunned.

  • LouPGH

I saw it. It was a stupid, stupid play. He should feel bad about it. I know he didn’t do it on purpose, but I have no idea what he was doing.

  • LouPGH

I agree 110% with the first sentence.

  • Mkeller

It was unreal what he did. Look before you leap. There was nothing that makes me understand what he was thinking.

  • Guest

That was an unbelievably bad decision by DeCastro, but the cut would’ve actually been legal, if successful. Steelers lineman get cut on a regular basis, trust me..

  • kakello34

Next man up. The standard is still the standard…lol

  • Mkeller

Pretty sure if a team can’t overcome an injury to their center they may not have been so good anyway.

  • T R

    Retirement for foote. Damn

  • dajon

a louPGH I feel u. call it like I see it decastro blew it on so many levels. his block would’ve been illegal, and he blow our centers knee out. another great first round pick made by tomlin and Colbert. this is a poorly coach team.

  • walter mason

LOL you had to say that LOL. Adding a little humor to a sad situation.

  • dajon

larry foote is our starting LB enough said. wasn’t suprised

  • John21

I was screaming in Round 4 to draft Barrett Jones C/G from Alabama. At lease we have Landry Jones

  • sean mcmartin

You are right. It was legal and the ravens do it every game.

  • Mkeller

DeCastro feels terrible and he should. When he actually sees the play he may never forgive himself it was so god awful.

  • Shannon Stephenson

with no back ups with game experience

  • Shannon Stephenson

That was my first thought honestly.

  • walter mason

We can and we will. Remember the Super Bowl? We hardly skipped a beat with Legursky. It will just take some practice.

  • Dan

Perhaps this is premature, but I can’t help but starting to look at 2014 draft sites.

  • sean mcmartin

Exactly what the Corporate Puppet Tomlin will be spewing out as excuses of how they didn’t execute.
Pouncey out for the year. Put a fork in em..
Three years in a row of waiting all preseason on the hopes they can improve..Not going to be a fun year for fans..
Still a fan but I have watched enough Steelers football in the last twenty years to know this is not a championship team and Even worse is the best QB since bradshaw has no chance to have a good year or even survive it with this crappy team.

  • walter mason

I agree with all but the last sentence. We should be able to win 8 or 9..

  • kakello34

By the time they rebuild from where they are now, Ben will be old. And he was sacked 5 more times today. I believe Landry is the future at QB

  • walter mason

    LOL

  • Nolrog

For Fs sake. And we came thru pre-season pretty healthy too.

Who’s the back up center? I guess we could have used Legs.

  • Untitled

Barrett Jones was drafted before Landry dunce cap

  • Nolrog

I belive Ben will be on the team longer than Landry will be.

  • walter mason

That new guy Cody Wallace we signed off waivers. He didnt dress.

  • Nolrog

Barret Jones went at pick 113 to the Rams, Landry Jones was 115. That doesn’t make it a good pick though.

  • Shannon Stephenson

    lmao!!!

  • Mkeller

Yeah….don’t think so. Eventually bad decisions come back to haunt you. That’s what we’ll all be watching this year.

  • walter mason

OMG dunce cap? lots of laughs here today to ease the pain

  • Untitled

No, but that’s like complaining that the Steelers went with Jarvis Jones over Eric Fisher.

  • Reese Dare

    OK –

    1) Beachum takes over at center. Definite downgrade from Pouncey a few seasons ago (not sure about now).

    2) Move Worlids to MLB to take over for Foote. Start Jarvis at ROLB.

    3) Give Brown and Sanders Growth hormone so they suddenly become effective.

    4) Realize the mistake that was cutting Dwyer and keeping Redman and lure Dwyer back with an unlimited supply of cheetos/beef jerky.

    5) Go 6-10 :(

  • T R

boy thats alot of easing to do too.

  • pittsburghjoe

I wonder if we will see Aaron Hernandez wearing a hat that says “get well soon Pouncey”?

  • chris ward

Steelers couldn’t start off the season any worse. Losing Pouncey and Foote to season ending injuries. A poor offensive performance giving up 5 sacks and only putting up 32 yards total rushing. Defense played solid though being that they were on the field most of the game only giving up 13 points.

  • pittsburghjoe

Pouncey is overrated. I wish him a speedy recovery, but I dont think he will be missed. As soon as Beachum gets up to speed, he will do just fine.

  • Jazz

That was a low blow; totallt unecessary.

  • RW

He’d have been out for the year anyway. No Injured to Return necessary.

  • RW

If Landry Jones is our future we’re f*cked.

  • Jazz

I agree, Pouncey is overrated; I still hate to see what happened to the kid though. Especially by one of his own teammates. I have no idea what DeCastro was thinking or what he was doing on that play. What a disaster!

  • Jazz

I was actually hoping they would have taken this kid as well. I believe they could have waited and picked up Landry Jones in the 5th round. I’m sure he wasn’t on no one’s radar in the 4th. Colbert does well in the 1st round, beyond that, he is average at best.

  • Cody Younkin

I see C.J. Mosley in our future

  • sean mcmartin

If Ben audibles every play to shotgun and can quick release. He might

  • walter mason

We can lure Dwyer back with Adderall.

  • Shelob9

Yah, it was dumb, Pouncey didn’t need help, but getting hit by your own guy is a fairly common way for a OL to hurt a knee. I can’t remember which of our lineman hit DeCastro’s knee last year in the preseason. I think it was Gilbert, not postive.

  • r4kolb

The good thing is in Pittsburgh there are a lot of bridges so the lines wont be too long!!!

  • r4kolb

On a more serious note….Foote was invisible this game anyway. Getting old. Sad thing is there was no one on roster to beat him out of the position. Under .500 season ahead boys n girls.

  • HopalongCassidy

Losing the highly over-rated Pouncey isn’t that big a deal. The entire o-line needs replaced. They all suck and they are the reason that the Steelers are going nowhere. They can’t run block and they can’t pass block. However, they are real good at stepping on each other’s legs and causing injuries to each other.

  • RedCarpetDefense

    Cheeseburgers = kryptonite

  • Shannon Stephenson

didnt have to ease the pain….it was so bad my pain receptors all burned out.

  • Richard Edlin

Losing Foote hurts as our backups have little experience but it probably means fewer missed tackles: Foote’s career is over. Losing a poor linebacker shouldn’t hurt us too much so long as Timmons can take over.

I think losing Pouncey probably means a couple of additional losses … so, we’ve probably gone from an 8-8 team to 6-10. I think 4 wins is an overreaction at this stage but it wouldn’t be if this is typical of the offense. No point having a franchise QB if you can’t protect him: without Pouncey, I don’t expect to see much of Ben this year.

We have no real backup in the squad and the salary cap problems make it very hard to recruit anyone after this season. It’s fair to ask whether the Steelers cut the wrong backup RB too. I suspect that the Steelers have a bullet to bite at season’s end and there will be a high player turnover as we DO rebuild. Polamalu and a few others should be looking at paycuts or releases until we get this under control.

  • RedCarpetDefense

Guy Wimper will be the next man up if these injuries continues. Scary

  • walter mason

I think you are referring to the Hernendez comment. I respect Pouncey and he is a great player. I wish him well. However I wont remove the comment. It is what it is. He didnt look himself this preseason and maybe Im trying to make lite of a bad situation. We can still win with a below average center. Remember whats his name before Pouncey? We won the Super Bowl with a below average center. The season is not yet over.

  • westernsteel

You are right, decastro purposely injured pouncy!

  • westernsteel

Yep, the Steelers weren’t very God with him, and aren’t very good without him, doubt his injury will decide the outcome of the season.

  • westernsteel

I agree, who is gonna score points for this offense this season? They scored one touchdown all game against the titans?

  • westernsteel

One of their wins should have been against the titans at home. Not sure at this point I can find think of Nine teams they could score points against.

  • westernsteel

Jones is a joke, no way he is the next qb after ben is done

  • westernsteel

A guy who didn’t dress today….may start next week? Yep, sounds like the Steelers offensive line!

  • westernsteel

Cheetos, beef jerky? I’ll take it over redmans two fumbles today?.. not surprised

  • westernsteel

That’s a pretty honest observation! They can’t block in the running game, Ben had little time, and once again, a self inflected injury

  • Reader783

I feel so bad for Pouncey. He plays so hard and works so hard, and I rarely ever see him complain or get in trouble, but he can’t seem to finish a season out. Good luck to him in his recovery. He is one of the good guys in my book.
