Steelers Claim CB Antwon Blake Off Waivers From Jaguars; Waive CB Isaiah Green

The Pittsburgh Steelers were busy on Labor Day as not only was punter Zoltan Mesko signed to the roster, but free agent cornerback Antwon Blake was claimed off waivers as well.

Blake, who was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars, led the Jaguars special teams units in 2012 with 12 tackles.

In order to make room for Blake, cornerback Isaiah Green was waived. Green very well could wind up replacing cornerback Devin Smith on the practice squad later this week.

This is a move to help shore up special teams and you can expect that Blake will be dressed on game days.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

So we essentially have 3 CB’s who play defense and two who play ST. Good thing the rookie safety can cover and play in the nickel or dime.

  • Eric

I hope this is an actual upgrade of CB’s. I will never understand the Maleki/Wallace exchange, especially with that pay differential.

the guy is 5’9 tall, doubt he is going to see much time in the secondary….our lack of depth at corner is very scary!

  • Shannon Stephenson

This kinda saddens me. I saw someone else wrote that we pick our favorites out of the young guys to make it and you see 1 or 2 of them make the roster and take joy in seeing someone who was against the odds make it only for it to be taken away. I understand it is a business and we are putting together the best team possible and am all for it but what a crushing blow to Malecki, Butler and Green which 2 seemed to have beaten the odds only to fall short once again…good luck fellas!!!

  • Christopher Wilkes

It’s a great thing, and I would think we’re going to have a pretty good special teams unit too as long as Danny Smith can get them playing mistake free.

  • steeltown

I agree about Malecki, but hopefully Green is signed to our PS soon

  • Garrett Hunt

What if the Steelers signed Tebow as a practice squad tight end? Couldn’t hurt, and I bet he could block

  • steeltown

Nope, Tebow is way beyond any PS eligibility

  • JohnnyV1

Special Teams is the 3rd phase, and has to be sound, but just as long as their mindful that this is a passing league and 3 CB’s is a thin group. Perhaps this will get addressed w/ a Spaeth move to IR. It does make me nervous.

  • Garrett Hunt

Oh yeah. Probably not worth a roster spot then.

  • steeltown

Indeed, I know Shark and Golden are interchangeable and can seemingly play nickel but damn Brown and now Blake purely for special teams play… just hope Ike and Cortez stay healthy

Maybe he turns into a solid pro CB.. guess we’ll see

  • CW

Could always sign him as an upgrade over the interception prone Landry Jones. ;)

  • steeltown

Yea that’s his problem, no one wants to give him a precious roster spot, we are seeing this offseason first hand just how important each roster spot is..

  • Superdriller316

Is this guy the new DVD? I saw that he runs 4.32….

  • Superdriller316

I hope they can find one that can play both so we can get rid of Brown…

  • cencalsteeler

Couldn’t agree more. Makes one a little nervous doesn’t it?

  • Shannon Stephenson

I like Tebow as a person but I am not sure what the love affair is with this guy is?

  • cencalsteeler

Well, I picture Blake and Shark standing there staring at the punt returner now, waiting for Meskos kick to finally hit Earth.

  • steeltown

On a side note this kid is built pretty well for his size, he’s only 5’9 but he’s 200lbs, he’s strong and fast

  • Shea Fahr

I could elaborate on that for you but I will not because there are some people that visit this site that may have a big problem with my take on it….Let’s just be glad that he will never be in a Steeler uniform.

  • Garrett Hunt

First he has more want to than any other player and is a winner. We need winners on the team imo. Also, he is talented and has pretty good size for a tight end. Obviously no guarantee and a project at best, but that is why I said practice squad.

  • T R

Tebow has said countless times that he wants to be QB not a TE. plus thats derespectful to the TE position to think he can swictch to a position that players have been playing their whole life to perfect

  • T R

thats derespectful to the TE position to think he can swictch to a position that players have been playing their whole life to perfect

  • GoSteelerz

They should have got rid of Brown instead… They are really enamored with this guy it seems and I don’t understand why. Yeah, he’s good on special teams, but he’s no Steve Tasker, or Kassim Osgood. At least they were worth keeping primarily for special teams. But they could actually play their positions a little bit when they had to, unlike Brown… This is really aggravating me…

  • Superdriller316

I hope he’s a hard hitter. That size and that speed, he could hurt some one.

  • Gautama Om

If a solid CB becomes available then we can possibly him up and get rid of CB Brown since this Blake acquisition will cover up for Brown’s cut and ST contribution.

  • Christopher Wilkes

Well, ya know what. You shoulda been nervous all camp long, cause Green was not a great cornerback, and he beat out all other options. This group is super thin, but with safeties that can play the slot you might as well have bench CBs capable of contributing on special teams.

  • Garrett Hunt

    1. Tebow hasn’t been in the position of being out of the NFL unless he switches position so we do not know what he would do.

    2. Not disrespectful to other players. Just praise to Tebow that he is football smart and a hard worker to make the transition. Do you think Denard Robinson switching to wide receiver is disrespectful to all the wide receivers?

  • T R

Denard Robinson, actually played running back and receiver as college player.. TeBow was out of a job last year until New England pick him to cut him. He was ask to switch possibly switch position from a team last year and he declined. He was practically out the league then.. so much he was offer a job as a QB coach for women league and a postion in Arena Football. which he declined all them. So lets see if he hits rock bottom again..

  • gene mann

I hope we can get Green back to the PS speed kills and the kid seemed to show he can play CB. as far as Malecki is not a major loss and it seems like the coachs did not like him as a backup

  • joed32

He cannot go on any ones practice squad. He has too much playing time. Has anyone even seen him catch a ball or block somebody?

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

  • treeher

Tebow will go to CFL and try to play his way back to NFL. He’s not a drop back QB and needs to be in a system that will take advantage of his skills. Interesting that the RGIII’s of the league get that opportunity but not Tebow, who won 2 national championships.

  • Steeldave

This is about the Steelers not Tebow. Who cares that much to go on and on having a debate over f..king Tebow. We would never allow a circus like that here in Pittsburgh
