Steelers LB LaMarr Woodley Doesn’t Want To Be A Part-Time Player In 2013

If the Pittsburgh Steelers wind up using a three-man rotation at outside linebacker similar to the one used during the preseason, you can bet that LaMarr Woodley isn’t going to be too happy about it.

“Part-time player? I don’t think so,” Woodley said Wednesday, according to Alan Robinson of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “The only time I’ve been a part-time player is due to injuries these past two seasons. Other than that, no, I never have been.”

While he only played 50 snaps during the preseason, Woodley appears to be fully recovered from the ankle and hamstring problems that he suffered through last year. He is scheduled to make $3.6 million in 2013, so you can’t blame him for wanting to earn every bit of it.

During his talk with the media Wednesday, Woodley also made a point to say that playing-part time is difficult to do and that a rotation system has never been used in Pittsburgh since he became a starter in 2008.

During his Tuesday press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin said rookie Jarvis Jones will play Sunday in the season opener against the Tennessee Titans and he didn’t rule out the possibility of Woodley coming off the field for a few plays as well.

On Thursday, Woodley was again asked about the possibility of some sort of rotation happening this weekend and he answered the question with a grin.

“I guess we’ll just have to wait to Sunday,” he said.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

I hope he isn’t a part-time player..we’re not paying him to be a part time player that’s for sure! If he’s healthy he should be on the field..let Worilds and Jarvis split time.

Now obviously if Woodley struggles with injury (again) then yes, Mr. Woodley you will again be a “part-time player”

  • Mkeller

Agreed. He can get injured on any play at any time. If he’s healthy he should be on the field. The only rotation I want to see is Jarvis rotates in on the right side and Worilds rotates out. End of rotation.

I like the rotation idea more so on the right side and maybe spell Woodley a little here and there to keep him fresh. But of course he’s no dummy, he knows the team will ask for money back on the remaining years of that contract if he’s a PT player so I don’t blame him…

Put the best player on the field.

  • Jeff

LaMarr, no one wants you to be a part time player in 2013. It’s up to you to make sure that doesn’t happen…. just saying!

  • steeltown

Agreed..cant blame the coaches for giving Worilds reps on the Left side during preseason,. they’re just taking precautions

  • cencalsteeler

It sounds like he feels a little threatened, which is a good thing. Remember what Colbert said,” no position is safe”. I say it’s a nice little head game Colbert is playing….Time to step it up Lamar, it’s time to earn that paycheck!

  • kev4heels

way to eliminate plays out of the game? be so good they can’t let you sit on the sidelines.

  • ATL96STEELER

Threatened…I got hint of that too, but I don’t think it’s coming from Colbert. He knows a platoon will mean less snaps, and less snaps = less $.

Woodley ready to go Tomlin says it to media so you have something print.

  • Douglas Andrews

For 3.6 million he’s playing as long as he’s healthy and I mean every play. Realistically I can see Woodley getting a breather here and there will only help the D and help Woodley be more effective. The real rotation is probably going to come down to J Jones and Worilds. If we can get any production out of Worilds it’s gonna be a plus as we seem to be in good hands with J Jones and Woodley.

  • DAYSNWAYS

Simple, play Woodley, if he doesn’t produce swap him out, same goes for Worilds, whoever is most effective, irrespective of money should play, we played Woodley and Harrison last season and neither were fit enough or produced, where did that get us?
