Steelers Gave Newly-Acquired Punter Zoltan Mesko A One-Year Contract

According to Pittsburgh Steelers Communications Coordinator Burt Lauten, the contract signed by punter Zoltan Mesko is for one year.

Mesko will earn $630,000 in 2013 and will be an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

The Steelers will take a wait and see approach with the former New England Patriots punter. Should he perform well this season, the team can slap either a franchise or transition tag on Mesko next offseason and then work out a long-term deal prior to start of the 2014 season. This past offseason, the franchise tag for punters was $2.977 million.

The Steelers can only use the franchise or transition tag on one player, so unless they use it next offseason on either defensive end Ziggy Hood or wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, should neither receive an extension between now and Sunday, Mesko would figure to be a prime candidate for it.

I hope this guy has a stellar year

  • Douglas Andrews

Second that last year we gave teams too many short fields, while teams put us in some bad field position. That puts alot of pressure on our D. Would be nice to have a weapon that could pin the opposition deep into their own territory. Longer drives for the opposing teams would give us more opportunities for turnovers.

good thinking on the franchise tag.

  • steeltown

I was thinking transition tag w/ right of first refusal

    Franchise tag for a punter……:) That’s funny.

  • Dom

The Steelers in my memory used their last 2 franchise tags on Jeff Reed – So it isnt that crazy

It’s actually smart if you have a good kicker or punter, the contract average is not that high.

  • steeltown

Actually it is, nearly $3MIL is pretty high.. the highest paid Punter in the League makes $3.9MIL… Kickers are a different story, but even then only the TOP guys avg $3MIL or more per season

One and done with this guy. I do not believe in using franchise tags on punters. If he is good sign him to a long term deal but 3 million is too steep considering our cap situation.

  • Kolie Oak

Does anybody know anything about the guy who beat out Zoltan?

  • JohnnyV1

Given their current cap situation, it would be moronic. If we can’t fit Keenan Lewis in at corner, then we can’t fit a punter in at that slot.
