Steelers Sign Eight Players To Practice Squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now set their initial eight man practice squad for the 2013 season as guard Chris Hubbard, tackle Joe Long, defensive end Brian Arnfelt, linebacker Alan Baxter, linebacker Terence Garvin, running back Alvester Alexander, cornerback Devin Smith and wide receiver Justin Brown were all signed Sunday after clearing waivers.

The Steelers surprisingly did not sign fifth-round draft pick Terry Hawthorne or second-year linebacker Marshall McFadden to the practice squad, but there is chance that one of the two might be added back to the 53 man roster next week if tight end Matt Spaeth is placed on injured reserve with the designated to return tag.

Brown was selected in the sixth-round this past April, but was beaten out for the fifth wide receiver spot on the roster by Derek Moye.

Hubbard, Arnfelt and Baxter were signed as undrafted free agents back in April while Alexander and Smith were signed to the roster during training camp.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Shannon Stephenson

There will always be at least one surprise. I am not a fan of Alexander but it is understandable, I love Garvin and am all for it, Smith was the shocker for me. I do not remember much of him but when I did it wasn’t good except for that one exceptional pick he had.

  • Matt Manzo

This is crazy! No McFadden or Hawthorne on the ps, what are we all missing?

  • cencalsteeler

Hmmm….Smith must have outshined Hawthorne, interesting. The rest of the pieces fit the puzzle.
I assumed Hawthorne was a lock with the praise handed out by Lake earlier in camp. Smith did register a pick and had several nice tackles, though.
I think Hawthorne still makes it with Spaeths spot.

  • Eric

Devin Smith beat Hawthorne for a PS spot. Curtis “Toast” Brown makes the team. Keenan Lewis leave in free agency. If I didn’t respect Carnell Lake as much as I do, I would be asking some really tough questions right now.

  • HiVul

We have a roster spot for Landry Jones but not even a PS spot for Terry Hawthorne? I don’t understand their priorities at all.

  • dgh57

Wow! Devin Smith over Hawthorne! Sad to see McFadden go!

  • gene mann

I have to think one of the two Mcfadden or Hawthorne is back on this roster.i would like a reason what Smith did to out preform Hawthorne

  • JohnnyV1

No Ta’amu, McFadden or Hawthorne. I find that interesting and not something I saw coming. But I will wait to see the happenings over the next few days. I would not be surprised to see one of those 8 listed gets picked up by another team.

  • Dwayne Ferguson

I am shocked about both! I thought Terry hawthorne was supposed to be the next coming of Ike Taylor way they raised him early on…..
I just don’t get it. Wonder when we will find out their thinking on this?

  • NW86

Wow, Devin Smith over both Hawthorne AND Victorian, who saw that coming?!? And no McFadden??
So one of them is likely to be added to the 53 soon, probably McFadden. Maybe the Victorian experiment is over, and they really don’t feel that Hawthorne is 100% healthy yet? I don’t know, just speculating…

  • Brian Miller

Agreed…how can they know for sure Hawthorne is not good enough?

  • dgh57

Is it possible players like McFadden & Hawthorne didn’t clear waivers as the reason they weren’t resigned to the PS?

  • GoSteelerz

Yes, yes, yes!!!! Smith, Arnfeldt, Garvin, and Baxter! I was hoping those guys would make it at least to the practice squad. If some people go down, we have guys that can come in and play off the practice squad… I feel quite a bit better after this. Curtis Brown on the roster has me concerned, but at least we have Green on the roster and Smith on the practice squad who can come in and do a good job in the secondary. Let’s go Steelers! :D

  • Putter

I suppose it’s possible that one (or both) didn’t want to sign with the Steelers. Why not sign with a team that isn’t as solid on defense?

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.alberico.73 Andrew Alberico

Is it possible that Landry Jones may someday be the starting QB?

  • dgh57

That’s a excellent way for a player to land himself on a bad team with no chance at any post season action! Not saying we will make the playoffs but I’ll take my playoff chances with the Steelers none the less!

  • Matthew Marczi

I don’t think no Ta’amu is surprising at all. The team has no use for a fourth, scout team nose tackle, and that is basically what he would be. Practice squad players need to help the starters prepare for their next opponents, it’s not just the eight guys they liked the most that didn’t make the cut. I will admit I was surprised to see Devin Smith over Hawthorne. I’m sure his injury played a big role here. Availability, etc. McFadden…I’m not too surprised that they decided to go with Garvin. He has more upside and versatility. I do think that the replacement for Spaeth will come from the practice squad, and that will open a spot for one of these two on the squad. If that’s the case, I think it will be McFadden, because they already have 11 defensive backs with Smith.

  • Jeff Johnson

This is crazy and they will pay for some of these decisions that they are making

  • Jeff Johnson

Carnell Lake was very high on Hawthorne after he was drafted and they don’t even put him on the PS. They are messed up right now

  • Jeff Johnson

Those are the 3 players that are not on the PS that bother me. They should have been on the 53 man roster

  • Jeff Johnson

This list sucks with missing 3 good players

  • CW

Could be Hawthorne did not want to sign or it could be Hawthorne’s knee is going to take longer to rehab than originally thought so he really can’t be useful on a PS for some time. Knee rehab is more than likely the issue, he did have surgery on it not that long ago and after the only preseason game he played in it could have become an issue.

No idea about McFadden. Maybe they saw so much potential with Garvin that keeping McFadden seemed like the wrong move.

  • joed32

I’m sure that Lake had plenty of input on which DB’s were kept.

  • Bob Graff

What’s crazy is not cutting into our 53 man roster and adding Starks for Wimper, Mcgahee for Redman,

  • Steelers32

    Ta’amu
    signed by cards

  • John Mazza

yeah saw this coming from a mile away. if they werent deep at cb hawthorne would be there too

  • TxSteeler

Read where Ta’amu was picked up by Steelers west. Haven’t heard anything about Hawthorne.

  • bgsteelfan

    McGahee is long past done.

  • Shannon Stephenson

In the NFL QB’s are a premium and unless you have good QB play you do not go to the dance. Jones was a projected 1st rounder going into his senior year but didn’t have a great season thus he fell. The Steelers felt they may have drafted a huge steal at the premium position. Give the guy a chance to prove himself.

  • Shannon Stephenson

I am sure Brown wasn’t a guy Lake wanted but our ST coach wanted and Lake has very little say on whether the Steelers want to overpay for a CB when there are countless other needs on the team.

  • steeltown

Sooo glad we got Baxter and Arnfelt back.. alittle surprised about Hawthorne…. me thinks McFadden will be signed when Spaeth goes on IR

  • Danny Delouize

i am surprised Hawthorn wasn’t signed to practice squad..

  • Danny Delouize

They would have never cut Jones..They would look stupid for drafting him if they did that…Hard to judge a middle round rook qb his first season but Jones stunk..

  • Danny Delouize

I am surprised Butler beat out Moorman…

  • steeltown

    Indeed

  • RW

No. He was picked as a career backup.

  • RW

He’ll never be any kind of long term starter for this team with Ben at his age. Because this is a QB-driven league, it’d be a good idea to groom an accurate career backup who can win. Also, the guy is pretty smart – should be good with the clip board.

  • RW

Starks is just as bad as Whimper at this point (read: new ZBS). But Whimper should go, regardless. I’d rather play with 10 players on offense than put him in the game.

  • Bob Graff

700 yards rushing last year in 10 games. He is a far Superior to Redman . The word is he’s in fantastic condition. And Redman is what????? Injured and proven not to be a reliable back.

  • TxSteeler

Also read where Malecki was waived and we signed G Cody Wallace from Tampa Bay I think.

  • steeltown

Cody Wallace was a damn good college player, Center and OG I think they see something in him, he has some upside I think

I also think they might sign Malecki to the PS and then release Hubbard

  • Bob Graff

Not to be a pessimist but we only have two 0-lineman who can block. Whats it matter the scheme your using the problem is a personnel issue not scheme. These are essentially the same guys who couldn’t block last year and now we are going to scheme them off the line. The Steelers wish it was that easy.We have done a horrible job in the personnel dept. over the last six years and it’s just starting to show.

  • Matthew Marczi

Malecki is not eligible. I personally think this was a bad move. I haven’t reviewed Wallace’s preseason tape personally yet, but he’s gotten awful run blocking grades from PFF.

  • Matthew Marczi

You’re complaining about the same people who couldn’t block last year yet you want to bring Starks back?

  • bgsteelfan

Because football is as simple as total yards, right? Never mind that he played in a division with weak run defense. Never mind that almost half of his yards and all of his TDs were against teams with horrible run defenses. Never mind that he put the ball on the ground 5 times least year. Never mind that it was a totally different offense, or that he would not likely sign for cheaper than Redman. Or that Redman has a higher career YPC (admittedly the law of averages in in play here, but it bears mentioning). Never mind that he was released at 32 years old because of injuries and no other teams have shown interest in him this offseason for a reason…

Nope, none of that matters. All that matters is that 700 yard number.

  • bgsteelfan

    10 players vs 10 players + Whimper = same thing anyway…

  • Jack Hambert

Anyone surprised that we didn’t pick someone up in waivers? Has to be someone cut (Maybe a TE) that could have immediate impact. Maybe I’m smoking dope…

  • bgsteelfan

He’ll be on the active roster as soon as Spaeth gets the IR designation.

  • bgsteelfan

    I think it’ll be Hawthorne.

  • steeltown

Damn.. that’s right, yes I disagree with this move then if at the expense of losing Malecki outright

  • SteelerFanInMD

They cut Ta’amu, a 4th round pick that they moved up to pick by dealing a 6th round pick, so I don’t think they are keeping Jones just to not look stupid. They must see some long-term potential in him.

  • steeltown

We’ve gone to and won SuperBowls with less talented OLines

  • Bob Graff

Right because Starks is better than any lineman on our roster. Like i said this is a personnel problem. Changing scheme doesn’t change the fact that our current 5 starting lineman worries no one in this league. This is going to take some time to fix.

  • TxSteeler

Well he has spent time with teams that use zone blocking. Maybe they thought he was an upgrade from Malecki, who knows. I would be happy if we never see him on the field because our OL is healthy.

  • Bob Graff

    doubt that,

  • steeltown

2008 and 2010 seasons.. just to name the most recent

  • bgsteelfan

“Right because Starks is better than any lineman on our roster.”

You should just stop talking right there. Nobody paid attention to anything after that nonsense anyway.

  • Matthew Marczi

But Starks played every single snap in the team’s worst rushing attack in almost two decades. If the Steelers have a personnel problem, then Starks is very much a part of it. You are contradicting yourself.

  • steeltown

I guess maybe the assume they could always re-sign Malecki later if the Cody experiment doesn’t work out

  • Bob Graff

those teams had a defense capable of stopping anyone – or +14 a game and there lines were far superior to what we have today not even close. if you remember Ben had time to throw those passes.

  • steeltown

J.Scott, Kemo, Legursky and Flozell Adams are not more talented than our current starting five… and to be honest I don’t ever remember Ben having time to throw

  • Bob Graff

that team was built to just not make mistakes and the d WILL WIN IT.

  • Bob Graff

Go ahead and kid yourself this team has a major problem on the line and it hasn’t been fix.

  • steeltown

How do you even know what guys like DeCastro and Adams are capable of.. very small sample size of this OLine as a whole to make any kind of judgment

    Depth is an issue, yes

  • Bob Graff

you are overestimating what we have. we were suppose to be a power running team last year but wound up 27th in the league. the most negative runs in the league

  • Bob Graff

i saw enough to know any d end can beat adams to the edge even the ref told him get up on the line son you can’t line-up in the backfield

  • bgsteelfan

It’s not about kidding myself. I know there are issues on the line. It’s about knowing football, and if you think Starks is better than anyone we have, PARTICULARLY in a zone blocking scheme that does not remotely fit Starks, then you clearly don’t know football beyond what the media spoon feeds you.

  • TxSteeler

Good point. Though he’s not ‘Fleet of foot’, maybe he’s a road grader if they need him.

  • Matthew Marczi

I like your positive attitude, but I have a feeling Cody is going to stick. I plan on giving his preseason tape a looking and doing a breakdown of one of the games. I hope I have a better opinion of what he has to offer afterward. Here’s to hoping for a pleasant surprise.

  • Bob Graff

That and the 952 yards from scrimmage in 10 games. compared to Redmans 650 in 16 games

  • Bob Graff

This zone blocking is a bunch of bull . If Adams is left to protect Ben’s blindside. I know what zone he’ll be in and it ain’t particularly on northside, but rather rather in the middle of oakland in some hospital ward.

  • bgsteelfan

Redman didn’t play 16 games, and he only started 5 to McGahee’s 9. McGahee had 35% more touches and you are trying to spin it the other way around…

But why let things like facts or critical thinking get in the way of your opinions?

  • bgsteelfan

Bull or not, it is what they are going with. And Starks does not fit the ZBS AT ALL.

  • TxSteeler

Thanks Matt, you and the rest do a helluva job on here getting us info. Let us know what you think of him.

  • walter mason

    Funny satire…( I hope).

  • Bob Graff

I think i’ll stick to the fact that Willis Mcgahee is a better back than Redman. Or you might want to spin it like Tomlin and think Redman is worth his spot on top of one of the depth chart of one of the leagues worst rushing teams

  • bgsteelfan

WAS a better back. Is is entirely a matter of opinion. Given which one is currently employed, I’ll take the opinion of 32 NFL GMs over yours, thank you very much.

  • WIINGY

Starks is washed up, and in his prime he was a below average LT.

  • steeltown

    Hear hear

  • steeltown

    Agreed

  • steeltown

Maybe you are underestimating, DeCastro, Pouncey and Adams are athletic OLinemen, so is Beachum, all better suited for a zone scheme, a scheme that Gilbert has familiarity with from college.. the sky has not fallin just yet

  • steeltown

Now that McFadden went to OAK I think they’ll sign Baxter to the 53man, if they wanted Hawthorne they would’ve signed him initially to the practice squad instead of Devin Smith IMO

  • dgh57

I always thought that when a team wanted to upgrade a position like RB that they would try to get younger not older! I’ll take Redman over McGahee any day because of the less wear & tear on his body any many more years to play. How many more years does McGahee have left? 1 maybe 2 years at the most!

  • Ahmad

Alan Baxter and Brian Arnfelt were must haves and I’m happy both were able to sneak on the PS.

  • Shannon Stephenson

In 3 years Ben will be 34 and have taken a beating in the NFL for many years. I am not saying BB career will be through nor am I saying Jones will be the starter if he is but if Jones progresses nicely and BB starts declining could we not see a change at QB? Just a thought.
