Steelers Still Evaluating Players Let Go By Other Teams

The Pittsburgh Steelers trimmed their roster down to 53 active players on Saturday and since that time they’ve already replaced three of those players with players who were let go by other teams. During his Tuesday press conference, head coach Mike Tomlin said they are continuing to sift through more players, and that leads one to believe that the roster shuffling isn’t done.

“We’ll continue to compare the bottom side of our roster versus the field like all teams do this time of year,” said Tomlin. “You’d like to think it’d get off in a fluid manner in terms of 53, but that’s just not the reality of today’s NFL. There’re a lot of quality players out there we’re in the process of evaluating them and actually yesterday acquired a couple of them.”

If anything, Tomlin let his players on the bottom end of the roster know that no job is safe right now. In addition to adding center Cody Wallace, defensive back Antwon Blake and punter Zoltan Mesko, the Steelers also signed linebacker Terence Garvin off their practice squad on Tuesday after placing tight end Matt Spaeth on the injured reserve list with the designated to return tag.

Garvin’s vacant spot on the eight-man unit was filled by wide receiver Kashif Moore, who was waived on Saturday and now that cornerback Isaiah Green has cleared waivers, there’s a possibility that he could be signed to practice squad prior to the team practicing on Wednesday.

The Steelers head into the 2013 season with depth issues on their offensive line as well as their tight end and linebacker positions, so they will not hesitate to upgrade moving forward, if not this week, possibly after the Sunday season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

I find it very surprising that they haven’t replaced Devin Smith with Isaiah Green on the PS, they obviously thought more of him on final cut day, why not now…… I guess we’ll see today

  • Shannon Stephenson

agreed! I’m sure it is coming.

  • CW

I don’t think they could move him to the PS until today.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Steelers cut WR Moore and add CB Green later today.

  • steeltown

No I don’t think they’ll cut Moore, they’d probably swap Smith for Green.. I doubt they keep 12 DBs between the 53man and PS

I’m still trying to get my mind around Alvester Alexander being on the PS. He wasn’t good. He was 15 att for 43 yds @ 2.9 yds/carry. And he had one run of 14 yrs where he had a giant hole, so if you take that one out, he’s 14 att for 29 yds @ 2.1 yds/carry. Maybe he did better in practice than he did “inside the stadium”…

In other words, they can keep Devin Smith and let Alvester go for Isiah Green. Or pick up a back who offers more value.

They need some cannon fodder for the practice field.

In previous years we have kept 5 RBs on the roster. This year the 5th RB is on the PS.

Is Garvin a ST’s guy also?

  • steeltown

At this point, yes.. he has potential though, he was being used at inside and outside LB during camp and preseason and he has experience playing Safety in college… an intriguing prospect

  • JohnnyV1

In previous years we had BA as offensive coordinator who did not believe in fullbacks, now we have an OC who does, so we have 1 FB, which, combined with 4 RB’s gives us 5 players for that position.

  • bgsteelfan

They just signed more, they aren’t going to cut him.

  • Bob Graff

Let’s go Steelers with this new scheme of zone blocking i here we can block anyone now. Why didn’t we try this early??? Now we just need to take that kick off and run it right down there throats. how can they stop us now???.

  • dgh57

I edited my comment to exclude a FB because the subject was about RBs!

  • CW

Forgot about Smith… who they cut before resigning Green.

Not meaning to nitpick but back in the day a Fullback was a Running Back; aka Franco Harris, Jim Brown, Larry Csonka to name a few. Teams utilized a FB and a Halfback but in the modern NFL, Fullbacks are generally not ball carriers and as someone said many teams prefer 2 TEs with no FB.

  • dgh57

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I prefer to separate the 2 positions because they are listed as such, RB and then the FB. So to me there are 4 RBs, 1 FB, and a RB on the PS.

  • walter mason

Yes I understand and the terminology of FB has changed over the years.

It comes down to protection and opening holes, I know pouncey is out for the year but it isn’t as if the rest of the offensive line is a bunch of cast offs. Still a lot of high draft picks sitting there, which means that they have talent and potential. I think someone needs to work with them and the team about changing up the snap count and using that to get that first half step.
