Steelers To Call Back Dwyer Or Batch? Alvester Alexander Also An Option

The Pittsburgh Steelers might have made through the preseason relatively healthy, but they sure didn’t make through their first regular season game that way. Not only did they potentially lose center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker Larry Foote for the season against the Tennessee Titans, they also lost running back LaRod Stephens-Howling as well.

With Stephens-Howling now out for the season and rookie running back Le’Veon Bell potentially sidelined for another week or two with his sprained foot, you have to wonder if the Steelers might be on the phone right now calling either Jonathan Dwyer or Baron Batch.

Batch was waived during the first round of cuts, while Dwyer was let go a week ago Saturday during the final round of cuts.

The Steelers still have Isaac Redman and Felix Jones until Bell returns, but will likely need a third for the game next Monday night against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Neither Dwyer nor Batch have much upside, but both at least know the offense and both can play on special teams should the need arise.

Dwyer worked out for the New York Giants last week following his release, but was not signed.

The Steelers also have Alvester Alexander on their practice squad right now, so he might very well be an option until Bell is ready to play.

As far as other free agent running backs that are currently available, Michael Turner, Cedric Benson, Willis McGahee and Ryan Grant have all yet to find homes, but one would think the Steelers wouldn’t have interest in that group.

Dwyer won’t sign, he stole Tomlin’s KFC bucket

  • Putter

when 33 put the ball on the ground for the second time, Colbert was on the phone with 27…..

  • Ben Headrick

Sucks to hear the news about Stephens-Howling. My guess is they give Dwyer a call.

  • Douglas Andrews

I’m thinking Dwyer gets a call

  • T R

They better hurry can call Dwyer cause Wilson might be cut from the Giants after he done fumble 3 times tonight

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

Dwyer and either Marshall McFadden or Sylvester for ILB

  • Christopher Wilkes

If Steelers don’t use everything in their power to get Dwyer back then I’m gonna lose a lot of respect for this current FO. Who knows maybe he doesn’t even want to come back. I’m not saying Dwyer is the answer to our problems, but I’ve always believed he’s a better back than Redman, and if we go with Batch or Alexander I’ll be absolutely disgusted. I wouldn’t mind kicking the tires on the 4 FAs you listed either. This sucks!!!

    yea misdial

The carousel of running backs, has been very below average at best. The run blocking alone has been awful. So, instead of regurgitating the old talent (Batch, Dwyer) we’ve seen there acts and it wasn’t good at all (in my opinion) try signing a vet, at minimum.. Can it really hurt? Of course not. What I’ve been seeing, has been blinding with agony to the corneas. Howlings, good change of pace back, not an every down back and the 3rd quarter result, torn acl. Felix, got blown up by a LB, the result, Benny got plowed. Resulting in Felix, watched game from sidelines except for a play or two. Redman, enough said. Last hope is Bell and hopefully, they don’t rush him into the lineup and we don’t even know how this guy will run with that injury, that nags for months. Does anybody think that any defense will be afraid of the passing game? Manny, Antonio, J.C and Wheaton(whenever they let him in)? No TE but have a lot but not worth a damn, at all. This is offense is a total nightmare. Some kind of seasoned RB couldn’t hurt this team so why not give it a shot, until Bell can be a contributor. Today was as bad as it gets and I hope we never have to see anything like that again.

Tryn so hard not to overeact! I already smashed my ps3! And yes I’m over 18yrs old. Starting to believe all the tomlin and Colbert bashers too! Questioning draft picks and depth, player development, future salary cap problems….I’m losing my mind! We have to win next week or I might have a heart attack.

  • Matt Manzo

That’s what scares me the most! Seems like all we have right now is hope, and that’s not how you win in the nfl.

  • Kevin Gobleck

I am hoping for maybe McGahee or Turner so that he could teach our backs a thing or two while he is there

  • Phil Heidenreich

I gotta agree with this – Dwyer had more production than Redman last season, what made them think it’d be different going into this one? Having said that, I’d rather see Willis McGahee join the team. He’s a vet that can run and catch when we need him to.

  • Bill Bobertson

Mike Tomlin has turned this team into a bunch of soft no talent losers. He should be on the hot seat, but he’s not because of the way the Steelers do business. Sometimes I wish they’d just fire a guy.

  • Michael Pearce

Dwyer never should have been released in the first place. Redman should be cut and Dwyer and Batch resigned.

  • Tom

If they are going to call Dwyer, they better do it quick. The Giants really could use him right now.

  • Pete

Not sure if Dwyer or Bettis or Barry Sanders would make a difference. This O line is unfortunately very young and needs time to jell. The next 3 games before the bye are not going to be easy. I miss Hampton already. McLendon is not Hampton but I hope he can grow into Hampton. Jones I’m impressed with. We have something good in him. There is no Aaron Smith on the D line. They miss him. The Steelers are missing a lot of what the old players gave them and just need to muddle through this and find a way to win.

Relax, you’ll live longer. The Steelers lost, you did’t.

It is a shame to waste another year of Roethlisberger’s talent. I was watching other games and imagining what Ben could do with the protection that other QBs are getting. I’m to the point where if the team has another .500 year … which at this point is optimistic … then Tomlin must go. Ultimately, he is responsible. Naysayers will say that the players have to perform, but he is the one coaching them and putting them on the field. The buck has to stop somewhere.

  • Shannon Stephenson

I disagree Dave, I think both Dwyer and Batch have upside but is it enough to warrant a roster spot? I believe Dwyer is a NFL HB not so sure about Batch but I bet Dwyer will be back.

  • Matt Manzo

I felt like Mclendons speed was there but not the strength to hold or push the line! Would’ve liked to of seen Taamu n Fangupo in on the goaline score!
