The Terrible Podcast – Talking Steelers Vikings Recap, The Blame Game & More Episode

terriblepodcast

Season 4, Episode 27 of The Terrible Podcast is up and co-host David Todd and I roll through what happened in the Pittsburgh Steelers loss Sunday in London to the Minnesota Vikings and that includes telling you who we thought played good and who we thought played bad.

We spend a lot of time talking about the play of Ben Roethlisberger, the offensive line and the defense as a whole. We focus in on the missed tackles and explosive plays allowed in the game as part of the game recap.

As promised, David and I get into a heavy dose of the blame game as the Steelers now sit at 0-4. We talk about the changes that we both feel need to happen and take a look forward as it relates to the rest of the season.

As always, a few more talking points are mixed in over the course of the show.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Callentown

PLEASE don’t tell me that the Steelers look like they’re about to ‘break out’ of this funk anymore. Seems clear it will be a slow, long almost imperceptible change, if it’s a change at all.

As Ben says, the Steelers are now the worst team in football officially, even though this has been the case since opening day (along with the Jags, of course, right Ben?!)

  • SteelersDepot

It helps to listen before commenting. It is a tip.

  • Callentown

Yeah, I didn’t mean that in a mean-spirited way. Just past time to accept it for what it is. These guys stink.

  • T R

Good Podcast.. have you guys looked on any practice squads and seen anyone hiding out that might can help on Tackle or OL?

  • Bell Cow

Good podcast. I’m glad you pointed out the recent draft class failures because that is essentially what has created this mess. However, I think you’re both too quick to dismiss the possibility they may decide to transition from a 34 to 43 next season.

  • Mike Carroll

Nice tip of the hat to Willie Gay. He has been a bargain free agent as a 3rd CB. It’s all about cost/value and Gay is on the positive side of that ledger whereas most Steelers are not.

Glad to hear Timmons’ name finally brought up since there’s been no mention of him on the field. It’s very troubling to think Larry Foote may still have been holding his hand his 7th year in the league. Not surprising though, I’ve never thought as much of Timmons as others do.

  • Fritz Baughman

So, at what point do the Steelers start looking for O lineman on Craigslist?

  • willie colon

I am just shocked they lost to Minnesota, it seems like they are taking turns with certain people playing bad each week.I gues we are ordinaty NFL Team

  • JesMan

IMO why not shake things up , maybe not to the extent of what the Browns did, but firing Haley and firing (bench) Adams may not help as much as everyone thinks, but WHY NOT? We are 0-4 could it really be any worse with these 2 gone? How can it possibly be worse. It could also be a spark to the team that noone’s job is safe. I do Not think Adams technique is gonna save him if it gets better, did you see people bump him like people bump me when they are shopping at the mall then just go right past him? Getting rid of Adams to the bench and then after the season to the couch is the number one move that needs to happen IMO. Haley is another story, screen play screen play , run the ball when your down 17, can anyone call WORSE plays than what I have seen from him so far this season and last? No. I think they need to not be afraid to pull the trigger and get rid of some people on the team right NOW. Baltimore made a change at OC in the early weeks in the season last year to Jim Caldwell If I remember correctly, now did they do any worse last season than before that? No they won the Superbowl in fact because they saw a problem , got rid of the problem in the midst of the season and it corrected the problem, Steelers need to seriously think about doing the same.

Yes there is a lack of talent on this team, but there is also a failure by the coaching staff to play situational football and make adjustments. Dick Lebeau is back to doing what failed last year against Oakland and other bad teams. On third and short, you don’t play the CB almost ten yards off the receiver. Why not press the receiver in those situations instead of handing the opposition a first down? I thought a light when on for Lebeau a couple of years ago when he had the CBs press the New England receivers and they held Brady in check, but he’s right back to the old unsuccessful ways. And what adjustments are being made by Haley at halftime? Adams is getting beaten continually and there is little effort to give him help. Where are the short screens or slants to keep the D-line honest? And why isn’t Moyes being used to run the corner patterns in the end zone instead of Heath Miller? I’m not saying take Miller off the field, but use him over the middle. The talent level may not be great, but the coaching staff isn’t helping the players succeed.

Great podcast today, guys. With the way this season is going, I think a podcast (or article) dedicated to the “possibility” of switching to a 4-3 is in order.

I don’t believe we are as far away personel-wise as some people think. If we drafted Clowney in round 1, our DL could be:

Woodley – McClendon – Heyward – Clowney. (That’s a very solid front IMO)

I believe both Timmons and Jones would be more effective playing out in space as 4-3 OLB’s. And if (granted this is a huge if) Spence came back close to his old form, he would be ideally suited as a 4-3 MLB who could run and cover the middle zone. Our LB’s could be:

Timmons – Spence – Jones. (That’s a very solid middle core IMO)

As far as the secondary goes, yes, that might be an issue initially. But our secondary is in a state of flux/rebuild anyways. Shamarko would make a great Bob Sanders-type 4-3 safety IMO. Cortez Allen is flexible enough to play CB in a 4-3. If we draft a ball hawk CB in the 2nd or 3rd round, we have our CB’s covered. That just leaves another S to fill via free agency. Our DB’s could be:

Allen – Thomas – Vet FA – 3rd round CB (That is not far off IMO)

It is at least worth a discussion…

  • Shannon Stephenson

Yes Ben makes a lot of good plays but because he holds onto the ball so long he puts him self in a lot of those so where are we at with this?

  • Callentown

I love the way you ripped the draft classes Dave. Nice job and thank you!!!!!!!
