2013 NFL Week 6 Stats – Adjusted Net Yards Per Passing Attempt Differential

A few weeks ago, I promised I would start posting the league ANY/A differential stats after the Pittsburgh Steelers fifth game and below are the results following the conclusion of week six.

I like to use these stats as my own personal power rankings as I believe it to be a good measurement for each and every team. The stat has a solid history and while it does not take into account rushing stats, it really doesn’t suffer that much without them.

Am I telling you that the Steelers are a better team right now than the Green Bay Packers? No, but I do think they are better than most of the teams currently ranked behind them.

You don’t need these stats to tell you that the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs are both undefeated right now, but these stats will tell you that the Chiefs are really relying on the defense through the first six weeks of the season while the Broncos are leaning heavily on their offense. The Chiefs, for example, lead the league in takeaways with 18 and also lead in turnover differential with a net of 12.

The Steelers, according to the ANY/A differential stats, are pretty much an average team right now and have only improved slightly since we last checked in on them after week three. They at least have a positive differential number right now, but with a 1-4 record, that’s a meaningless stat. The Steelers biggest problem has been turnovers and big plays up until this point and they corrected those problems this past Sunday. Did they correct them for good, or was that just a fluke?

This coming Sunday, the Steelers will host a Baltimore Ravens team and as usual, it should make for an interesting, low scoring game. The Steelers 2013 season is currently on life support right now thanks to the quality of the other three teams in their division, but a loss Sunday to Ravens, combined with a win by the Cincinnati Bengals, will pretty much pull the plug for good.

We all know that stats can lie and that they can be twisted around to meet narratives. Come Sunday evening, however, the Steelers ANY/A differential stats should tell us who won the game and we will see if they are an above average or below average team at that point.
