At Least The Steelers Have Held Down Their Penalties In 0-4 Start

The 2013 Pittsburgh Steelers seem to find a different way to lose every week through their first four games of the season, but excessive penalties has yet to be a factor.

As they head into their week five game against the New York Jets, the Steelers have been flagged all of 18 times for 185 yards. One of those penalties, a defensive offsides call against cornerback William Gay, was declined in the loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley leads the team in penalties with three and two of those were for unnecessary roughness.

As far as penalties on the offensive line go, there have been just three with the biggest one being the tripping call on tackle Marcus Gilbert against the Bengals that negated a 33 yard reception by Antonio Brown in the third quarter.

The Steelers special teams have contributed five penalties, however, and that is a concern.

The last time the Steelers had this few of penalties after four games was in 2006 when they were flagged only 10 times.
