New Steelers T Levi Brown Not Sure If Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley Is In His Corner

In 2007, the Arizona Cardinals drafted tackle Levi Brown with the fifth overall selection in the draft.  That same year, Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley was in his first season with the Cardinals as their offensive coordinator, but judging by Brown's quotes on Monday, the two may have a had a run-in or two with each other during their two seasons together.

"Well, you know, Todd is an interesting fella. Let's just leave it at that," Brown said, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Me and Todd -- I mean, everybody has their arguments. I'm not sure he's like necessarily in my corner, but, at this point, I'm here, so, obviously, he liked that fight in me, so I appreciate it."

Run-ins or not, Brown was the Cardinals starting right tackle during his time spent with Haley, so he should somewhat have an understanding of the offense. The terminology, however, might give him some problems, so he will have to work through that over the course of the several days.

"I obviously have a lot to learn as far as the playbook is concerned, terminology and things like that," Brown said Monday. "Once I've learned those things and they feel like I'm up to speed, I'm sure they'll make a decision one way or the other. Either way, I'm here to help out."

Whether or not Brown helps out Sunday at left tackle against the New York Jets could depend on whether or not left guard Ramon Foster is able to play as he continues to recover from a pectoral sprain. Brown admitted that he split reps Monday in practice at left tackle with Kelvin Beachum, but doesn't know yet if he'll get the start.

Head coach Mike Tomlin is scheduled to hold his weekly press conference on Tuesday, but isn't likely to tip his hand as to which way his leaning as it relates to the starting left tackle spot. Haley normally talks to the media on Thursday and it will be interesting to hear his thoughts on Brown as it relates to his past dealings with Brown.

Like it or not, the two are back in the same corner together again.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Man is the national media gonna run with this. Since they can’t make their Ben vs Haley feud work Levi vs Haley will have to do.

  • Tom Savastano

He probably should have kept that comment to himself…

  • Jason White

It’s like Ryan Clark and his comments about making the playoffs. Nothing wrong with being confident but I say shut up and show me. Get to .500 then he can talk about playoffs. “PLAYOFFS?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! PLAYOFFS?! DON’T TALK TO ME ABOUT PLAYOFFS! PLAYOFFS?!”

  • Shannon Stephenson

You just get on the team and make this comment…although it is not as bad when you read the whole statement but what a way to start with a team.

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

Some sources confirmed this- we didn’t parted a draft pick for Levi Brown. While its good to see us making some noises to improve the situation, Cardinals is essentially paying him to BE on the Steelers squad, to play against them… Cardinals doesn’t even want anything?! Its hard to feel good about this trade.

However I hope our FO see Levi Brown’s potentials at LG.

  • Luke Shabro

Shannon, that’s exactly what I was thinking. I mean regardless of what they did or did not give up to get him on the team, the FO clearly wanted to get him here and this is how he responds? I would’ve preferred to see the Fernando Velasco approach. That guy came off the street and was snapping the ball in jeans, ready to work. I wasn’t expecting Brown to come in and play like Joe Thomas but we’ll see how this goes….

  • joed32

True, but at the price it’s hard to feel bad about it either. Nothing to lose.

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

I guess. I foresee a dark age coming for us Steelers fans. I just thought it would be much later, not this soon.

  • Jeff

“Todd Haley has major beef with …. **sees random man on street** …. THAT GUY!”

TM did a lot of talking about changing things – if brown doesn’t start then he changed nothing – just more MT BS with no action

  • http://pittsburghsportsinat.blogspot.com/ bgsteelfan

Well, it would be a stretch for him to start after just a few days of practice.

It also appears Heyward will start for Hood. I would like to see a change at Nose though.

  • Dr. Doom

Why is anyone interviewing Levi Brown? Levi why have you stunk up the field your entire career.

  • Dr. Doom

Coach what did you think about the game? The offense didn’t do diddly poo, the defense sucked, the special teams sucked, the coaching sucked.

  • Richard Edlin

I’d prefer it if Ryan Clark concentrated on tackling.

  • charles

It must mean that Haley is not enamored with Adams and Brown in his opinion is better. The Brown selection is more Haley (and probably Bicknell) than Velasco. We need Brown to be an upgrade too.

  • Travis Spees

Levi has already added the Tomlin “obviously” to his vocabulary I see
