Levi Brown Will Only Cost The Steelers $840K In 2013

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Arizona Cardinals agreed to pay all but $840,000 of the $3.632 million salary that tackle Levi Brown was scheduled to earn prior to trading him Wednesday to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This is great news for the Steelers as it now appears their investment in Brown is virtually nothing. They still stand to lose a draft pick that is based on conditions, but apparently won’t have to eat any dead money should he wind up washing out as there is no need to restructure his contract right now.

Brown is still under contract with the Steelers through the 2016 season and scheduled to earn a $6 million base salary in 2014 if he is still on the team. If he plays well and the Steelers decide to retain him, they will have the option of restructuring his contract next offseason.

In short, the Steelers really have risked nothing for Brown and he has nothing but upside at this point.

Wow! Cards really wanted him gone……..

  • Lamarr56

Sweet, does that mean we don’t need to clear up any cap space?

  • NW86

Wow, that’s a no brainer then! It does make you wonder why the Cards wanted him gone so bad though…

  • JohnB

i think their fans paid that money to get rid of him.

  • Mike Carroll

I feel much better about the deal now. Good job by Colbert on this one because they needed to try something.

  • gene mann

Good news for the Steelers on the Money but it does seem the Cards really wanted him out and the talk from Arziona does not sound good

  • HopalongCassidy

Our wiz-bang coach Tomlin will probably not dress Brown for a few weeks so he can keep David Paulson dressed on the sideline. Anyone want to bet on this ?

  • T R

So damn Baltimore got Monroe supposedly a way better OL then brown way cheaper then Pittsburgh. Damn does Ozzie and ravens win again. Time will tell huh

  • gene mann

I was curious how Healthy is Brown from his past injury

  • Steve

This sounds like a good pickup being that the price for Levi is 840,000k. Adams sits and ponders about what has been going on with him at left tackle and knows his play is unacceptable and he has lost his job. Adams will have to work hard to get on the field and knows better performance is needed, if not he will be gone.

  • Jefferson_St_Joe

This makes the deal somewhat palatable. I didn’t know that sort of contract maneuvering was permitted in the NFL.

  • CrazyTerry

OK, this deal looks a lot better now that only the Steelers pay the minimum. I hated this deal with a passion and I would like to make peace with the few Steelersdepot readers i debated with heatedly today about this trade. Let’s hope for a miracle and maybe Levi Brown will make the best of it

  • PA2AK

They gave up a 4th and 5th round pick next year I thought…

  • Brandon Andrews

    wow just dumb

  • Brandon Andrews

not really nothing but downside, he doesn’t play well, they lose two picks, he does then they have to pay him.

  • treeher

Triceps injury end of August 2012. First game back this year (9/8/13) he gave up three sacks. So a year to get back on the field. I am holding out hope that his arm will recover sufficiently to regain past performance.

  • drew

Sometimes a player needs a change to get it going….hopefully this is it.

  • Steeler Wheeler

He clearly was not using his arms in the gifs provided in game 1. Vet minimum to see if he heals enough to play solid, starting LT.

  • Jeff

also a higher cap hit… We really won’t know who won out on this until the end of the season….. If we get a Brown who plays any better than mediocre, it was a steal IMO

  • HopalongCassidy

Likely because he was playing at the same caliber as Mike Adams which is to say…terrible !

  • HopalongCassidy

    Tomlin is that dumb.
