Mike Tomlin Bans All Steelers Players From Doing Flips And Somersaults

Following his first career touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings a few weeks ago, rookie running back Le’Veon Bell was told by head coach Mike Tomlin not to do anymore forward flips into the end zone because they didn’t want him to risk getting injured. On Tuesday, Tomlin said during his press conference that he has now told the entire team that somersaults into the end zone are now forbidden after wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders performed his following the long touchdown Sunday in the win over the New York Jets.

“Because its a potential for injury,” said Tomlin when asked for his reasons behind banning the acrobatic celebrations. “It’s silly.”

Silly it was indeed and you can see in the animated gif of Sanders’ flip below just how violently he landed on his back after completing the somersault.

During his weekly interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio following his press conference, Tomlin was again asked to talk about the ban on forward flips after scores.

“It’s not something that you have to anticipate talking about,” said Tomlin. “I think you go into it with the understanding that we need to do everything in our power to maintain our health as much as we can.”

Tomlin later promised that we have seen our last flip this season.

“You wont see anybody in the back and gold doing that moving forward,” he said.

Alrighty then, anyone flipping into the flipping endzone will result in Tomlin flipping out.

  • Dr. Doom

I for one enjoy celebrating its funny, but somersaulting is just dumb you come down wrong and broken rib. And a ref could throw a flag. But Hines Ward used to do the same stuff when Cowher was here.

Tomlin gets accused of being too much like a buddy with his players. I have no idea since I’m not in the locker room, but good to see him put his foot down with this 1-4 team.

  • Fire.Mike.Tomlin

It’s a few seasons too late, but I agree. No more nice guy. Walkthewalk on all the BS spewed in press conferences. The standard sucks.

  • Shea Fahr

I would have given Manny a 9.2 grade on this but he failed to keep his feet together on the tuck and roll…so an 8.4 is all he gets from me.

  • srdan

I credit Tomlin. He is changing with the team. I think he stepped in with Cowhers “boys” in there and he knew the only way to lead that team was by being a players coach.

Now we have a younger team that he molded. I really credit him with acknowledging the teams shortcomings and approaching them differently, be it outside of his comfort zone. I think this is a sign of a good coach. He has taken a stern stance with some of the changes. I think it fits this team better.

Still he is far from Coughlin, ahha.

  • dgh57

When I saw this play I thought that had to hurt because he’s(I think anyways) landing on padded concrete. Good move by Tomlin!

  • Brendon Glad

It’s pretty amazing that a coach seems like he has to tell his players EVERYTHING…instead of them knowing it naturally.
So hey, before it happens, I hope he adds a ban against players running full speed and head-butting the wall after a touchdown too…just in case they’ve never heard of Gus Frerotte…or dropping the ball in celebration before they reach the goal-line, in case they haven’t heard of DeShawn Jackson or Danny Trevaithon.
Better cover everything before they make themselves a permanent joke to laugh at for years and years.

  • HopalongCassidy

How about banning all of the hotdog moves and show some class. Antonio Brown always holding the ball out and dropping it after every catch comes to mind. I have been surprised that some ref. has not blown a whistle for that since he usually does it right in front of the ref. instead of handing the ball over. All of this petty in-your-face celebration stuff after almost every single play in the NFL be it a catch, a sack or a tackle just looks childish and stupid. High school players show more class than NFL players and I think it detracts from the game. I would love to see the league just ban it all.

  • Luke Shabro

It doesn’t bother me when guys do TD celebrations. It’s not easy getting touchdowns in this league so I get it. But I agree that the celebration after every tackle and ever reception is ridiculous. It’s your job. Great, you did your job. Now go do it again. It used to drive me nuts when Roy Williams would do his first down celebration and it drives me nuts now that Antonio Brown does it. Ziggy Hood has a bad habit of that too. I could be wrong but I don’t remember James Harrison doing that. He was just a mean, angry dude that beat on people.

  • srdan

Not everyone is the same. Different levels of adrenaline make people react differently. I don’t think AB is trying to show off, it’s just his thing.
If athletes celebrating bother viewers, maybe they should watch ballet, they only bow once.

  • cencalsteeler

The Steelers should call this the Leftwich rule!

  • RedCarpetDefense

I do a little celebration dance when:
-I show up to work…..on time
    -Its time for a break
    -before/after every meal
    -when i poo
-on a date when she goes to the ladies room
    -before I get lucky
    -definitely after I got lucky
-at the store, bank, theater, Disneyland…pretty much whenever I feel the urge
-when the Steelers score a TD
    -when Antonio Brown does his
-going through an airport TSA security checkpoint

  • HopalongCassidy

That adrenaline thing you mention seems to be a genetic trait from what I see. I don’t watch ballet so I’ll defer to you on that.

  • Eric

The ghost of Byron Leftwich lingers on in the Burgh

  • Dr. Doom

Thank you sir, people would hate me if I was in the NFL I would be like Peter Griffin doing sing alongs.

  • Tom Savastano

There should not be too much temptation to do flips based on the way they have played in the red zone this season..

  • Dr. Doom

eye roll they won get over yourself

  • Dr. Doom

wouldn’t it be funny if he did it to say look how stupid you look

  • PA2AK

I bet no one was doing it when they were 1-4 😉

  • Shannon Stephenson

Good. It was stupid. Sanders needs to be protected from his self.

  • PA2AK

really? THAT gets a downvote? Who actually thinks acting like a clown and doing something stupid like this is a good idea when you’re on your way to a 12-4 record…let alone when you are still hoping to secure your first victory in your 5th game of the season? Tomlin unfortunately has to act like a parent. WWHMD…what would heath miller do…

  • PA2AK

He is fine with finishing off a TD with a flip….just don’t ask him to finish off a block or a route when he isn’t targeted.

  • Bob Loblaw

I wanna say this isn’t the first time he’s said something about flips? Or was that just about a celebration or something.

  • Matt Searls

i mainly agree with this but i really think the players have to a little annoyed at all the rules and what they arent allowed to do now. Woodley said that the steelers locker room was basically an old person home, and that was before the games were taken away. now they cant even celebrate how they want? i know its for safety but if i was on that team id be a little annoyed

  • PA2AK

and besides…ever remember Hines cutting off a route early when he wasn’t thrown to or take a play off on the backside of a run or not finish a block? One guy earned it…the other clearly hasn’t….even if i’m of the opinion that it is stupid.

  • PA2AK

I’m sure the coach is also annoyed with a 1-4 record, a plethora of turnovers, missed tackles, unfinished blocks, wr’s (namely Sanders) pouting and taking plays off on the backside, cutting off a route when not targeted.

  • PA2AK

he’s done something like that every game. just on sunday…watched him shake his head as he broke the huddle slightly early. then proceeded to jog on a ‘route’ because it was headed to the other side of the field. can take a pool table and shove it…

  • patrick Mayfield

if he could keep the knees tucked in longer he’d have more rotation as well.

  • RedCarpetDefense

I’ve always felt the Steelers should’ve let him walk to the Pats for a pick. I know he’s a veteran WR on this team but his production/contribution thus far (I know he’s been injured) just didn’t justify imo keeping him for what we could possibly be drafting next year.

  • HiVul

Yea Leveon Bell did a little flip into the corner of the end zone against the vikings and Tomlin said he spoke to him about it. I was surprised when I saw Sanders do his flip mainly for that reason. Sanders was much higher in the air too.

I mean do literally any other celebration- jump into the stands, slam dunk the goal post, do a silly dance. But he chooses the one thing Tomlin spoke out about last week which is just weird to me. I don’t want to judge him too harshly for something that really isn’t THAT big of a deal. But between that and the pouting before plays are even over you have to wonder about the guy and his maturity level

  • 2winz

Really? Antonio Brown holding the ball out and dropping it bothers you? I think you need to loosen up, you sound like a stiff person HopalongCassidy. I don’t think he does it every catch, just every catch that gets a 1st down. It’s like his way of saying “we moved the chain, lets goo!!” whenever I see that, I get excited, and it could fire up the crowd and the team. other receivers on other teams do worse, so I don’t see why it would call for a flag. its no different than Jared Allen’s sack dance. when Allen gets a sack, you know hes gonna do his kneel down and lasso or w/e he does.. AB at least has the right to celebrate for moving the chains, he is quickly becoming one of the better receivers in the league.

  • Jack Hambert

yea it appears they are all 9 year olds. my 9 year old whacked bocce balls with a coke bottle, which then shattered. Seems like he could have figured that out on his own…

  • Dwayne Ferguson

    Good for Tomlin.

  • Bob Loblaw

Nah, I was talking in years before this, not the Bell thing.

  • Intropy

Can we add smacking a teammate in the helmet? How many times have you seen a guy make a big hit then get the celebratory h2h bump? They don’t need concussions from celebrating. I remember at least one time Troy got concussed on a play and then got the helmet bump walking woozily to the sideline. I’m sure that didn’t help.

  • Douglas Andrews

I remember Adrian “All Day” Peterson did that while at Oklahoma and broke his collarbone. Always makes me cringe when I see guys doing that!

  • Matt Searls

No doubt. Sometimes a boost of team morale is a good way to go. I really don’t think that u believed I was saying that any of those things were good?

  • overscored

I bet soon Mike Tomlin wants to ban dancing…just like the town in Footloose.

Kidding. Good riddance to showboating like that, especially at 1-4.

  • Johnny Loose

I thought it was cool when I seen it live. Probably a good idea not to do a flip and hurt yourself though. I like seeing Tomlin take charge and “uphold the standard, if you will”.

  • rizzo29

Really Hines Ward did a flip when they were 0-4,didn,t think so smartin up

  • srdan

Genetic trait? I am not sure where you are going with that. But I imagine it is, just like most of our physical chemistry.
You haven’t seen Black Swan? haha

  • srdan

All I am saying is that we are missing swagger. Especially on defense. And if AB didn’t have it, we would be missing it on offense as well. Be careful what we wish for.

  • srdan

hahaa, you sound like a happy fella.

  • Steeler Wheeler

Can we ban mike Tomlin from mis-managing the clock, mis-handling the roster, and worrying too much about stupid shit?

  • HopalongCassidy

Last year the refs. flagged Keisel for doing a kneel down after a sack. Holding the ball out in front of the ref. who is waiting for it then dropping it might be considered a delay of game and it just looks like you’re showing up the refs. It’s like the Charley Brown thing when the ball gets pulled back. That is my point. I suspect it will get flagged sometime and end up being an uncalled for penalty that hurts the team.
