Ryan Clark Says Steelers Will Make The Playoffs And Thinks Browns QB Brandon Weeden Stinks

Friday, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark was on ESPN First Take and tried to explain to Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless why the team is off to an 0-4 start. In addition, Clark also gave his reasons as to why he thinks the Steelers will still make the playoffs.

“I think we will,” said Clark. “We will make the playoffs and the reason I believe we’ll make the playoffs, we’re in a division where right now the Cleveland Browns are leading at 3-2 and they’re extremely good team, but they do have cracks. Brandon Weeden is now the quarterback. I think it’s a team that we can definitely compete with and beat.

“And we get to play everybody we need to beat still this season. We have five games against division opponents, we go to the New York Jets, we also go to Oakland, so these are all AFC games and if you win those games, nine wins or ten wins can win the AFC North and put you in the playoffs.”

Clark didn’t stop there with his disrespecting of the Browns and Weeden.

“Last night [Thursday night against the Buffalo Bills], Brandon Weeden was ready to go and they didn’t want to put him in. They still wanted to start Brian Hoyer and if it’s not for Travis Benjamin being electrifying in the first half, I still think they lose that game.

“So for me, I feel like he’s easier to defend, I think we’ll do a good job against him in being able to confuse him, make him hold the ball too long and get some pressure. So, Cleveland is definitely an easier team to beat with Brandon Weeden at quarterback.”

Clark, who appears to have all the answers right now, also had a few tips for the Steelers offense and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in addition.

“Sometimes you have to protect Ben against Ben,” said Clark. “He’s a guy that’s great at improv, extending plays, making plays with his legs, letting receivers scramble, do the scramble drill, and hit them deep or hit them across the middle, allowing them catch and runs.

“So right now, we have to kind of tone Ben down in a sense and say, hey, right now we’re not a good enough team for you to try to extend plays, for us to take sacks, or for us to have turnovers.”

Well, I am sure Roethlisberger hopes Clark and the rest of the defense can start stopping the run and start tackling better. If they do, then perhaps he won’t have to try to be Superman at the end of every game. Let’s face it, the offense has it together more than the defense does right now.

Clark certainly likes being front and center with the media as that is where he his paycheck will come from as soon as his playing days are over. That could be as early as next year the way he is playing right now.

The Steelers are 0-4 right now and the last thing Clark needs to do is to run around guaranteeing that the team will make the playoffs while disrespecting other teams and their players in the process. Not only that, I really don’t think he needs to concern himself with the Steelers offense, because the Steelers defense has its own share of cracks that needs repairing of which Clark is one of them.

  • 20Stoney

Agreed. I don’t see how this helps the team. Only Ryan.

  • Richard Edlin

This year, Clark’s tackling stinks more than Weedon’s throwing; he sounds deluded shooting his mouth off at the moment.

  • Xclewsive

2013 Ryan Clark=2006 Bill Cowher. He’s there but he’s not there!

  • Jason

Why doesn’t Tomlin put a muzzle on this guy. If he wants to work for ESPN he should go do it and let Shamarko start his career. Clark needs to shut his big mouth and raise his level of play because he is hurting this team. Besides he plays in a secondary that’s been shredded by Jake Locker and Matt Cassel so Weeden beating us isn’t that far fetched.

  • Virdin Barzey

If you are playing well, I can understand making these comments trying to get the team to get behind you. I personally wouldn’t do it but Hello, Clark

  • GunsDontKillWoodleyKills

Clark should just quick talking sh!t and just make the HIT!

  • joed32

What if he went on that show and stated that the season was over and the team has no chance of making the playoffs? Would everyone praise him for his honesty or would everyone call him a quitter. It’s probably his last season and he’s has slowed down noticeably, it happens to everyone at some point. If he feels they can still make the playoffs he’s free to say so. I hope he’s not the only Steeler who still has hope and confidence.

  • unclesteelerbob

OBVIOUSLY, Clark is delusional! Less talk & more better play is required.

  • dkoy85

Its not the confidence in saying the team makes the playoffs thats irking us- its nice to hear hes not giving up- its everything else hes been saying about weeden and our 100$ mil man.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Are you a football player or a talk show host? If you are a football player get in the game room and study more film, work out more in the gym, practice your craft with other players when regular practice is over and improve your game. You sound like a damn 15 year old kid talking about how crappy the other teams are. We are 0-4. Shut up and get better, your game will talk for you.

  • TJimmy

Clark was never real good at keeping his tongue in check

  • chris ward

Clark has no room to critic, being that the Steelers are 0-4 and his play hasn’t been great this year.

  • Mike Carroll

Right to the point. This only helps Clark as he attempts to be the “candid” talk show commentator. Too bad he fails even in that regard.

  • bonairsfavoriteson

I have to laugh when people, no matter who they are keep bleating , that Ben should , quit trying to make a play, quit holding the ball and taking sacks, quit throwing nothing but the 2 second 5 yard patters to neutralize a pass rush, IF he all he did was get rid of the ball when the receivers were not open, the pass rush was heavy, the ground game was non exsistant, the times when we had long yardage to make a first down, he would be limited to about 17 % opportunities to actually try to complete a pass.

  • Callentown

Yeah Dave, your final words sum this whole thing up to me. Although, I do disagree with you on one thing. The Offense is most certainly not ahead of anyone or anything, including the defense.

  • HiVul

I don’t really care if a player makes comments to ESPN on a bye day, I just don’t like what he said. I wouldn’t be surprised if Clark has more missed tackles than Mike Adams has missed blocks so I don’t think he should be saying a word about the offense

  • HiVul

False dichotomy. Going on ESPN is no different than doing an advertisement. The team doesn’t OWN any player, and as soon as this team is done with Clark they’re going to stop paying him. There are no pensions in football. Yes, Clark needs to work hard and not make stupid comments, but to say the ONLY thing he’s allowed to do is get better at football is ridiculous.

What is your job? Does commenting on this article make you better at it? If not then by your logic you should stop making comments on this website.

  • cencalsteeler

Nobody should be talking when they are 0-4. Allowing bulletin board for other teams is just plain dumb!

  • Tom

Sitting at 0-4, I don’t think Clark or any other Steeler needs to concern themselves with what is going on in Cleveland.

  • kakello34

I don’t think Weeden is scared of the Steelers defense right now. He could make throws blindfolded and not throw an interception against this defense.

  • Christopher Wilkes

This is exactly why this guy sux this year. Everyone here had a problem with the Steelers being on Hard Knocks, but no one seemed to care while Clark was running his mouth off all offseason on talk shows.

  • Kelly A

Perhaps I am the only one that sees the method to Ryan’s madness; I love this clip. Despite their current predicament, if there is any team that turn it around it’s the Steelers. At this point, the last thing the Steelers need are players that don’t have the internal belief that they can still be elite despite their current standing. What Ryan is doing in this clip is speaking to himself and sending a challenge to everyone else on his team to prove him right; that this team can turn it around. The last thing Ryan needs to do is embody the attitude of many of the Steelers fans and fold; there is not problem in aiming high, even if it means sounding a little delusional. Personally speaking this team has the right tools to make this season happen, it’s about believing in themselves even if the rest of us are thinking about 2014 and getting people fired.

There is a definite life lesson to be learned by this team, in life you may feel that you are in an imprefect predicament, the question is; HOW WILL YOU RESPOND? There are really only two ways; give up, prove everyone else right that you can be no better than what you are. The other option is to keep working, keep believing and try to elevate; while you are human and still breathing, you have to the potential to achieve ANYTHING!

So God bless you Ryan Clark, if you say it can be done, then it can be done. I believe the Steelers will be a different team after this break, and perhaps some of the pessimism that he embodied this fanbase, turn into optimism.

  • Jay Jaber

He needs to shut up and stop talking about his starting qb and start talking about himself missing so many tackles

  • CrazyTerry

The defense has been awful this year. What protected the D from being as bad as it showed last week for the earlier games was our offense was so bad, the other offense did not have to push the pedal down. Once our offense got better last week, you saw how bad the defense was. I noticed how terrrible our D was in the chicago game itself. They let in 17 points on the first 3 drives and only one of htos edrives was a short field thanks to Ben’s turnvoer. Their failure to get a turnover is awful because the same team they faced seem to turn th eball over easily in subsequent weeks.
At least with the offense, the problem may be a tad easier to fix. Fix the LT position and hope one of the WRs can develop enough to be a good #2 WR. The D is short on talent thanks to the coaches not giving the young players a chance in the last few years. What is their fascination with Hood? Why not let Heyward get more snaps as he is the only DL guy capable of a big play.

  • CrazyTerry

The guy has become an Anthony Smith in his old age.

  • sean mcmartin

Sounds like Clark is one of the few optimists left. It’s obvious the Steelers have very weak lines on both sides of the ball this season. don’t see them picking up anyone worth having.
so I take it Clark is bummed his swann song is going out with a whimper.

  • charles

And it could be Clark trying to light a fire with his own teammates. Still it would be great to see his FIRST big hit of the season.

  • charles

Thats right. We should all be pulling for Ryan to be right!

  • Shannon Stephenson

    You make some valid points.
#1 With how much NFL players make they do not need pensions unless they are idiots
#2 I had more of a problem not with the interview but more with him bashing other teams that are doing better than us.
#3 He doesn’t have to get better at football or worry about practice or any of that, he will just be looking for a new job if he can’t learn how to tackle someone better.

I do not like guys who want to tear someone else down when we are not doing better than they are. That was my point! I am not on this website bashing other companies on how bad they do their jobs because I am a adult and try to conduct myself like one.

  • CrazyTerry

It’s the lack of class. He loooks like an idiot bashing Weeden when a rusty Cassell made them look stupid.

  • Curtis

    Well said R. Clark

  • Curtis

So did R. Clark fumble all those balls? Did R. Clark throw all those interception? If I do recall all those but 1 turnovers turned into points. The 1 fumble that wasn’t scored on was the game ending turnover of the game against the Vikings. Couple tackles that didn’t amount to much turnovers that lost games, I THINK HE NEEDS TO TALK AND EVERYONE IN THAT LOCKER ROOM ALSO NEEDS TO TALK ABOUT THE QB CAUSEING US GAMES FROM HIS TURNOVERS, BECAUSE HES TRYING TO DO TO MUCH. OR MAYBE YOUR NOT WATCHING THE SAME GAMES AS ALL OF US.

  • Curtis

Done the same thing Joey Porter done and it seem to always work. Guys will start stepping up and Ben will quite turning over the ball.

  • Curtis

If there not turnovers we would be winning. Look at stats.

  • Curtis

Everyone on here that is bashing R. Clark needs to check themselves. Every year before the season starts when the schedule just comes out I look at it and pencil in wins. Every year I say that were going to win the superbowl just like you. I’m doing the same thing Clark is doing and so are all of you. Thing is if we were 4-0 all of you would be all on his bandwagon cheering what he said. Because were 0-4 he needs to shut up and learn how to tackle. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rizzo29

more like Tomlin since he,s been here

  • alex

did i miss the word ‘stinks’?

anyway, it was a solid interview…he talked reality with Weeden, both positive and negative…he talked reality with the Steelers, both positive and negative…except for taking his own medicine in critiquing his own failings this year…

i love all his interviews because he is pretty much on the money, honest and articulate…

now shut-up and let your play do the talking!

  • RW

This is America. He’s allowed to make as many stupid comments he wants. That said, his comments were stupid, and they did nothing to help the team move forward. You don’t need to say something controversial to light a fire under a team… or to work on ESPN.

  • Edward Rundt

This helps me bring up these bullets.
    1. Is Ryan Clark trying to get a job on First Take. Yeah he would fit in right in with those other jokers (a whiner, a studio lawyer, and those other morons).
    2. If you want to do a fund-raiser, have a baloon blowing contest between Ryan Clark, Mike Tomlin, and Lamar Woodley since they’re so full of hot air.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

A lot of crazy things can happen during the course of a season. I remember 2005 very well. We started out the season 3-2. And after 12 games we were 7-5. We had a young QB and a number of flaws. There was little chance we were going to win 4 straight games. And even if we did somehow squeak into the playoffs, there was no way were going to beat Peyton Manning’s high powered offense on the road…

  • Justin Barlow

Unbelievable. He is officially a distraction. This is unacceptable. He isnt playing well enough to talk like that. This is surprising given his history as a team leader and thoughtful rep for the team. Disappointing.

  • Pete

You are 0-4 and talking smack. Wow! That’s pretty ballsy if you ask me.

  • DoctorNoah

I agree with him. I still think we make the playoffs too.

  • Brandon Andrews

he is always talking one ear out the other.

  • Paul Jones

Dont get this hanging onto ball too much thing. He isn’t getting much time to stand up with Adams on the line. Kids got a touch of the Walt Jrs. Sweet 2nd round pick

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Gee thanks for the proclamation Ryan I cant wait until Shamarko or Golden replaces you in the Starting lineup. Because its clear that you are more focused on your Broadcasting career then you are trying to make a tackle.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Did Ben miss those Tackles that led to TDS? the Whole team is responsible for this mess not Just Ben Curtis.

  • Curtis

Your right but if Ben takes care of the ball then we wouldn’t be talking about missed tackles, we would be talking about how good we are. The best in AFC north and possible the AFC. We would have with a 4-0 record Kirby. Look at the Titans first turnover all season 3-1, The Browns don’t turnover the ball 3-2. Turnovers looses games, and taking care of the ball = no turnovers as were finding out.

  • Curtis

    R. Clark has always spoke to the media and if you don’t know he has his own weekly show in the burgh so does Ben and many of the Players you can follow them on Steelers Nation Radio on iheart radio. Being a player of any sports, interviews with the media comes with the territory.

  • Curtis

3 step drop, quick outs, check downs, not checking out of plays, ect. How about looking at still photos of formations of opposing teams to find a soft spot on the field. Things that the best QB’s are doing Manning, Brees, Rodgers, ect. Help the offensive line, but more important help himself and the team. Just for starters.

  • Jim McCarley

The man was asked a question and he answered it…..Athletes shouldn’t be afraid to say what they thing. He said that Weeden had talent, but would be easier to beat than Hoyer…NOT easy to beat….If either team needs bulletin board material, then they need a new occupation.

  • joed32

They’re already on fire. These guys trash talk the whole game but we don’t here it. The Browns are going to try their best to best the Steelers no matter what has been said or hasn’t been said.

  • rizzo29

Clark has always been an odd guy, when they were winning nobody seemed to mind what he said.It obvious he see,s his career ending soon and moving on into commentating.

  • Tom Savastano

and I used to like Clark…

  • PA2AK

He has surprisingly emerged as one of the ‘Me’s’ on the team and quickly losing a lot of the respect I have found for him over the years of solid work.

  • Moneypenny76

If our defense could tackle we would be winning. It is humiliating being the only defense in the league with no turnovers. If I were a member of that defense, I would not be going on ESPN…I would be too embarrassed.

Ben has the turnovers because he is trying to make something happen and the receivers are generally getting no separation at all. If he just threw the ball away every time the receivers weren’t wide open, every series would be a three and out. We won’t win any games doing that. We can’t run, the receivers can’t get open, and when they occasionally do the line can’t block long enough for them to run their route and let Ben get the throw off.

  • Moneypenny76

    Sad, but true.

  • Curtis

Got an idea quit he needs to quit trying to do to much and let the team help him out instead of helping the other team out.

  • Moneypenny76

The team isn’t helping him out…that is the problem.

  • Moneypenny76

Even if Ben had zero turnovers nobody would be talking about how good we are. The defense has ZERO turnovers…that is the absolute WORST in the entire NFL. Only 4 sacks…pathetic. We are the 25th ranked rushing defense…because we can’t tackle. We have no pass rush, no turnovers and can’t tackle. Are you even watching the games???

Even if Ben played PERFECTLY (which nobody does), people would be talking about how bad the defense is.

  • Donnie Richardson

First off clark is absolutely correct. We will make the playoffs, big ben has 6 of our 11 turnovers. So when is it bad to speak the truth? The browns are leading the afc north you fans always complaining about this and that. the coaches ,the front office, the play calling..shut the hell up!! If you could do better you would be doing something in the nfl.. the veterans we got rid of are busts on their new teams except keenan lewis. Big ben is averaging almost 400 yrds passing a game with no o line. We will turn it around starting with the jets

  • Johnny Loose

Just a tad bit harsh on RC Dave. I think he spoke his true feelings and that he wasn’t far off if at all. This coming from a guy RC blocked on twitter, lol.

  • Riverstko

The media is using the team to throw us off our game. Even have new commericials where the steelers are looking crazy missing tackles etc. And im tired of it.

  • Bill Molinaro

I would say that compared to Ryan Clark’s tackling, Weeden is an All Pro!

  • CrazyTerry

Thje offense stinks at turnvoers. True. But then you have to admit this defense is the WORST at generating turnvovers. You watch other defenses in the league generate MULTIPLE turnovers in a game off of the same offenses the steelers D is facing.

  • CrazyTerry

Cutler turned the ball over so many times in the two games after he faced us. Our D did not come close to getting one. Three ex steeler secondary players have gotten one INT each already. Part of it is the players , part of it is Lebeau’s time as an elite coordinator has come to an end.
Woodley and TImmons get paid big money. What have they done so far to earn such high salaries?

  • Dr. Doom

Someone needs to sit him down and go Look, were not a good enough team right now for you to miss tackles, lower your head and not see what you are trying to tackle, and blow coverages guessing wrong.
