Steelers No Longer On Hook For Conditional Draft Pick With Levi Brown Now Out For Season

As expected, the Pittsburgh Steelers will not have to give up the 2015 conditional draft pick that was included in the trade with the Arizona Cardinals for tackle Levi Brown during the bye week due to the fact that the conditions were not met.

Cardinals beat writer Kent Somers reported Tuesday afternoon on Twitter that Brown would have had to been on the Steelers active roster for five games in order for the 2015 draft pick to come into play. With Brown now on injured reserve with a torn triceps suffered Sunday in pre-game warm-ups against the New York Jets, there is no way he will meet those conditions.

Also according to Somers, per NFL rules, when a team trades a player who spent the previous year on injured reserve, as Brown did, the player must be on his new team’s active roster for five weeks in order for draft pick conditions to be met.

In turn, that means the Steelers will not be receiving the conditional draft pick that was to come their way from the Cardinals as part of the trade.

The Steelers will, however, still be on the hook salary cap wise for the remaining base salary that Brown is owed this season, but thanks to the Cardinals already paying most of it as part of the trade, that hit is minimal.

Brown is scheduled to earn a $6 million base salary in 2014, but I think it is safe to say that he will be released during the offseason.

No muss no fuss bye Levi.

  • Thomas Rancy

ok so we get a tackle for next year free of charge, can we get another one for conditional pick for this year then ahah

  • cencalsteeler

Watch for Rice out of the backfield on the dump pass, please!!!!!!

  • greeny

This is puzzling to me. I am speculating but I believe both parties involved had knowledge of this Triceps injury and rolled the dice. Throw the “physical” out the window. He did miss all of 2012 with the same injury. Beachum is not the answer. Suggs is going to have is way this weekend. I hope #7 survives.

  • Dr. Doom

wilkerson didn’t and on the same level.

  • Kevin Gobleck

So did we just get him for free?

  • Kevin Gobleck

Don’t worry Beachum will make Suggs “Feel our offensive line”

  • Douglas Andrews

Oh Well…we could have had Eugene Monroe! He looked terrible on Sunday

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

First logic thing about doing a business transaction- you pay somebody TO play against you. You got to be wanting to get rid of him that bad. This trade put both parties in losers columns. Yeah I’m glad the Steelers did something about it but.. didn’t they already acknowledged the issue with Aaron Smith? That injury will come back!

We could have got similar deal for somebody without an injury history. Heck, we could get a rent-a-tackle and worry about the bigger picture later.

  • gene mann

Good that we have not lost a Pick and would have to agree he won’t be picked up for next year at that price

Comedian’s post: if Colbert hadn’t lost the receipt could’ve been a clean refund. [ rim shot~!]

  • rizzo29

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass.

  • mikewormack

This move won’t help in GM of the year voting.

  • T R

I belive it our OL did as good as they did against the Jets they will be ok against the Ravens.. the DL for Jets is better then Ravens…

  • Bell Cow

So what now? Is Beachum suitable to play left tackle? Are they going to dig for somebody else?

  • Bell Cow

Yeah really. Colbert’s seat is beginning to get warm. One more bad draft class and another losing season may start to cause some serious doubts.

  • jeff from Ohio

I think Beachum deserves a shot at the LT spot. And occasionally give him some help. Let Adams and Gilbert fight it out for the RT position.

  • Riverstko

I hope so,Beachum looked ok. He did better than Adams but he still got to show more. He got a few calls and got beat several times. I like him better inside than at tackle.

  • Riverstko

    Thats all they know LOL!!!

  • r4kolb

I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved Gilbert over to LT for a try. May just stick w Beach.

  • SteelerFanInMD

We got him for practically nothing, but we ended up with absolutely nothing since he is on IR without playing a down.

  • patrick Mayfield

    another losing season?

like the second one in a 14 year tenure? and the first one under Tomlin?

  • cencalsteeler

That, and the deep heave to Torrey Smith and or Jacoby.

  • mikewormack

I think that he would have to have a lot more blunders to in danger of being fired. I think he has done a great job as GM, but there have been some glaring mistakes over the past two years. Not having a quality rb last year along with the Wallace debacle, he should have traded or signed him. This year the biggest blunder was thinking that our offense would move the ball without Heath Miller who was responsible for over 800 yards of receiving.
