Steelers Sign CB Devin Smith To Practice Squad; Release WR Devon Wylie

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a minor practice squad move on Wednesday as cornerback Devin Smith was signed and wide receiver Devon Wylie was released.

Wylie was added to the practice squad two weeks ago after rookie wide receiver Markus Wheaton suffered a broken pinky finger, so this is a good sign that the Steelers third-round draft pick will be back practicing this week after missing the last three games.

Smith was with the Steelers during training camp and has already spent some time this season on the practice squad.

This is kinda strange, not the release of Wylie but the signing of Devin Smith we already have 11 DBs on roster when you count Isaiah Green…

  • AndyR34

Yes, but…only three decent ones. Maybe they believe that quantity will make up for quality? Oh wait…you CAN have 11 DB’s on the field at the same time…maybe a new package for the Pats? LOL!

  • Where is Alan Baxter he is going to save the Steelers.

  • T R

    Can he play LT? LOL

  • TheBlitz

I’ve said it before, it’s time to forget about him. He isn’t coming back anytime soon. If he were, he would’ve been signed back many weeks ago

We keep having problems with the OL staying healthy and we bring in another DB?!!

  • I know I was poking fun

Excuse Baxter for looking pretty good in the pre-season,….considering our woeful play at OLB this year, I’d have thought he’d deserve a place before all these bit part DB’s.

I guarantee Wylie would have improved our return game. And why did we shy away from not putting Sanders back there after his nice return 2 weeks ago?

Steelers.Com lists 7 players on the practice squad. The RB from University of Cincy appears to be missing. Anyone know why? Our 7 man PS has 2 WR;s and no LB’s or TE’s. I am not going to ask for an explanation for that.

  • Shelob9

Good point. It was pretty obvious that last week the run blocking would have been better if we had more offensive lineman on the practice squad.

Did you not read the word “healthy” in my post? Obviously then I was talking about the health of the OL not the quality of play. There is no guarantee as of yet that the o-linemen hurt are going to play this Sunday. If not they may have to promote Hubbard/Long to the 53 man roster therefore vacancies on the PS.

you do not want to risk injuries to starters.

  • cencalsteeler

Isn’t AB our punt returner? Isn’t Felix Jones bounced back and forth as a co-starter? I’m sorry, but this “don’t want to risk injuries” thing drives me crazy!! With that theory, why don’t we start Bruce because we don’t want to risk injury to Ben? You put your best player on the field to help give you the best opportunity to win. These guys are big boys and get paid a lot of money to play football. If you don’t use them to help you win, then why have them on your roster? Sorry for the rant, but saving players for sake of injury is just not right!

  • Shannon Stephenson

I can agree that it doesnt make sense to have AB returning punts and not have Sanders doing the returns but I do not think we have anyone who can pint return. Jones is a back up so that point isn’t really valid. He is expendable.

I liked Devin Smith, at least what I’ve seen from his college film and the preseason. So not a bad signing… Except we need help on the OL… Maybe there just aren’t enough good ones out there at this time, I don’t know. It’s nice to know they haven’t forgotten about him though. Curtis Brown may be gone next year, so I guess they want to get a real good look at Smith while they can…
