Steelers Sign LB Kion Wilson To Practice Squad; Release LB Alan Baxter

The Pittsburgh Steelers made one practice squad move on Friday as linebacker Kion Wilson was signed and linebacker Alan Baxter was released.

Wilson was waived earlier this week when the team signed linebacker Stevenson Sylvester back to the roster. Wilson might be a littler banged up right now after suffering a hamstring injury in the loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Baxter was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Illinois. He had a strong preseason making the conversion from defensive end to outside linebacker.

I really had high hopes for Alan Baxter. Hope he finds himself back on the team somewhere down the road.

You gotta be freakin kidding me!?! Behind Woodley and Jones we have Worilds who is a FA next year and the ever unimpressive C.Carter… yea, so lets get rid of promising young prospects why don’t we

  • James Kling

    Seems odd.

  • Dr. Doom

Well lets look at this with perspective, he was doing his damage against guys who are now delivering televisions for Best Buy. And they see him in practice everyday, some guys just don’t have it as far as a future in the NFL. Remember Justin Vincent? Looked like world beaters in pre season. But always seemed to get released at final cuts.

  • Eric

Maybe no one else will claim Baxter and we get him back next year.

  • cencalsteeler

Welcome back! It seems like when all the dust settles, we picked up Will Allen (or Sly depending on how you look at it) and dropped a nice young prospect in Baxter.

  • AndyR34

Why would we look at it with that perspective? Don’t you know that what WE saw in pre-season against scrubs is WAY more valid than what the coaches see on an everyday basis? The coaches are blind, biased, and basicly incompetent when it comes to talent evaluation. Why can’t Tomlin and the FO get that thru their thick skulls? All they need to do is listen to us and we’ll go 16-0 every year with many more Lombardi’s…just like in Madden and our fantasy football leagues. LOL!

had to log in for this one. thats complete BS !!! Baxter looked very good in the pre season. he reminded me of a young james harrison with how he got at almost a 45 degree angle and getting pressure on the QB. yet the Steelers opt to keep chirs “the phantom” carter on the 53 man roster??? i really dont get it. well maybe its not hard to look like a james harrison when compared to a chris carter..

yeh hopefully, we can sign him back on down the line, he played well in pre-season, i don’t see what more he could do than that. I’d have had him on the 53 so what do i know?

  • Isaac Reveles

when Harrison was out with injuries and Carter got to start i dont think i saw him get 1 pressure or make 1 play.

Breaking News: Steelers release promising young prospect Alan Baxter. Rumors hint that Colbert is working on a deal to bring Clark Haggans back to Pittsburgh.

  • Alfredo Reveles

Steelers are in last place in sacks. Makes sense that we’d release the guy who led the team in sacks in the preseason then. Way to go Colbert.

  • steeltown

Thanks.. took a trip to Hanover to visit my father..and went to the Apple Harvest Festival over the weekend, good times

  • Kevin Gobleck

Wasn’t Harrison off and on the team before he landed a starting spot?

maybe DL’s retiring and we are anticipating the shift to the 4 3?

  • Shannon Stephenson

You never know how a guy will progress but I wish we could get explanations on why a guy who seemed to have upside was let go. Like someone mentioned below we have NO depth at OLB and only 1 guy with potential and now he is gone.

  • Dr. Doom

I wonder if some of these people have ever seen Major League. Soriano could not miss against a home run, the second someone threw a curveball oh that is why he was available. Could it be that Baxter looked so good because the other guy was so bad. But Tomlin sucks is so much easier. Lets bring back Cowher all of our problems will be solved.

  • chris ward

Steelers have little depth at OLB if Worilds walks. Hopefully the Steelers bring back Baxter next year.

  • chris ward

Hopefully the Steelers can bring back Baxter down the road at sometime. Looked like he had some potential during the preseason.

  • Dutchess Hershberger

another bad roster decision, why is baxter not on the 53 man roster instead of chris carter? baxter showed more pass rush potential in one preseason then carter showed in 4 years, some of the recent roster decisions are dumfounding

  • 20Stoney

Don’t consider them infallible. They released Brian Hoyer thinking they would resign him in a week and kept Leftwich. Arizona claims him, gets a 300 yard game out of him and puts a high tender on him so we can’t re-sign him. We draft Landry Jones. Arizona then drops him and Cleveland picks him up for nothing. To me that was a pretty big mistake that cost us a 4th rounder. They do screw up sometimes.

  • 20Stoney

And I won’t even get into the cutting Dwyer and starting Redman. Ok, I guess I just did….

  • T R

yea solved and we will have to wait 15 years plus to get to super bowl.. no thanks..

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

My thoughts exactly with sylvester over mcfadden

  • Chad H

Remember Woodley’s rookie preseason? Baxter reminded me of that. Now we cut someone who showed potential and keep Carter who has showed not a single pass rush skill. Nice work there. This move will bite us in the ass.
