Report: Steelers CB William Gay Fined $15,750 For Hitting Browns QB Jason Campbell In The Head

According to Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback William Gay was fined $15,750 for unnecessary roughness on Cleveland Browns quarterback Jason Campbell when “he unnecessarily delivered a forcible blow to his opponent’s head and neck.”

This play of course happened on the third quarter sack of Campbell that resulted in the ball being fumbled and returned by safety Will Allen down to the Browns one yard-line. The Steelers scored a touchdown on the very next play.

As you can clearly see in the animated gif below, Gay’s left hand strikes Campbell right in the facemask. There was no penalty called on the play, but there should have been. Campbell also left the game with a concussion following the hit.

    Football is not football anymore

You can clearly see that Campbell’s head sinks right before contact. At the speed at which this happens, there is no time to react. It’s not like he targeted his head. That would be a different story….fine him as much as you want. Everyone needs to realize that the game is not played in Super Slo-Mo. I understand the need for safety, but the league needs to give consideration to such situations.

At least it wasn’t called a penalty!

They should have thrown a flag and the Browns would of had a 1st and 10 at the Pitt. 25 Game changing play. Im sure you all would have felt differently if it happened to Ben

  • Douglas Andrews

Dont tackle low Don’t hit the QB high if he ducks oh well..By the letter of the rule it should have been called a penalty but you gotta feel like the defensive guys can’t win. Even if not called a penalty you still run the risk of being fined. Wonder on plays like this one if they call a penalty would that have any bearing on the fine being lower?

I wish we could go back to old school 70/80/90’s football

  • Elijah Stevenson

Names me wonder if the defense held back last night because of the fear of being fined.

Are you kidding!!!! Guys go at Bens knees and there are no flags. They broke Bens nose and no flag. Qb’s are cry babies. I only wish we got half of the flags for the crap Ben goes through.

  • Tom

    Yeah…..it’s against the current rules.
Manning, Brady, and Brees get that call 100% of the time.
The rest of the league…….usually not.
Since I prefer to see the Steelers win….I am glad they missed it.

  • Tom

Does any other sport have nearly as many league issued fines as the NFL?

I understand that there is a time and place …..but it seems to have gone way too far. Kind of surprised that there is not a bigger outcry from the NFLPA.
    Where does it stop?

  • SumnerYoung

Campbell should pay half of Willie Gay’s fine because it was clear he didn’t want to be out there playing football in the cold anyway.

Godell should just put the QB’s in red dresses with flags that you pull like in flag football.
