Steelers Injury Report: Shamarko Thomas Ruled Out For Lions Game With High Ankle Sprain

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has now wrapped up his Tuesday press conference and during it he updated the injury situation as the team prepares to play the Detroit Lions this coming Sunday at Heinz Field.

Tomlin said defensive end Brett Keisel (foot) has plantar fasciitis and it could possibly limit him early in the week. He is, however, expected to be ready come Sunday.

Guard Ramon Foster (ankle) has a right ankle injury and he too is expected to be limited in practice. Safety Shamarko Thomas (ankle) was ruled out by Tomlin as his left ankle injury is more significant than that of Foster. Tomlin called it a high-ankle injury.

Center Fernando Velasco (knee) has a right knee contusion that could limit his participation in practice early in the week. Like Keisel, Tomlin expects him to be ready come Sunday.

Linebacker LaMarr Woodley (calf) has a left calf strain that will limit his participation early in the week. Tomlin said they will see how that progresses in regards to what his participation will be on Sunday.

Shamarko’s injury will stings us more than we’d expect. With Lions’ crazy vertical attack and Reggie Bush’s speed, we already would be planning a surplus usage of dime packages (of course I am just assuming but if I were a defensive coordinator, its what I would do) so I’m guessing Timmons will be spending more time covering Reggie Bush this upcoming Sunday.

I don’t like the match-up with the injuries we have now and especially with Ryan Clark’s rapidly decline.

I’ll probably get scalded for this but, with Shark out I think they should throw C.Brown out there in dime defense, lets see one last time if he’s learned anything or if he’s capable..or maybe see what Blake can do..if I had my choice I’d say Isaiah Green but I guess he’s lacking in special teams ability

Agree this will change the game plan for Timmons. Hopefully if Clark is looking like he brought his C game they will bring in Will Allen quickly in this game. It will be important to lead the game early and have a strong ground game in this one.

how about DVD instead- we know c brown can’t do it- might as well give DVD a try

Oh yea I forgot about that addition, he has better size than Blake and Green…so does Will Allen …could be interesting

Well not having Shamarko will hurt, but it could have been worse. It sounds like Foster, Velasko, and Woodley all have at least a chance of playing.
Shamarko could have helped a lot in nickel/dime packages against Bush or the slot WR, but it’s not as if he could have matched up against Megatron anyway (not sure any of our DB’s can, but Shamarko gives up like 9inches in height). Ike needs to match up against him, with help from a safety or even from Cortez in a nickel role if possible.

Yup! 100% in agreement. I’d tell him, “Here you go, man. This is why we drafted you. Bush needs to get zero YAC this week and we’ll be in with a chance. Wrap him up.” Brown gets the call.

Then pray that Cortez or Ike can slow down Calvin with some safety help.

Win and Cleveland win and the miracle scenario is still possible. Losing to a good Lions team is not a problem for me. I would like a high draft pick also.

You know the sad thing is win the games they should win…IE. Titans, Bears, Vikings, Raiders and they would be 7 – 2. How pathetic.

  • Well you can only hope Calvin Johnson trips over his dog then falls on Reggie Bush thus some how both get a high ankle sprain.

  • The Bears were a good team and if Ben doesn’t turn it over “4” times against the bears, the defense watches tackling for dummies they beat the Vikings and Lawrence Timmons does not lose contain against Oakland and Shawn Suisham makes 2/3 field goals they are 6-3. The Titans I chalk up to shell shock.

Probably just see Will Allen And Cortez out there with the base.

Ike will likely cover Megatron, with safety help at all times. This is gunna open up the field, so Willie Gay and Cortez Allen having good games would really help our chances of winning. Containing reggie bush is another must…
This is going to be a tough win. Fairley and Suh on the DL are going to be a nightmare all damn game.

Running game, yes! We GOT to approach the Lions same way we does with Peyton Manning- keep the time of possession high, keep the Lions offense off the field!

Problem? I feel like Todd Haley will go really conservative with this, which means he’ll also eliminate big plays unless we are behind. Not that I don’t want us to give them back the field but if opportunty presents, GO for it!
