Steelers TE Matt Spaeth To Begin Practicing Thursday

According to Burt Lauten, the Pittsburgh Steelers Communications Coordinator, tight end Matt Spaeth will begin practicing with the team on Thursday.

Spaeth, who suffered a Lisfranc injury during training camp, was re-evaluated on Tuesday and apparently proved to be ready to resume practicing.

Once Spaeth hits the practice field, the Steelers will have 21 days to activate him to 53-man roster or place him on season-ending injured reserve.

The Steelers have sorely missed Spaeth as a blocking tight end in the running game. Last season with the Chicago Bears, he graded out as the best run blocker at his position.

Spaeth almost certainly won’t be ready to play by Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, however. The Steelers play the Baltimore Ravens one week from today, so perhaps he can be ready to make his season debut by then. We’ll just have to wait and see.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Im thinking they are not sure just how healthy he is. How is he anymore healthy today than we would have been yesterday? Seems like they wanted to wait a bit before starting that 21 day countdown.

    Good news. Good luck Spaeth

My gut feeling of this situation is coming from 17 yrs in the rehab/sports med field……..Overall outlook is not good for this year. Fact is they had to activate him to practice at least. This doesn’t indicate by any means that he is ready to play for at least another 2-3 wks. His “practices” may be very gradual at first so best case scenario is the game after the Ravens IMO. Ultimately, I think he goes on IR. I hope I am wrong though!

I believe that even if Spaeth’s foot appears to be healthy enough, they will still not activate him if they lose one or both of the next two games. I think his health and the team still being in the hunt for a playoff spot will both be determining factors as to whether he sees the playing field this year. Why risk a re-injury if the team is going nowhere ? At any rate, I don’t think he could possibly be expected to be in any decent playing shape for at least 3-4 weeks under the best case scenario.

Kinda late if you ask me, we only needed him until Miller got up to speed still not saying he’s 100% though.

hope they dont activate him being injured and releaseing some one who isnt

  • Shannon Stephenson

I even believe that the Ravens game maybe tough for him to make.

Since we play the Ravens next Thursday, I doubt he will be ready for that game. I think the Dolphins game is a more realistic expectation.
