Festivus Airing Of The Grievances Thread – 2013

Being as today is Festivus, I thought we would have an “Airing of the Grievances” thread in order to let everyone get things out of their system following the Pittsburgh Steelers 38-31 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. So, here you go, let it all out.

Also, let me be the first to wish you a Happy Immaculate Reception Day as well.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Don

oh, you mean like why did it take so long to figure out beachum was their best left tackle on the roster for the last two years..

  • Shea Fahr

I think the Team has shown me quite a bit since opening 0-4. There are plenty of areas to get better in the offseason but I believe 2014 will be a much better year. I like where we are heading.

  • Jeff

Woodley – Take a damn pay cut, you haven’t been yourself for years!
Steelers – Cut Woodley if he doesn’t take a pay cut!

  • Jeff

Agreed. Finishing the season 8-4 after that start would be pretty encouraging, even if we don’t make the playoffs.

  • Shea Fahr

Yes and we stand a chance to finish at 4-2 this year in our OWN division a well.

  • JayBirdDC

Why didnt the Steelers freakin resign Keenan Lewis? This team could be different with him. Now we have zero depth at LB and the secondary. Also, Woodley also sucks.

  • Chad H

We should not lose a draft pick. The ravens tanked themselves yesterday. Fire Roger and find some refs that know what the hell they are doing. The refs have been deciding games and it’s bullshit.
Woodley I was a fan. Now take a pay cut so we can keep Worilds!
Next year start 4-0 so we aren’t digging our way out.

  • Don

Felix Jones is horrible!…Stop putting him on the field!..Did anyone else see that kickoff he totally screwed up??..it had good potential in a game where the Steelers where getting great yards on kickoffs.

  • Jacob Dixon

I wish ike Taylor could pick a pass off

  • Jacob Dixon

    No cap space

  • JayBirdDC

I know, thank you. It’s a grievance airing, not a logical fact based discussion.

  • Chris Maxwell

Haley should stay, Tomlin should stay and Dick LeBeau needs to be run out of town asap. His corners get picked on because of 10yd cushion, At least give them something new, and be creative.

  • Betz Smiff

Punters/Kickers being considered “defenseless”………. in the game yesterday there were at least 4 tackles made or assisted by punters/kickers…. On AB’s first return Dwyer clearly could have hit the punter hard but I am sure that last week’s fine entered his thinking leading him to gently push him right into AB which cost him a TD…. of course that’s assuming AB would have stayed away from stepping on the sideline……

  • 20Stoney

It’s mind boggling that a guy with that kind of athletic ability cannot at least occasionally catch a football.

  • Betz Smiff

Maybe but in this game the refs handed GB on TD on the BS call on the blocked FG and they also called two personal fouls that were “iffy” on one of the other GB TD drives…… not a conspiracy theorist but it sure looks like the NFL has it out for Pgh

  • dkoy85

I agree about the kick returning- If Sanders(injured) would have hit the hole Jones did he would have been gone!

  • Geoff Cordner

A win is a win is a win, but you know.. part of me that I hate to admit exists was secretly hoping for a crap year by the Steelers instead of a mediocre one. Now, instead I hold on to some incredibly unlikely possibility of playoffs (PLAYOFFS?!) when in reality they won’t make it which will probably lead into another lackluster off season. Which of course leads to yet another mediocre season in 2014.

Instead, if they did “shoot the pooch” this year at least the organization would shake things up. Now, that would make the offseason more interesting! Am I alone here?

  • Geoff Cordner

    Bye bye Felix Jones!

  • dkoy85

Sounds like Rex Ryan will be on the street- He’d look good in black and yellow :-)

  • Elijah Stevenson

It’s obvious we can win without Woodley he’s a good LB but there’s no point in using if he’s hurt all the time. Missing out on some of the most important games of our season and get paid like that no I can’t agree with that he needs to go

  • Elijah Stevenson

Honestly lewis was an okay CB but he was no difference maker

  • Elijah Stevenson

It was amazing how we thought had that interception but the ball went through his hand to the reciever now that’s one of the easiest interceptions a player can get.

  • cp72

Don’t think for a minute that Tomlin would like his d-coordinator giving quoteable material to the media.

On the other side thought Rex was very entertaining on Hard Knocks….. but he’s not a Steelers kind of guy.

  • dkoy85

I’m sure you’re not alone but maybe you should look at it in a different light. The more important thing is the young guys learned a lot and learned how to rally and what it takes to win the the NFL. If we had a crap year there’s no telling how that would affect this team- But by winning the young guys learn how to be winners and how to prepare to be winners. I do know that the shake up next year would only delay the transition we are currently in- and seemed to have pushed through.

  • Geoff Cordner

True! Okay, I am a bit more content in how this season unfolded. I can cancel my therapist appointment now! Talk about feeling conflicted …

  • JayBirdDC

From PFF, “Keenan Lewis, has quietly been one of the top free agent signings
in the NFL this season. He’s never given up more than 44 yards in a
single game and his coverage ability has allowed Rob Ryan’s blitz-heavy
schemes to be so effective.” Compare that to explosive plays Ike and Cortez have given up this season. Steelers need to keep talent they develop when they have it. Keenan is not great, but better than average, and besides Gay and Cortez, who do we have in the pipeline?

  • Geoff Cordner

/Sure its way too early and a bit reactionistic.. but who would you rather have Worlids and Lewis or Woodley?

  • Chris Maxwell

Man could you imagine Rex with the Black N Gold. There are two defensive coordinators in the league that made Matt Flynn look like Aaron Rodgers, what do they have in common? They are both 105 yrs of age. Dick and Kiffon, at some point age catches up to coaching also.

  • Geoff Cordner

I would find it personally offensive if the NFL penalized the Steelers via the draft because of Tomlin’s poor decision!

  • Rosco

We would have lost if Rodgers had played!!! WhyO Why are we still in this thing!! Next Sunday will be depressing!!

  • Kysteeler

Why does DeCastro not like Pouncey?

  • Steeler Wheeler

Going forward, that terrible O-line may not be a weakness,

  • srdan

    lmao

  • Betz Smiff

MT using the word “obviously” … mix in a “clearly”, “evidently” or “plainly” already…

  • Chris Ranieri

    this is good humor lol

  • Rob H

On top of that, I played catch once with those gloves that they wear, and you almost have to TRY not to catch the ball. It’s obviously a psychological thing with him, early in his career I saw him make one of the most acrobatic interceptions I’ve seen, yet he can’t catch a ball that hits him right in the hands, it’s always been a mind-boggling thing with him.

  • Jarod Wells

Sometimes I wonder if he is being a smart ass to the media with those replies, because don’t think for one second he does not know how his conferences are ridicules by media, pitt media, and even players more than likely joking about it in the locker room. He might not know, but part of me believes he does lol

  • Lamarr56

Please don’t let Felix touch the ball. He is awful. He screwed up on that kickoff twice in on play. If you want to give another back touches, feed Dwyer! Dwyer goes hard every play whether it’s making big blocks, or lowering the shoulder for extra yards. He deserves more touches.

  • Jay

I think Todd Hayley is a good fit for this team and for Ben he needs to stay in the last two years bens numbers dramatically increased yes they are dink and dunk plays but they are very effective and it’s keeping Ben upright and healthy

  • steeltown

They already did a lot of shaking up if you think about it..entering this season we had a 2nd yr OC and brand new WR and Special Teams coaches..we then started multiple rookies on Offense and Defense throughout the year like Bell, Jones, Thomas, Williams, Garvin and Wheaton.. I think it took a while for things to start to gel, obviously there is still a lot of work to do, especially at OL, DB and OLB depth..and im sure we’ve seen the last of a few guys that I wont mention. But in the end the way these players and coaches have pulled together should go a long way in the mindset heading into next year

  • Chad H

We went 0-4 then 2-6 but if we finished 5-0 we would be in the drivers seat. Losing to the Ravens and Dophins, who I believe we are better than, were the ones that took us out of it.

  • Rick M

Lewis was beaten on one play yesterday by Carolina, otherwise he completely shut down his side. Meanwhile Cortez Allen played 8 to 10 yards off his receiver for most of the game and gave up a number of completions. If he hadn’t got a lucky interception when Flynn was hit by one of his teammates, he’d be on the ‘loser’ list for sure.

As for not having the cap money to sign Lewis (i.e. offering him more than New Orleans), why are we re-structuring a 33-year old CB’s (who gets beat a lot) contract and letting 27 year old Lewis walk away. It is so difficult to find good corners in this league and we just let one walk away without so much as an offer.

It was a dumber decision than Woodley’s contract IMO, because management could not foresee his injury problems or lack of motivation.

  • Rick M

Agree completely that we shouldn’t lose a draft pick, or have one of our picks moved back – especially in light of a Miami coach doing the same thing. But the league tried to keep the Miami fine relatively quiet/secret and they have not backed off their initial suggestion that there could be later punishment for Tomlin’s indiscretion.

I bet you the later punishment will still happen. Goodell has an obvious hate-on for the Steelers and he’ll use his minions to further it before the draft.

  • Don

The problem with tanking in the NFL is that it’s such a crap shoot. Not even the #1 overall pick is a slam dunk. However, one thing is certain: the higher the pick, the more expensive the contract.

  • Don

Obviously you haven’t attended the same public-speaking classes the Mike Tomlin has….. ;)

  • Ike Evans

    More Wheaton….less sanders

  • J&LSteeler

For true. We don’t fare well against the “elite” qbs of the league. The slice and dice us. All done with moving players like chess pieces with the eye, and then putting the ball on the money!

  • Patrick J Brophy

If and buts. We won, and Flynn aint a push over.

  • J&LSteeler

AB is the best receiver we’ve had in a while – the stats bare that out, but, I wish he were a better blocker down field. He doesn’t have to barrel roll any one, but, sheesh, at least put your hands on somebody and engage! We would have had a lot more yards from scrimmage on a lot of plays…

  • ND_Steel

Lewis was our best CB by the end of last season and he’s been a huge part of the Saints turn around.

  • ND_Steel

I would argue if he just had 15-20 more INTs (which would just be 2 a year over his career, he would be borderline HOF material. Short of his benching by Cowher for a brief time and one horrendous playoff game against Tebow, he has been THE shutdown corner on numerous top defenses that have gone to three SBs.

  • Betz Smiff

    Obviously……

  • johnhoien

    K. Lewis definitely was a differance maker. The year he was up for FA I believe he lead the league in passes deffended … Totally agree we need to be concerned about depth.. And resigning Lewis would have been great if possible.

  • johnhoien

True.. I felt we needed Lewis this season on many occasions.

  • Jason Armes

This usually isn’t my type of thing, but its just one thing I have noticed. Why does Timmons each year start off so slow? By the last half of the season he is stud material, but the 1st 6 weeks, nothing! I wish he played like he does the last half for the whole season. That would be awesome.

There I did. I don’t feel better though. Just sad one last week left of steelers football before the camping out on Mannings sack occurs for the football media the rest of the year.

    Jason

  • dkoy85

That’s my only stipulation with Rex- His mouth. I do think he is a big players coach and I do think he would fit into Pittsburgh though.

  • johnhoien

Felix Jones has been extremely good at running the zone read and has done a nice job on kick offs.. Sanders is injury prone.. I have no problem w/ Jones this year.. Usually picks up positive yards.. Has not fumbled… Good job.

  • dkoy85

Sure has been a roller coaster ride for sure!

  • Betz Smiff

What is the fascination with Wheaton? Almost as many broken digits as he has catches……sure he will turn out to be ok but for now he hasn’t shown anything to lead you to believe he will be the #2 next year

  • blackandgoldBullion

I was thinking about a Top 10 list, but I think that would be a number that is quite limiting. I certainly believe Tomlin needs a nice Christmas present on Football Theory and Time Management. I didn’t think there were so many ways to be absolutely silly with regards to wasting timeouts. It seems each week he finds a new way to surprise us. Shaking my head so much my neck hurts.

I want to see everyone get a chance to play. This will keep most players from having great stats but also allow the Steelers to sign some guys for less money than if they were out there full time. I know what you’re going to say …. how is that possible when you don;t have decent subs? I think about it the other way. If a sub plays only 10-20 plays, he can still make a great contribution, just by playing like he’s possessed, instead of having to pace himself.

I want more Cody Wallace type nasty. Did you see him yesterday playing right through the whistle? There were some Packers getting pissed and retaliating and even taking a penalty. I know the guy is never going to do much, but I want a tough Steelers team, like the old days.

I want to see Clark hammer someone coming across the middle one more time before he hangs it up.

Man, I could write a ton more stuff, but Merry Christmas to all.

  • Aric Brown

it amazes me how people allready know that Wheaton is a better option than sanders… he’s shown that in his 6 ( or whatever ridiculously low number) offensive snaps this year

  • Aric Brown

i hate seeing Felix every 2nd and 3rd quarter

  • Dan

Please let the era of contract restructuring to push debt to future years be over.

  • Dan

This doesn’t effect the Steelers, much but it is kind of fun to watch ownership screw up the Redskins and the Cowboys so much. If I was running the Cowboys, I’d hire Tebow. Romo plays the first 55 minutes, Tebow plays the last 5 minutes.

  • Dan

Although I really don’t care about any professional sports team other than the Steelers, I sometimes feel inclined to stay involved when the Steelers miss the playoffs and get a little behind other teams. I find the Manning/Denver story interesting, but I think they’re likely one and done in the playoffs. So I guess the Eagles would be the most tolerable non-Steeler team to follow.
Anybody else have a team they kinda sorta support in a Steeler-less playoff season?

  • Dale

My grievance is with the strength and conditioning side of the operation. Too many injuries, especially on the line, for several years in a row. Maybe it’s bad luck, but maybe it’s time to shake some things up in the way they prepare their bodies to play.

  • Jacob Dixon

    Worilds and Lewis

  • Chris Ranieri

Second that on the Clark comment.

  • DoctorNoah

Derek Moye is going to break out next season, mark my words!

  • Nolrog

I still think the OL needs an upgrade. They have played as the season went on, but there is still much room for improvement both on the starting 5 and in depth.

  • Betz Smiff

at least until they assemble another super bowl caliber roster……. I’ll take the pushing $ to future years any day to keep a team together for a 3 SB run……

  • joed32

Rex wouldn’t look good in any color.

  • treeher

Lewis wanted to play back in his home town and probably would have signed there even if Steelers made a better offer (sort of like Wallace turned down more money to go to Miami).

  • Aric Brown

Moye is the big bodied receiver that Ben dreams of… but I dunno… The way I figure was if they though Moye had a shot at succeeding Sanders/Cotchery we would have a seen a bit more of him besides the occasional goal line fade… from my observations it seems he succeeding the situational role of an injured Plaxico Burress…. heres to hoping though
