Mike Adams Might Have To Face One Of The Hottest Defensive Ends In The League On Sunday

With Pittsburgh Steelers starting left tackle Kelvin Beachum still sidelined on Wednesday by the left knee sprain that he suffered during the Thanksgiving night loss to the Baltimore Ravens, it’s starting to look like Mike Adams might just make his first start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins since he was benched after the Week 4 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Should Adams indeed start, his return to the field will include him facing one of the hottest passing rushing defensive ends in the league right now.

On Wednesday, Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon was named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week after sacking New York Jets quarterbacks three times this past Sunday. In fact, of Vernon’s 10.5 sacks that he now has on the season, five have come in the last three games. If that isn’t enough, Vernon has also played the run well on his side in the last three games to boot.

To make matters worse, Adams is currently battling a left ankle sprain that he suffered just a few plays after replacing Beachum in the game against the Ravens. He practiced fully on Wednesday, however, so take that for what it’s worth.

Prior to being benched, Adams allowed four sacks, six quarterback hits and 13 hurries in 179 pass blocking opportunities through the first four games of the season. According to the pass blocking efficiency formula used by Pro Football Focus, that equates to a dismal 89.8 PBE number.

Needless to say, with the season now down to four games remaining, the Steelers will have a good idea on Sunday whether or not Adams has progressed any as a left tackle if he starts.

Keeping Vernon away from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be a potential challenge for the Ohio State product, but if he conquers that challenge, perhaps there will still be some hope that he can eventually turn into a long-term starter at the position. If he doesn’t, Roethlisberger might be quickly back on track to break the Steelers single-season times sack record.

Ben, put some rear view mirrors on your helmet this week.

Adams has looked so bad on film. How can someone with so much potential just lack so much technique? I assume the line coaches are seeing everything we’re seeing and more. Shouldn’t bend, leverage, foot movement and hand placement be something easily teachable?

If you are willing to learn and attain what is learned and able to apply it.
Somewhere he has a disconnect in the learning process or is just lazy. I hope he can turn things around but the way Beachum had been playing in the last 3 games tells me he learns quick and is able to apply it. Not to mention he is athletic with quick feet and hands.

Shouldn’t bend, leverage, foot movement and hand placement be something the scouts and coaches analyze pre-draft?

not much to say about adams other then the high hopes just are not there from draft day one ….ben dont have time for the steelers to train and teach a left tackle like him like they would of in years pass ….ben needs a tackle now not 3 years from now ….and to keep him as a starter just isnt worth the time it take he belongs on the practice squad and a tackle drafted next year and a good one brought in from wavers or off wire after seasons over to start…..with a pass happy league there isnt time to teach a tackle his spot in a year or two starting ..you need a starter then bring the new guy in later ..steelers have been useing cast offs way to much to plug holes and hopeing a guy shows improvement after 3 years of nothing up to that point ….

So, if The Steelers have to give up a draft pick, can we choose our #2/56 from 2012?

From L-R, Gilbert, Whimper, Wallace, DeCastro, Adams.

I’ve been worried about the Steelers O-line against the fronts they have been playing the past couple of weeks and they have hold their own. If they pull it off again this week I would be surprised with how decimated the O-line is.

This is Mike Adams moment of redemption. The Steelers need Mike Adams to be the LT they’ve expect when they handed him the job in OTAs/TC.

  • Intropy

Nuts to that. Put Landry Jones out there.

  • Chris Ranieri

Just like the lineup we started the season with! Lol

  • Steve

This is make-it or cut him. Adams, this is your last chance to redeem yourself, else – BYE BYE!

  • Bradley Campbell

I don’t see that- He played pretty well at RT last year. I always thought it a little bit Wishful thinking for him to be a LT. He did not get a lot of reps at Ohio State. He is under contract. We are hoping it starts clicking in.
