Roethlisberger Says Ask Haley About Not Running In The Second Half Following Loss To Dolphins

Following the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-28 loss Sunday to the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was asked if he knew why the offense didn’t run as much in the second half. While I do not know what tone was used in his answer, Roethlisberger’s reply will surely make a few waves.

“No idea. Coach [Todd] Haley’s over there. You can ask him,” Roethlisberger said.

We will get into the specifics of the second half a little later on, but Roethlisberger was also asked following the game if the Steelers need to be remade after two straight non-winning seasons. According to Aditi Kinkhabwala of the NFL Network, the quarterback declined to answer that question.

The Steelers are still mathematically alive for the playoffs, but we all know that the loss to the Dolphins was more than likely the final nail in the coffin being as the Baltimore Ravens won on Sunday.

You have to think that regardless of what has happened as far as the progress made on offense over the course of the last few weeks, that offensive coordinator Todd Haley very well could be gone following the season. As hard as both have tried to make it seem like everything is fine between them, you can’t help but think that there is still some sort of disconnect.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Jerome72

There’s is for sure a disconnect! Time for Haley to be let go and although I like Tomlin, it may be time for a change there too!

  • J&LSteeler

Hell yea, there’s some sort of a disconnect. LeSean McCoy ran for over 200 yards in 8 inches of snow over in Philly. Haley should have never been hired. He needs to be gone. Its easier to replace the OC than it is a (former) franchise QB.

  • HopalongCassidy

The OC is not the reason the Steelers are losing. They are losing because they are not a good team. The defense sucked against Miami. That is why they lost.

  • cp72

The fact remains we handed our defense a four point lead with 5 minutes left in the game. I agree we should have ran the ball more, but our defense is shadow of what it use to be.

I know he scored a touchdown, but Troy is nothing more than a 10 million dollar a year nickel linebacker that guesses wrong to much. I appreciate Troy for all the great memories, but it’s time to move on.

  • costanza2k1

so now he doesn’t want the ball in his hands….hmm ok

  • J&LSteeler

The Steelers as a whole suck. Offense, Defense and Special teams. You have to start somewhere. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but, this aint your grandpa’s NFL. It’s all about offense these days. Ask Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, freaking Tom Brady, et al. Next up, the aging players on defense. But, what do you have to say about our offensive line? It ALL starts up front. Let’s get a better offensive minded OC (a Wiz, Chan, or even a Norv type of innovative mind) in here.

  • Game_Time

Fuck Haley and the horse he’ll ride out of town on.

  • Betz Smiff

Tired of Rothlisberger, get over it. He’s your coach at the moment so just answer the question without hidden messages. If you don’t like it your contract is done in 2 years hit the road.

  • Betz Smiff

How about asking Tomlin why he didn’t punt on 4th and 10 from the 12 with 2:33 left in the game. 2 TO’s plus 2 minute warning probably gets you the ball back with a minute and a half left down 3.

  • Superdriller316

Tomlin is safe. If they fire him the Steelers are still on the hook for his contract till 2016. That’s like another 20 million or so.

  • J&LSteeler

Easy answer. For all of his “eloquence”, he’s not a very good tactician.

  • Cj2007

Todd Haley needs to be the first coach fired when the regular season ends. Dick Lebeau should be the second.Since M. Munchak will be fired, let’s get him to coach/build our young O-Line The older players on defense need to be released as well. I. Tayor, T. Polamalu,B. Keisel, L. Foote. On offense E. Sanders should not be resigned. Ben needs a couple of big, fast sure handed WR’s. We need a young stud TE to start grooming behind H. Miller. Let’s just take the cap hits this year and build through the draft.

  • r4kolb

Although most of us agree Tomlin mismanages a lot of games remember its called the Rooney rule for a reason. Tomlin is here until he wants to go. No way the spineless Rooneys get rid of him. Our D has been the Achilles heel all year. I would like to see Haley actually call a good game for 4 quarters. Time to get rid of the old and slow D players like Ick and Clark. Unfortunately like so many before him Woirlds will be gone next year. Funny how we can’t keep other teams from signing our good free agents but we never seem to sign ANY. Still say it’s going to be a long next 2 or 3 years.

  • Dwayne Ferguson

Ben needs to shut up. He doesn’t seem smart enough to realize all the heat and leaks to the media about him this year is because of his stubbornness to listen to the coaches and his seemingly not following the teams game plan.
Ben is a great QB and I am glad we have him but he still has some growing up to do. Even if he thinks he should have run the ball more he should keep that in house.
I also think it is ridiculous seeing people knock Haley for not running the ball more. You can’t win for losing.
Do you guys honestly believe that if we still had Ariens we would have run the ball more?
    People have short attention spans.

  • Betz Smiff

    U got it

  • Betz Smiff

    Other than that we’re ok………….

  • Betz Smiff

That’s what a 109 million $ QB does to your cap…….pick your poison, Gradkowski and keep some young studs or Ben and a group of misfits

  • Betz Smiff

Ben has been a drama machine since he was drafted….can live with it when the Steelers are winning or appearing in SB’s but when they go 8-8 or worse 2 straight years it gets old fast…. I wouldn’t break the bank to extend him. They got 2 more years plus can franchise him if they need to, by then he will be a 13 or 14 yr guy and can move on to Arizona like all old Steelers do……..

  • Cj2007

    Oh I forgot….don’t re-sign R. Clark, now we are ok…..lol

  • sean mcmartin

Now that I am watching Seahawks vs niners, I say coaching is a big area the Steelers need changing. Both of these teams come out fired up and ready to compete..Boldin still making big plays..

  • J&LSteeler

Couldn’t agree more. We are just going to have to make up our minds that we will have to suffer for a few more possibly woefully inadequate years (according to the Steeler standard) before we can be better. But the sooner we start, the sooner we can turn it around. The organization needs to JUST DO IT! In the meantime, we probably got a couple more butt whippings to take this year.

  • WilliamSekinger

Right Ben. (Rolls eyes) … So Ben called 0 no huddle plays in the 2nd half? It was all Haley’s doing? Own up to the loss ya jerk and stop throwing your coaches under the bus.

  • Elijah Stevenson

Reality check the coaches r not the ones on the field the players are

  • SG

Haley’s done after the season and if the Steelers don’t show improvement next year, Tomlin should be on the hot seat. He’s been a joke this year, a year in which the AFC sucks and a decent playoff seed should have been ripe for the picking.

  • Cj2007

    Amen….

  • alex

the only success this offense has is in the no huddle, which has everything to do with Ben and little to do with the man that the door will hit in the arse as he leaves!

  • CrazyTerry

So Haley gets credit for the improved offense today , Ben since it was obviously his game plan in the second half? 21 of 28 points. 100% red zone. Geez, how bad was Arians with us then if the two in harmony were unable to produce more points than a Haley and Ben in disharmony?

  • Elijah Stevenson

Ben should be at the level of Tom Brady and Payton manning because he’s been there three times, performances like will of course not lit Ben on the elite QBs. And our draft picks have been a joke, I thought Jarvis Jones would be able to fill un for James Harrison but every game he gets mishandled and Jason Worilds has beaton him, haven’t seen a lot of shamarko, the only rookies that has impressed is L. Bell and Markus Wheaton

  • Elijah Stevenson

They were thinking about but I don’t think so

  • CrazyTerry

So why didn’t Ben run Bell more in the no huddle then? He cnat have it both ways today.

  • Douglas Andrews

Exactly be a pro about it even if you don’t like the OC. You think Peyton or Tom Brady would’ve said that about their OC’s.

  • Betz Smiff

If a draft pick is lost because of Tomlin’s act last week he should move on……….

  • Betz Smiff

    Markus Wheaton? Really?

  • GunsDontKillWoodleyKills

While I agree they should have ran the ball more, Haley did miss any tackles today.

  • Betz Smiff

Haley didn’t step out of bounds when there was no need either… for all the great things AB does, sometimes he makes some real bonehead mistakes…….

  • CrazyTerry

The cap problems are not because eof Ben’s salary. Colbert has mismanaged the cap badly. Should have taken the 3rd for Sanders and saved 2.5M. Should have traded Ike and signed K Lewis. Now Ike is untradeable with his poor showing this year. Should have asked Troy to take a paycut ala Harrison considering Ed Reed was no worse than Troy last year and he had to go looking for a job. Colbert should not have redone Ike’s contract midyear to make it harder to cut him next year. Colbert has made a lot of mistakes.

  • CrazyTerry

Haley needs to go because of stuff like the timeout on 4th down. How the hell do you not have a play ready. But it is interesting that this offense was no better under Arians despite Arians and Ben being buddies. Arians is coaching with a chip on his shoulder and head coaching seems to suit him better. But the offense has improved over the last few weeks.

Lebeau is partly responsible for the current mess. The slow development of K Lewis and Heyward is on him. I don’t blame him for Worldis slow development because Wordlis had injuries and Worldis truly didn’t show enough in the past. So Lebeau can’t know Worldis would be this good. The league has also figured out Lebeau’s schemes. Plus even the veterans are not paying attention their assignments under Lebeau. That is a coaching breakdown to me when veteran secondary players keep losing focus of what their assignment is.

  • Dutchess Hershberger

how about missed tackles everywhere by everyone, dropped passes repeatedly specificall sanders, zero production from retun game, long field after long field, the no huddle and hurry up works well but you can still run from this formation, which didn’t happen in 2 nd half, and once again Tomlin completely mismanages timeouts, other than hayword no one makes plays on d line, as a long time STEELER FAN its evident the there are many many problems and Tomlin is not the guy to fix them,

  • Shea Fahr

Both of those Teams have yet to pay the premium cap killing price for their QB’s yet either. It is a cycle.

  • Betz Smiff

Thought Heyward was a beast today especially early in the game

  • Betz Smiff

    Never

  • Betz Smiff

Probably didn’t have a play ready because the HBC’s decision to go for it defied any logic….Steelers were down 3 points not 8 AND had 2 TO’s plus the 2 minute warning……..it was stupid no matter what the excuse was….

  • Betz Smiff

No Cap problems with a 109 mil QB? Seriously… and wait til next year when it gets worse. Do agree Colbert mismanaged but that got them to 3 SB’s …

  • Betz Smiff

    LOL Caaaan’t Stand Ya”

  • greeny

I live in Baltimore. Flacco last week said he is above the wildcat. He said is own son will never be as good as he at football. He has said that he is an elite QB. The fans and media love Flacco for saying these things. Ben is no more a diva than any other in the league.

  • JAMESH

    With little baked-bean teeth………..

  • FrankieCC

We were doomed from the start. The Steelers win the toss n with the snow coming down hard we take the kickoff….wtf?….what did we do but go 3 n out….then to start the 2nd half the snow had stopped n Miami got the ball n got their offense going right down the field…..everyone knows to kickoff n put your defense out there 1rst when the weather is bad….well everyone but Tomlin….

  • sean mcmartin

Yes and I can’t blame them for keeping some guys past their prime. The patriots seem to be able to reload every year..I think Tomlin is responsible for this decline as well as aging players.
seven years ,,the learning curve should have ended 6 years ago..

  • costanza2k1

It’s not a lie of you believe it lol

  • Betz Smiff

Been one thing after another with him, not so much what he says but what he does…….motorcycles, Georgia, Las Vegas…sure Im missing other bs

  • MP34

I think it’s a rather routine answer. Ben has said this stuff before. Besides, I’ve never heard of Ben ever wanting to run the ball more.

  • mem359

K Lewis gave a home town discount… to New Orleans. No way the Steelers could have signed him without significantly overpaying him.

  • Dorkewicz

Tomlin has made quite a few questionable calls during his tenure as a head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but did you see the way the defense played leading up to that decision? With a few minutes left on the clock and a 28-24 lead, our defense could not hold them.

  • mem359

If a draft pick is lost because of Tomlin’s act, then a mob should picket the NFL offices, because that would be an unprecedented massive overreaction to the “crime”.

  • MP34

The fans will never will never wait through a rebuilding year. The next coach will be as big of a bum, and we’ll scream about how the Steelers were cheap and should have never parted with Polamalu and other vets. And after you draft two WRs and a TE, you’re now leaving picks 4-7 to find a CB, S, an ILB, which would actually help us more.

  • T R

if a pick is lost because of Tomlins no penalty call.. That means a draft pick should be taken from any team that a coach get a penalty on or fineā€¦ NFL office is a joke…

  • T R

offense did their job.. Defense got a lot points put on them in snowy weather. i would hated to see the defense in good weather..

  • Dale

So what should have he said? If they’re not in the hurry up he’s not calling the plays. If he doesn’t know why Haley got away from the run, what answer can he give?

  • Mike Carroll

    Thanks Terry.

  • lone pistol

yep I always defend him but the loss of a potential draft pick ( if on purpose darn him and on accident worse you should know better) clock management etc.. he needs to step his game up bro

  • Superdriller316

What about the blocked punt earlier in the game? That might have something to do with it too. Or about the D giving up three 70+ YD drives for scores. If they are going to score, it’s better they do it fast and give yourself another shot. This way if you hold them it’s only 3 points and a TD will win the game. A shorter field gives them less room to move around VS a longer field which gives more room for 1st downs and killing the clock.

  • Chad H

I believe he gave an honest answer. It’s not his decision it’s the OCs. So when Ben was asked he said ask the OC. I believe everyone is reading way too much into this one.

  • AndyR34

So…should the FO follow your advice??? Should we consider anything you say in the future seriously??

  • CrazyTerry

Amazing when trhe Miami guy had to make a play , he doesn’t step out of bounds despite being double tackled by Allen and then that pitiful Troy tackle. As great as AB has been, the one play he had to make, he didn’t despite wide open sideline space.

  • AndyR34

Better start organizing…I know where you can get a good deal on tar and torches! :)

  • Superdriller316

I must say, your comments don’t make a lot of sense. Arians might be coaching with a chip on his shoulder, but the Cards are not a lock to make the playoffs.

Lebeau being responsible for the slow development of Lewis and Heyward is as dumb as saying its the fault of the principle for a 3rd grader who doesn’t know how to read. Lewis might be a slow learner, or maybe it’s Ray Horton’s fault as his secondary coach. Heyward was playing behind the BEARD who played lights out last year. When veteran players aren’t doing their assignments, they need benched. The bad thing is that we can’t bench the first string D for the second team D. It has nothing to do with coaching breakdown.

Most of this team went to SB XLV and some have two rings already. Those are the ones who are throwing pick 6’s and missing tackles. So blaming coaches for not getting the players prepared or for the players not doing their job is ridiculous. I have no problem blaming a coach for calling a bad game but not for players performance or lack there of.

  • mrljboyce

The Steelers have not had a home field advantage in I can not tell you when. To let a Florida team come into your house and shove the football in your rear is beyond embarrassing. Especially with what was at stake. The Steelers are a very soft team now…

  • NW86

    1. Shut up Ben, I understand you’re frustrated, but that shows a lack of professionalism.
    2. I’m now convinced that Todd Haley will be out of a job in 21 days. The defense is equally responsible for this season as the offense, but it’s clear that Todd and Ben aren’t on the same page, and their late-game clock management has been terrible all year. One of them has to go, and it won’t be Ben.

  • 4-12

Fire Tomlin? Really man? SMDH. Some of y’all fans are like spoiled children, mad that you cant get that shiny new toy. So your telling me Tomlin (who had 2 losing seasons as coach which those 2 losing seasons was never under .500) should get fired? 2 Superbowls? 4 Playoff appearances? Thats an idiot statement!

  • 4-12

Please tell me why Todd Haley should get fired? How many good WR’s do we have? How many balls Sanders missed? and How can we run the ball with that O-Line? You cant blame Haley for players production

  • 4-12

DEFINITELY ON POINT! I LIKE THAT XBOX AVATAR! AHAHA

  • joed32

Yep, he didn’t trust his punter and he sure didn’t trust the defense. I would have punted but I can see what he was thinking. Ben’s a great QB but he’s always been a “drama queen”. If you don’t like your coach don’t say anything either way.

  • Betz Smiff

A true pro like Peytard would have answered something like this “the plays we ran were good ones. had we executed them like we are capable we would have won the game” He would not include some veiled message to his OC. I’d respect Ben more if he had just been honest and said, “Go ask the ahole OC, he calls all the BS plays in the playbook. He’s a DH, I don’t like him and I am going to do whatever I can to get him out of here” Then he would have at least been honest. This issue with him and his “step OC” since his real “daddy OC” was divorced is childish. He gets paid to play the game, just do it and stfu.

  • Betz Smiff

Argument is BS. If the he thinks his D is so bad then how’s he know the Dolphins are not going to score a TD and go up by 10??? Then its Game over for sure. He screwed it up again, no excuses. Dolphins were going to run the ball on at least 1st and 2nd down to make the Steelers use their TO’s, if you can’t stop what you know is coming then so be it.

  • costanza2k1

What’s crazy is when things work, he makes sure to tell everyone he had input…he calls the plays…blah blah blah…just be a pro

  • costanza2k1

Time to format and reinstall…that includes Ben…give him a chance to full his SB goals elsewhere.

  • Shea Fahr

Ben is having a record year in stats…he should be thanking Haley. I too am curious why they abandoned Bell and the running game but Haley does not coach those Defensive players who ultimately lost the game.

  • Superdriller316

The Dolphins were going to do what ever it took to kill the clock, no matter what.

Feel free to fill out an application. Seems you have all the answers. I’m SURE the Rooney’s will welcome you with open arms. All you have to do is point out what a great decision maker you are. I’m sure they will JUMP at the opportunity to fire Tomlin and pay him the 15-20 million left on his contract.

  • Jerome72

Actually, it was an opinion! I said it may be time for a change! After two losing seasons and him being in charge of an undisciplined team, everything should be considered! Obviously, his contract won’t allow it but for me, enough is enough! It’s time for a change whatever that change is! It’s idiotic to bring up his past accomplishments when they’re 5-8, what does the past have to do with anything?

  • JohnnyV1

The attention being paid to this issue (not so much here, elsewhere) is ridiculous. The focus should be on the defense who missed tackles and allowed huge plays out of plays that should have been 5-10 yd gains max. Or special teams that can’t seem to find a punter worth a dam. The offense played well enough to win.

  • ND_Steel

Defense sucked, but they still had a four point lead with 5 mins to go and the ball and the offense couldn’t salt it away or even get in FG range twice. Offense inexplicably went away from the run despite setting up very manageable downs and distance. Why have Bell if you aren’t going to use him in games like this? It is obvious Ben and Haley aren’t on the same page, and probably don’t even like each other. If one has to go, it has to be Haley.

  • ND_Steel

Aside from the int, he had a horrible game (for a guy making
$10 M). Missed another pick six right in the chest, got caught in the middle on the long runs (if he is going to play LB, he has to be able to somewhat shed a block), and horribly missed two key tackles.

  • ND_Steel

With frustrations running high, we have no leadership to answer the tough questions…Ben? Clark? Tomlin?…these are our mouth pieces and they aren’t exactly handling it well. Boy do we miss Hines, Casey, Farrior…

  • Guest

Tom and Peyton might if they were out in Ben’s position with an OC that is completely incompetent.

The fact is also that Tom and Peyton’s organizations would have enough respect for them, not to completely buck their opinions in regards to hiring Haley in the first place. Ben is not a rookie anymore, he is an accomplished two time Super Bowl champion. He knows what it takes to win.

As much as this is on Haley, this goes back to the rooneys. They shouldn’t have hired Todd, but he was recently fired and a friend of the family

  • costanza2k1

If we’re making changes for kicks lets get rid of Ben too :/

  • Guest

But they weren’t good plays. They were completely the wrong ones.. Everything about it was wrong. The problem with Haley is that he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, when he clearly isn’t.

Ben is taking responsibility. If Ben doesn’t start standing up for this team, it will be another year of complete incompetence by the offensive staff.

Todd Haley’s hiring has single handedly cost the steelers 2 years of playoff births.

He doesn’t know what he is doing.. That or he is the biggest troll on the planet; he does the exact opposite of what oils be done. He plays against ben’s strengths AND against what’s working on the field… It’s a total sideshow!!

  • costanza2k1

Just to play the other side here, so Ben turned over all no huddle calls to Haley for this game or does he only call no huddle when we win?

  • costanza2k1

    lol Peytard!

  • costanza2k1

Everytime Ben opens his mouth he takes the attention away from where it belongs…the defense.

  • Guest

Ben was absolutely right. Todd Haley has destroyed the steelers for 2 years.

  • Douglas Andrews

Agreed none of the guys of the past would be giving these responses with underlying messages. It’s getting old and it’s quite obvious that as great as BB is he’s never gonna be a leader on this football team. Geez BB learn to take the high road!

  • Douglas Andrews

Steelers win Ben’s response “. I called all my own plays and ran the no huddle offense from plays I picked out”….. Steelers lose Ben’s response..” Coach Haley is right over there you can go ask him”… classic leadership right?

  • Betz Smiff

Offense hasn’t been the issue most of the season including yesterday….. Ben isn’t the smartest guy anywhere he’s standing. I’m not defending Haley, quite frankly he’s been a circus too off the field which can’t be tolerated. Simply put it’s Ben’s job to play for the Steelers at the moment regardless of who is coaching him.

  • Betz Smiff

    Casey says…….”this sh*t’s a wrap”

  • Betz Smiff

It ‘s the Rooney’s fault they are into Tomlin 15-20 mil…….I can tell you this, most people that comment here could manage a game clock better than MT……

  • Superdriller316

So let’s just give back the 6th SB Trophy and the 8th SB appearance. Like I said, apply for the job. Let me know how you make out. I’m always looking for a good laugh.

  • Shannon Stephenson

It is tough to judge Haley because of the OL woes. The offense has looked good in the 2nd half of the season and I personally would give him one more year but I wouldn’t cry over it if he is canned

  • Betz Smiff

Ben is still an immature guy who doesn’t deserve the respect that Peyton or even Brady gets…. great talent but a knucklehead from his motorcycle riding days, to his antics with women in GA and LV, now his daily drama with his coach. We get it Ben you don’t like the guy so instead of disrespecting him in the media why don’t you just do it in the game. F whatever plays he calls and call your own… what are they going to do bench you and play the “pharaoh” Gradkowski? Seriously you can’t have it both ways, too few passes too many passes…which is it?

  • Betz Smiff

Read your posts dude you’ll get one

  • Superdriller316

I’d take it. I damn sure wouldn’t give two shits what you think or loose a winks sleep either

  • Betz Smiff

He “should do the opposite” and keep his mouth shut…..he perpetuates this BS.

  • Betz Smiff

and I would? really gay dude

  • Elijah Stevenson

Of course the coaching staff is just not giving him a chance
