Steelers 2013 Season Is Over

Thanks to the San Diego Chargers beating the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime, there will be no playoffs for the 8-8 Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop missed a 41 yard kick with less than 10 seconds left in regulation that would have sent the Steelers to the playoffs.

In overtime, the officials called Chargers safety Eric Weddle down on a fake punt rush even though no whistle had been blown. Weddle had the ball ripped out on the play, and it appeared to happen before a player’s helmet came off. The gutsy call kept the drive alive and the Chargers ultimately finished it with a field goal. The Chiefs had one more possession in which they could have tied or won the game, but they couldn’t pull it off.

More coming.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • DoctorNoah

Wide right. Ghost of Scott Norwood

  • Aric Brown

Amazed that the fake punt was not reviewed

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Im Literally crying my eyes out right now.

  • steeltown

Ahhhh! Damn whata game that was! Damn you Succop!

Good day of Football though, Go Steelers!!!

  • steeltown

    Indeed

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

We win one more game were probably in.

  • Aric Brown

I’m very unpatiently waiting for an explanation from the league

  • MP34

They breezed right by the Weddle fumble. No review.

  • Nolrog

I thought it was out. Should have been looked at.

  • Cols714

Yeah. I didn’t understand that at all.

  • Aric Brown

Will the league dock a draft pick from the refs for clearly having an impact on the outcome of the game

  • ScottB

#conspiracy to keep Stillerz out of the playoffs because of the Tomlin sideline incident.

    I hope KC gets rolled.

  • Nolrog

    Looks like we’re picking 16th.

  • Kevin Gobleck

Why the hell didn’t they at least take another look at that fake punt

  • Cols714

Why did they rule forward progress at the exact moment the ball came out? If he was allowed to be pushed past the 30 then he was still going forward. Ugh.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

15th thats what Dane Brugler said.

  • Aric Brown

They arent even showing any replays of the fake punt

  • Chris Ranieri

The future is still bright for us.

  • chris ward

Unreal game, Steelers come up just short of the playoffs, they had their chances this year.

  • alevin16

F Succop!!! I want nothing more than KC to be DESTROYED in their first playoff game and have Andy R at the mic blubbering about being rusty. We might not have deserved to go to the playoffs but at least we beat a pro team, not a team of second stringers. I hope San Diego gets plastered also.

  • Nolrog

    Even better.

  • ND_Steel

They don’t admit to mistakes… bring back the replacement refs…

  • mlc43

    forward progress is not reviewable.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Mark my words kc resting their starters is gonna bite them in the azz they are not used to winning let alone in a playoff environment to go in how they chose to do

  • DrakePirate

Dave … that was damn BS ….. from going literally to over 100-1 odds last week … to friggin that last game BSSSS ….. what a bad taste left in my mouth … horrible call for SD to go for it on 4th down/fake punt …. that was a horrible call and he shouldn’t have got it … good last second push … wowwwww what a way to misssss the playoffs … how many draft seed positions did we lose with that crap … looks like we’ll be around 15th or so … i guess not awful

The horrible thing is if KC had of won we would have played Cincy and I liked our chances … and the last few weeks we have been playing our best football and indeed had a chance to get into the big show …. once in anything is possible … tisk risk … what a shame … wow what a season … definitely not boring !!!!

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Hopefully We Draft Kelvin Benjamin and we draft good defenders. Next year we cant lose to teams we should easily beat otherwise we aren’t going to make the playoffs next year either.

  • Chris Ranieri

Can’t wait to cheer against KC next week though…

  • Berlusconi

I want that untimed down from the Miami game for a coach being on the field. With a win against Miami it would feel better now

  • Nolrog

    Without a doubt.

  • Curtis

Succop blew it. 8-8 after 0-4 start. So close yet so far. Who we taken in first round?

  • Jones

The sad thing is that this won’t even make for good post season football. A team that has been explosive & hot like the Steelers gets eliminated, & a team that can barely hang on (& needs a little help from the refs) to secure a win against a team of backups gets in. Love for the Steelers aside, it’ll be a less competitive post season without the black and gold. Oh well, I’m excited for what we can do next year with our young playmakers!

  • DrakePirate

Amen to KB … and some decent CB/S … we are very close to being a good football team … hopefully we don’t regress at the beginning of next season our Offense and running game is coming along … i really have no explanation for our improved OL play the second half of the season with the merry go round of replacements … makes no sense to me, i’ll just have to chalk it up to better coaching … but that said absolutely LOVE our potential next year, if we pick up 3-4 Key Personnel !!!

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

What young Playmakers? other then Bell, Decastro, Heyward, and Brown we still need alot more young playmakers who have proven themselves. I would have included worlds but we don’t know if he will be back.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Probably because we ran the no huddle all the time. Hopefully Haley and tomlin will be smart and let Ben run it again next year.

  • Shea Fahr

Andy Reid is a scumbag….See you all in the offseason.

  • Berlusconi

If the time of Da Beard really has come to an end, he can be proud of himself and the team today.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

He has the right to rest his starters unfortunately though. It shouldnt have come down to us needing backups to win if we would have just beaten one of the bad teams we lost to.

  • steeltown

    true, they blew the whistle

  • Jones

    >”What young playmakers?”
    > Proceeds to list four of them

In any event, it’s a better situation than lat year when we were heading into the off-season.

  • Dan

I just did the math, no matter how DAL-PHL turns out we’ll still be ahead of them so, we have the same record and the same draft position as last year 8-8 and 15th. (CHI has a worse SOS so their ahead of us).

  • steeltown

Say it aint so, sign him to a 1yr vet deal, even if its just depth, especially if Hood walks via FA

  • Game_Time

    Thanks Ryan Fuccop

  • Berlusconi

What about the Miami game with the Miami coach being on the field? Give us the penalty there and we get 3 points in addition. It’s never too late, Mr. Goodell

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Im saying we need more then those four. Obviously those four weren’t enough for us this year.

  • mlc43

Time to look toward the draft, lol. I’m not on the bandwagon with a 1st round receiver. We are picking in a good enough spot to probably land a top CB, which is what I would like to see. If we did draft offense, I like TE.

  • CW

Can’t believe how close the Steelers came to the playoffs after that terrible injury filled September. Next year they’ll get there. Add some more play makers on offense and defensive in the draft and keep developing the talent on the team and the Steelers will be fine as long as they don’t do anything crazy.

Speaking of crazy, the Browns are supposed to be firing their coaching staff yet again. At least that’s a comforting thought for the offseason, sounds like the same old Browns are still in Cleveland.

  • Shea Fahr

I understand your point but I still think you go into the playoffs on a winning streak…even if it is 1-0…The Chiefs are going nowhere.

  • Dan

Could this be more heartbreaking? Hard to complain about missing the playoffs when your 8-8. It’s not that we deserve to be in, but still… Two weeks ago, 16 things had to happen. Through this afternoon 15 of them happened, and in the final seconds in SD, it looked almost certain the miracle would happen, but then…wide right. Ugh.

  • DrakePirate

Maybe that is it … I would love to hear others chime in … how the heck has the OL played so much better not just pass protecting but heck rushing as well … when every week someone is injured and they move positions

not just that … i really wasn’t a fan of haley at all, but lately our OFFENSE has been pretty good .. if we add a couple more chess pieces from the draft we are sitting mighty pretty …

Many people state that our DEFENSE needs a major OVERHAUL … i completely disagree … i’ll let the facts back up my point of view .. Less than half our games did we allow our opponent to score more than 21 points … in this pass happy league that aint half bad, while i do agree we need to add a few more playmakers and tweak a few things … an entire overhaul is greatly exaggerated … we are not in that bad of position … two decent drafts, a smart FA pick up or 2 , and some good cap engineering and we are right back at the top again !!!!

  • mlc43

I thought we were 17 last year. My mind might be going.

  • Douglas Andrews

Almost doesn’t count unless it’s horseshoes or hand grenades. KC was up in the 4th I was real giddy only to almost fall flat on the floor after that R Succup wide right… Oh well Good Season for my Steelers! 8-4 after 0-4 start just not good enough but damn impressive.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

I don’t see no Shermans or Revises in this draft.

  • mlc43

    Darqueze Dennard looks pretty good.

  • Berlusconi

    Absolutely

  • DrakePirate

we weren’t even close to 15th last year

  • DrakePirate

u are right we were 17th or 18th

  • RJ

Exactly. The key thing about the playoffs is that you want to go in them with momentum. The Chiefs are 2-5 in the past games after their 9-0 start. Plus resting your starters has proven to be an outdated and ill-fated strategy. They are going against the team with the hot hand, in Indy, and I predict they will be beat pretty soundly next week.

  • steeltown

    Well stated

  • Berlusconi

Honestly, the Chiefs weren’t going anywhere no matter what would have happend this game

  • Dan

5 of our 8 losses were by a score or less. Each of those games had at least a few plays that had they gone differently would have given us a W. All in all, we were an 8-8 team and deserve that record, but we were playing better near the end than in the beginning, and we’ve been playing better recently than some playoff teams. But if September didn’t mean anything, they wouldn’t schedule the games then. Oh well.

  • David Edward

I was impressed that the KC second-stringers even gave the Steelers a chance to make the playoffs. I thought SD would have a field day against the backups, but that wasn’t the case. It came down to the Succop miss and the questionable forward progress/fumble on the fake punt. I have no problem with Andy Reid’s decision to sit the starters. You always have to do what’s in the best interest of your football team, and in this case, the backups showed that they can really play some ball. I wish them luck vs. the Colts as I do the Chargers vs. the Bengals. If nothing else, it was good to see that the Ravens came up small when they needed to be big.

  • dgh57

KC will be 1 and out!

1st half of the season they played 1 playoff team in the Eagles and beat them when Eagles weren’t playing good. 2nd half they go 3-5 because they finally have to play some playoff teams.

  • 2443scott

only responce will be a hand over their mouth to hide there smile and another snicker behind that we are not done with you steeers yet ….then a none call on the call with some type gibberish on reason a whistle was blown on goodship lollypop that all the refs heard …its just another season with bad calls and good calls and inept nfl play calls….

  • steeltown

…also the OL, somehow between Beachum, Velasco, Whimper and Wallace they gelled as a unit, somehow….. really its our OGs that deserve credit Foster and DeCastro have played really well, especially having to make adjustments for the carousel of players around them.. I’d also like to thank Beachum, whata player he is

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

The only bright spot besides how our team looks alot better than the beginning of the season is ravens s8tting at home too

  • Douglas Andrews

At least the Ravens can’t go either!

  • DrakePirate

you are thinking all wrong … CB’s are terrible odds .. unless you are the top guy with nearly no flaws … TE is a good odds pick as well as a big WR like KB … my best case scenario is that we trade back 7 or 8 spots pick up Benjamin or Amaro/Ebron and pick up an extra 3rd rounder to add to our Def ,… thats best case scenario … there is nothing worth picking at 15th that I see … Pats would do exactly what i am saying as they are much smarter than we are in the drafts with trading up and down …. i don’t see any can’t miss CB’s … let me know if u do ? as well the top Safeties seem to be lacking as well … i say either TE or Big WR … safest surest bet fro 1st rnd

  • Berlusconi

And may the Bengals lose in a fashion that brings shame over their organization and fanbase

  • Douglas Andrews

    Would make my New Year

  • DrakePirate

Agreeed ! those can be gambled upon in later rounds … i like Big WR aka Benjamin or TE in 1st end

  • WilliamSekinger

Losing to the Chargers at home would do it

  • 2443scott

8-8 season came down to 8 seconds …..

  • ScottB

Yeah to come this close and not get in is verrrrrrrrry tough. A few weeks ago I wouldn’t even consider it. Then today everything is falling into place then……succop happened.

  • RJ

That is definitely a positive, in an otherwise miserable day. Playoffs have basically come down to cheering for teams I hate to lose. As long as the 49ers, Saints, or Patriots don’t win the SB. I’ll be happy. Might as well throw Seattle on that list as well.

  • TheBlitz

Backups did not lose the game. Succup did. Regardless of who played he was still going to kick and miss.

  • mlc43

I agree to an extent. I usually like mid rd CBs, because they are harder to predict. However, we have to improve in that areas somehow and we aren’t going to do it in FA. Did you read the article about Ike going to FS and Allen and Gay starting at corners? That’s a terrifying thought. So, I’ll go against my ordinary way of thinking and say draft the best CB out there. I like the TE idea though. I’m a big fan of Amaro.

I don’t fall in the “gotta have a tall WR” camp. I don’t care how tall he is if he hauls if he produces like AB. Big athletic TEs cause some difficult match ups too.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Troy, Clark, and Keisel are probably going to be gone. And if i had it my way we lose Woodley and keep Worlds.

  • costanza2k1

Season summarized from fan’s perspective: FIRE EVERYONE!

  • mlc43

Losing Woodley isn’t going to happen….unless the FO decides it wants to eat a big ole plate of crap.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

If there was a clear cut Shutdown Corner then id be all for but we need to get Ben some weapons.

  • Jones

Bell missed time this year. This was effectively DeCastro’s first season after his injury last year. These guys are only getting better. I’ll put it to you this way, had we made the playoffs, there’s nobody the NFL that would in a hurry to line up against our offense right now.

  • Douglas Andrews

Yeah there gonna need both Woodley and Worilds

  • mlc43

I hope that was a joke. Good one.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Unfortunately trading back requires a team that’s willing to trade with us.

  • mlc43

screw needing woodley….he’s just too expensive to get rid of, lol.

  • reese

Even the jets won. Just when I thought everything was falling into place…heart wrenching

  • TheBlitz

Why is everyone blaming KC for benching their starters when the real culprit here is succup. He missed a winnable FG after a bunch of backups traveled the entire length of the field with an easy (I can’t believe I said that) to win the game

  • Curtis

Keep Valesco at center, Pouncy already said that he would move to left guard if it would help team. DeCastro at right guard. Kelvin Beachum left tackle and let Adams, Gilbert, Wallace fight it out for that right tackle.
    Just my thoughts

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

    I hate these cap rules.

  • Douglas Andrews

Even if you could afford to get rid of Woodley are you going to trot out C Carter and Sly for depth?

  • mlc43

I’d take my chances if it meant being able to dump his salary free and clear.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

We need a big athletic target who can cause miss matches PERIOD especially in the Redzone. If we had somebody like that to pair with Brown wed be unstopable. I dont care what position TE or WR

  • Jones

If you’re going to keep bringing him up, spell it right: Worilds.

  • DrakePirate

ya i think the system has finally been bought into and the OL has gelled like u have said … amazing what they have been able to accomplish with the musical chairs of OL … great job !!! I think going forward Bell would have put up similar numbers to the last couple weeks every week here on out which is a long way from where we were the last couple years

ohhhh … wanted to point out, i don’t know exactly what it was, but i have to say that the most improved player award (or maybe just attitude) has to go to DWYER … LOVE what he has done and become this season … maybe UNEMPLOYMENT will do that to a person … but he has become much more valuable in much less playing time this season … very much looking forward to him for seasons to come

DAVE !!!! from all of us in Steeler land, I think you owe Mr. DWYER an apology … from all of us who had seen his potential !!!

  • Douglas Andrews

Were stuck with him at least for another year. Those draft misses at OLB really hurt.

  • costanza2k1

Pretty much what you read from 80% of fans these days, coaches, players and owners…I find it commical

  • mlc43

    agreed

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

I really HOPE Jarvis pans out.

  • Veronica Rimel

I do not think the NFL should allow teams to rest players when the outcome of the game determines other teams qualifying for a playoff spot. Injured is one thing but resting is unfair.

We fell a bit short this year but we will be back! We played great the second half of the season!!

  • cp72

    Mike Evans or Travis Benjamin….

  • Nolrog

They are going to have to eat that plate of crap at some point . . . . no time like the present.

  • Curtis

He was moving forward, side judge came in to spot the ball and when he kept moving side judge moved with him. Thing is when he was moving forward he was clearly stripped. Andy R. should of called timeout so that there was some type of review. Booth can only challenge in overtime which sucks.

  • costanza2k1

All in all this season ended great, offense was clicking. Media lost as they never got the ‘tension fight’ with Haley and Ben. Defense got better with time. Need a NT and we’re off and ready. 6-2 to finish the season, 4-2 in our division. Not bad at all after 0-4

  • Douglas Andrews

He’s a playmaker just needs to bulk up plus this year of experience will help him next yr.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Ya but they would have loved to play against our defense.

  • TheBlitz

Why ? Listen those backups didn’t get destroyed by SD. In fact they may have played harder than if the starters were to play. SD didn’t play harder or better than KC. Succup handed them a life line.

  • ScottB

Wish there was a way for the fans to properly thank 99.

  • DrakePirate

I also don’t care about a tall WR … but I really like Benjamin … its almost like having another TE .. and it really helps our REDZONE … I agree we need to improve on the SECONDARY … but don’t want to reach .. i want a sure thing and i think the 2 TE’s and Benjamin are sure things … I will take a look at Ha HA Dix … wouldn’t be opposed at having a good Safety as our top choice ..

Under NOOOOO circumstances do I want GAY at starting CB …. Nor do i want IKE starting more than 1 more year ….. ALLEN is a STUD and I think almost everybody on this FORUM is underestimating his abilities and play …. the guy is MONEY and the best CB we have had since WOODSON … that, i can almost guarantee will be seen !!!

  • CrazyTerry

My thoughts after an infuriating game:
    Succop , you are a f***up.
If you are going to rule forward progress on the fake punt, ti should have been when SD got stopped short of the first down on that same fake. But then once they allowd them to keep pushing, YOU SELECTIVELY DETERMINE how much forward progress was there? THERE WAS NO ATTEMPT TO EVEN SPOT THE BALL accurately. Somehow, they knew where to spot the ball so instantly? The fumble happened so freaking fast there was no way the ref ruled forward progress the instant before the fumble happened.
then there was the illegal contact call instead of PI that would have placed the ball at the 12 yard line for the Chiefs red zone. Instead of calling PI(the ball was catchable, but there was contact AFTER The pass was thrown , so it is irrelevant if there was prior contact too on that same play). I like Chiefs chances of scoring with that kind of momentum.

It’s like Bill Leavy is on a mission to appease the Seattle fans and punish the Steelers.

As far as Andy Reid, he had every right ot sit the dinged up starters though I felt he went way too far. Still, what made me mad was his continued calls of the run plays once SD started stuffing 6 or 7 in a row late in the game and then he caps it up with a terrible reverse in OT. Chase looked great. Once they got to the 21 yard line in regulatin, let Chase complete one pass to make it a chip shot FG. SD was selling out for the run.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

They better not pick a NT in the first.

  • r4kolb

Here is why some say the D needs a major overhaul. When you make QB’s like Cassel, Pryor, Locker, Flynn, look like Pro Bowlers. When you give up 55 points to the Patriots even with Brady. When you allow the Dolphins to come from Florida and score 34 points in the snow in your house. Add that to the age of Keisel, Ike, Troy, Clark. It may be a sign you need to look at your D.

  • costanza2k1

they should just get the best available player and let it rip

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Why thank you now i can copy and paste instead of looking it up.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

    I agree with that.

  • Ahmad

The fake punt not being reviewed by the booth was inexplicable! Just downright disgusting!

  • Curtis

Isn’t Mike Evans only a sophomore this year? Travis Benjamin the browns receiver?

  • DrakePirate

Not Bad …. lets see our Cody Wallace grades out … maybe let them fight it out ….at C .. plus Good Centers can be picked up in 2nd rnd if pouncey proves to be a good LG option .. we need good OL plus depth .. I definitely think we have the depth now … maybe we just need one more KEY piece !!

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

    You mean Kelvin Benjamin.

  • CrazyTerry

it was a stupid playcall by a team that needed a tie and not necessarily a win in OT and the refs bailed them out.

  • Eric Crook

Shame that officiating caused the outcome of a game, but Sucop shoul have made that FG and the Steelers should be playing Cincy!!! Shoulda, couldsa, woulda……dug the hole and thats what happens…still proud they fought back to that spot tho….

  • Curtis

Or toe out of bounds running down the sideline against Miami.

  • TheBlitz

Sorry but that’s not a very good argument.

  • DrakePirate

WRooooooNGGGG !!!! those weren’t player issues as much as defensive scheme issues … i put the onus on those games on Dick … because our great defensive games this year which we have had many !!!! shows that we still have a good enough defense … I agree we need to IMPROVE but a lot of that is on our coaches …

You have to ask yourself … how come we didn’t attack NE like we did a few yrs ago when we wooded their ass … we had a totally different scheme this year and lets not forget the game was pretty close late in the 3rd qtr … their was definitely a lapse there in some form.

  • Brian Tollini

Why Troy? He will be back

  • CrazyTerry

I felt the AB misstep in the Miami game was symbolic of our season and today was just like that final play in the mIami loss. For Steelers to score that final TD , a lot of unlikely things had to go perfect and they did capped off by a gtreat juke by AB on a Miami adefender and then he steps out of bounds on a surefire wide open lane for a TD.
Today, so many things went right all the way into the final seconds of the SD game, and then the kicker is a f***up. But then, KC gets to win off a fumble in OT and the refs screw us. And then KC gets robbed of a PI call despite contact continuining after the ball was thrown on a catchable pass and the refs inexplicably go with the illegal contact option that spots the ball 30 yards away.
So damn close, it hurts. That Miami loss captured everything that hurt this season – a lame steelers home crowd that had so many no shows, false hope at the end, and now this final day where Heinz Field again had many empty seats and everything goes right until the final seconds.

  • r4kolb

Seriously guys! We were 8-8. Take a look at our schedule and tell me how we should be 8-8? Seriously go look at it. Look at the records of the teams we lost to. The absolute worse we should have been was 12-4. We didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs. Like the Great Mike the Mouth Tomlin said “We made our Bed now we have to fight to get out of it.” Well Mike too many times this year you obviously didn’t have your team prepared and they stayed in bed!

  • DrakePirate

i do not like EvanS one bit …. way overated !!!!

  • DrakePirate

i don’t know about that …. our Defense played a damn good game … and have shown a lot more spunk lately … they are avg at least and getting better !!

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

They will probably want him to take a pay cut and he will probably refuse. unless someone else along with Ike takes a pay cut to keep him. They are going to want to keep Worilds.

  • DrakePirate

    True !

  • Veronica Rimel

That’s your opinion. Those guys are paid professionals and if starters should have to play unless hurt. People paying to go to the game are not paying to see back ups play.

  • DrakePirate

not worth a 15th by any stretch of the imagination !!!

  • TheBlitz

But they picking higher don’t they ? I don’t know but I don’t find any consolation in Baltimore missing the PO if they gonna pick higher than the Steelers who also happen to miss the PO

  • DrakePirate

WELL SAID …. if there was even one sure thing Safety/CB i would not argue … last year you had REID and Rhodes … those are guys worth a 1st round this year mehhh

  • DrakePirate

thats actually pretty easy to do … steelers are just not good at wheeling and dealing at ALL !!!!

  • DrakePirate

Actually we do deserve to be in … more than SD at least … but ya we made our bed so we deserve the hand dealt

  • r4kolb

Yep your right….overnight Dick LeBeau suddenly forgot how to scheme. Wow.

  • DrakePirate

TRoy will be back … guaranteed … at almost half price … 5 mil tops more like 4 mil … damn that Pro Bowl cost us prob a million

  • DrakePirate

ohhh ur one of those …..

  • Mike Sweeney

    double indeed

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

You know I’ve been thinking the Packers didn’t have Rodgers for pretty much most of the year the finish with the same amount of wins as us and they still make the playoffs. They seem to have all the luck.

  • Mike Sweeney

    &%$$#@& *&@!@ ^%#%&&**(

  • TheBlitz

Succop is a starter you know ?

  • Brian Tollini

The Chiefs played well enough all season to be in position to do whatever they please for week 17. If the Steelers were in this position would you be upset if our starters got the day off? It is our fault we had to rely on another team to win. We lost to Pryor and the Raiders.

  • DrakePirate

Troy won’t refuse … he will take pretty much any offer given to end his career a steeler … u are underestimating the value that has … and thats the type of guy he is … !

  • StrengthOfVictory

What sucks most is I was figuring the Chiefs game would be a near blowout in favor of San Diego. Yeah, Miami and Baltimore lost, but I thought to myself, “Eh, doesn’t matter. The second-string Chiefs don’t stand a chance.”

Then they gave me HOPE!! GAH!! I had to watch the missed Succop kick with HOPE that we would actually MAKE it! Why did you have to give HOPE?!

  • Veronica Rimel

Nothing went our way this year. Take a look at all of the bad calls that went against us and the injuries. I think there should be two divisions, NFC and AFC and the six teams with the best records in each make the playoffs. It isn’t fair to a team with a better record not to make the playoffs because they play in a division with better teams than the others.

  • Curtis

    totally agree

  • DrakePirate

We lost to the RAIDERS .. yet again …. nuff said !!!!!

  • TheBlitz

Sorry still not a valid point.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Not alot of players in the last few years have taken paycuts to remain steelers just ask Good ole James Harrison.

  • Mike Sweeney

2-5 last 7 is pretty good, going into playoffs. chargers were showing toughness, almost going 5 quarters to beat no names. what a joke. outstanding playoff teams

  • Veronica Rimel

After an 0-4 stat our guys never gave up nor did the coaching staff. We could of given up on the season and played back ups to see how well they played or sit back and lose games to get a higher draft pick. They play to win and I don’t see how any coach can concede a game by sitting players. That’s Andy Reid’s coaching and explains why he couldn’t win in Philly even when he had good teams.

  • Curtis

First 4-6 losses came off turnovers. Pick 6′s and fumble returns for TD, ect. When Ben and Haley got on the same page well we won 6 of our last 8 and Ben looked probably his best not to mention he played all year without missing a snap other than the wildcat. Most people penciled us at only 4-6 wins. Haven’t finished with a losing season under Tomlin yet, and if someone were to say that the last 2 years we would be rebuilding and go 8-8 each of those years I would say that’s a positive. Most teams have losing seasons when rebuilding.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

We rested our starters when coach cowher had a 15-1 record in 2004. Any coach that has nothing to gain has the right to rest there starters.

  • CrazyTerry

Pereira tweeted that the fake punt call by Leavy was incorrect.

  • TheBlitz

I hope you realize KC is in the PO and has the right to rest their guys for next week.

I don’t know why you assume starters would have played harder than the backups today.

By the way Succop isn’t the backup kicker.

  • Curtis

That’s the 1 I didn’t understand if there was 2 interference flags why didn’t KC get the choice of what penalty to take, better yet if a play is moving forward why is it being called dead forward progress stopped and at the same time allowing the play to go forward, but not allowing the strip.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

    hopefully they forfeit the chargers.

  • Veronica Rimel

But the decision to do that did not affect the playoffs. The game was meaningless. I know they have the right to do it, I just don’t think that it should be allowed because some teams play for a playoff berth the last week.

  • TheBlitz

    Sorry not going to happen.

  • Rick M

So the referees screwed the Steelers out of the playoffs with the ‘San Diego no fumble’ call…AND the league will still likely take away a Steelers’ draft choice or move one of our draft choices back.

It’s about time ownership/management stands up to the league and says enough – ‘you punished our head coach with a $100,000 fine and then fined Miami only $10,000 for a similar infraction. And then you didn’t even review a fumble in the San Diego-Kansas City game that would have put our team in the playoffs. You’re NOT going to continue singling out the Steelers by changing our draft choices in any way.’

If the Steelers’ ownership/management remains silent on this additional penalty and they simply allow it to happen, they’re a total embarrassment.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Hope those refs get fired especially leavy i bet he did that on purpose to screw us over.

  • Veronica Rimel

Yes I know they are in. I know they have the right to do that but I don’t think it is right if the players aren’t hurt. Every year teams do it and it affects other teams making the playoffs. Controlling your own destiny doesn’t always happen. With the way SD played, there is no way they would of beat KC starters. From the stats of the kicker, he should be a back up.

  • CrazyTerry

In addition to the fake punt blunder and the illegal contact instead of PI on the final well executed KC offensive play of the game, it looks like the refs and the replaybooth messed up by not calling SD on an overloading penalty to oine side of the formation. Not sure about how that rule works, but google it. It is supposedly a reviewable play. If that’s true, then considering very unlikely for Succup to miss two FGs ina row from 40 or less, that is a ridiculous oversight.

  • TheBlitz

That’s exactly how I felt. I actually didn’t get sucked in until those final minutes when they had to drive down the field for the winning FG. All afternoon I kept my emotions in check until those awful 8 seconds sitting on the edge of my chair with my legs going left right trying to keep my composure.

UGH! I wish KC lost by 10 or more. I would have had a much better day.

  • CrazyTerry

I wonder if Leavy feels like Bell did not fumble last week as he was stopped by “forward progress’

  • CrazyTerry

Sorry if I wasn’t clear enough. There was only one flag. It is my personal opinion that there was PI in addition to illegal contact and that PI should take precedence when the refs throws the flag.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Leavy was the head ref of the 2005 superbowl so obviously he feels compelled to screw us over for it.

  • CrazyTerry

The sad thing is Seattle keeps whining about it despite that game not being this close. They still lost by 11 points and noen of the calls in that game were as bad as this call. Those were mere ticky tacky calls

  • r4kolb

Who were these people saying we were rebuilding? In reality doesn’t every team rebuild every year? You know a mix of veterans and younger players you have developed through the draft. How the losses came is a moot point. They came none the less. All I said is man up! At 8-8 with the teams we had on our schedule we didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs. I don’t want to hear the crying over the Chiefs not playing their starters because they EARNED the right to do that.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Ill just dream about it then.

  • r4kolb

Thank you DrakePirate, it’s good to see there are some who can be impartial in their judgment of this team.

  • r4kolb

One of those? A realist? Yep that’s me. I’m just saying the players play a part in the schemes you can use. Plus not having Cam in until later in the season hurt the D line. Pressure on the QB and stopping the run up the middle hurt the first part of the season and in many games to be honest.

  • alex

second week in a row that a punt or kick is not reviewable that hurts us!?

do special teams plays not matter to the NFL?

  • r4kolb

This just in Goodell has taken away the Steelers first round pick for the Tomlin sideline blunder #Ian Rapoport

  • Matt

It’s not Scuccop’s fault or the refs fault that the Steelers aren’t in the playoffs. They had many winnable games in which they couldn’t pull it out. Just that kind of year.

  • r4kolb

Kirby man up. Only Brady fans cry!

  • Curtis

I agree that we shouldn’t cry over spilled milk we did it to ourselves losing the games we did 8-8 should never get you into the playoffs. But when a team replaces as much as we did the last couple and the year to come and all these players we starters or contributors were rebuilding.

  • Kyle May

It’s a shame that I had to spend the day cheering for the Bengals, the Jets and the Chiefs… Just like all season, the Steelers did just enough to not make it… Losses to Minnesota, Oakland, Tennessee, Chicago, Miami, etc… the only thing this team has consistently been is inconsistent! Not only do they not make the playoffs, they did just enough to be middle of the pack in the draft picks… I don’t know what is more frustrating 8-8 or just outright sucking at 4-12 or 3-13? This team has been notorious of late for just giving fans enough hope only to have it destroyed before our very eyes… they have no one to blame but themselves…

  • Curtis

Ur good I thought it was 2 flags because flag I thought was thrown where PI was on the 12yrd line, but instead the replay shows that the tight-end was getting mugged and also the interference down field.

  • Shea Fahr

Yes and Thanks for reminding me.

  • Jeff Johnson

If they beat the phins, they would have been in. Just that one loss cost them

  • Rick M

It doesn’t excuse in any way one absolutely definite error (not calling a penalty when 8 men lined up to one side on the field goal) and the non-fumble call on the fake punt.

Not sure how anyone can just ‘accept’ that level of ineptitude by the officials when it costs another NFL team a playoff spot – whether that team is the Steelers or not. I gather you have no problem accepting it however.

  • TheBlitz

Sorry for sarcasm but I think those backups did a remarkable job. Succop just didn’t finish the game for them. They would have went in the PO on a winning streak

  • Rick M

Wonder if the league will have the balls to admit that a penalty should have been called on San Diego on Succop’s 41-year miss? I can’t see how they can avoid addressing the matter now that Pereira and the media are talking about it.

Also wonder if the league will state that there will be no further punishment to the Steelers for Tomlin’s infraction, given Baltimore’s elimination (and the missed San Diego penalty call).

  • Michael Pearce

No whistle was blown and they also could have reviewed the spot, which was short of the first down.

  • Tom

When you lose to the Vikings and Raiders, you don’t deserve to go to the playoffs.

  • HiVul

Backups did lose the game, if the starters were playing they probably wouldn’t have needed a game winning field goal at the end.

  • HiVul

I know that this won’t happen, but I’m ready to see us go in a different direction at head coach.

I’ve been on the fence for a while now, but I’ve finally had to admit to myself that if Tomlin is finding a way to screw up clock management as often as he has, he’s probably making a slew of other mistakes that I’m not even aware of. When he says that he isn’t a ‘probabilities guy,’ I suspect that he simply doesn’t have an idea of what the probabilities are. He doesn’t strike me as one of the more intelligent coaches. I don’t buy that he understands what would be ideal and chooses not to do it because of his gut.

I don’t want his mishaps to cost us a close game when it matters. I’m not clear on how much input Tomlin has on draft day, but I don’t entirely trust him there either.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Tomlin is an atrocious coach and if we kept him for 10 more years we’d probably make the playoffs at least half the time. But I don’t see him as an elite caliber head coach, I think we could get better at that position so to speak.

  • 2winz

They seriously need to begin fining the refs. All you’re going to get is an apology.. but that doesn’t help the teams involved. I understand refs make mistakes.. but sometimes players make mistakes as well such as unintentional helmet to helmet contact. Yet they can’t get away with just apologizing even if the helmet to helmet was a bang bang play. They end up getting fined. Do the same for the refs

  • Richard Edlin

Or the width of Brown’s shoe, or a million other things. We didn’t deserve it but it would have been nice …

  • Matt

I don’t “accept” the ineptitude by officials. However, I do accept that a team has no one to blame but themselves for starting 0-4, ending at 8-8, and relying on three other teams to lose to make the playoffs.

  • DrakePirate

All Im saying is we had much more good defensive games than bad ones … the NE fiasco I do believe was caused by the way we attacked them … I think they should have had the same strategy they did a few yrs ago when they pressed and used Tez on Gronk …. Im confused to why they changed their tactics when it worked so well the first time !

  • TheDon Corleone

Typical Steelers fans. Hating on Succop and the Chiefs

Bunch of inbred maggots.. Lets not forget they got a raper QB

  • TheDon Corleone

The puke stained Steelers got just what they deserved and I for one am laughing my azz off right now at all the inbred maggots crying about a missed call.

  • TheDon Corleone

Steelers fans are inbred trash. They got just what they deserved.

  • Dan

Well I think we’d have done better against Cincy than SD will, but I’m not sure how far we’d get after a visit to Denver or NE. But SD won 9 games (well 8 plus the KC deal) and we won 8, so that’s that.

  • Dan

I’m on the fence on this issue as well. I took part in a little Tomlin bashing during our 0-4 start, but realistically he does some things well and other things not so well. The things he doesn’t do well, e.g. clock management and some tactical things, are teachable. But would he admit he needs to improve and is anybody above him willing to ensure he gets taught? Is the coach, coachable? The next year or two should tell. As obvious as this sounds, I would only want him replaced, if he’s replaced with somebody better.

  • Dan

I was just about to counter this comment with a “yeah but we also beat…”, but then I looked up the list. Nevermind.

  • Dan

I would think they will, but hard to say at this point. I think the bigger blown call is the fumble recovery on the fake punt. In no way was forward progress stopped and he certainly wasn’t down. The only possible reason to say there was no fumble, was if they were stopping the play due to the guy’s helmut coming off.
It would be insane if the league adds any additional punishment for Tomlin’s being on the field. I’ve been seeing coaches on the field every week since. Not saying it won’t happen, just that it would be insane.

  • Dan

    Agree.

  • Dan

You’re right, my bad. We did pick 17th last year. Not sure if you’re mind is going or not. May be a separate issue.

  • DrakePirate

true … i’ll take the 15th pick … if we were in, i think we would have beat Cincy and then lost down the line and ended up with a damn mid 20′s pick …. 15th much better for the future … but couldn’t say that last night …. damn that hurt … ouch !!

  • Hades_Hound666

As a Charger fan all I can say is WAAHAAAHAHHAHAAA. Hey Steeler fans, break out your crying towels and wipe those tears.

  • dgh57

Well your Chiefs will be getting what they deserve when it finally dawns on them that they can’t beat a playoff team!

By the way, the Steelers didn’t take care of their own business so they have only themselves to blame, so I’m not crying about any missed calls only responding to someone.

  • TheDon Corleone

Go cry in the bathroom brah. Wipe that sore butt too while you’re in there.

  • dgh57

“Go cry in the bathroom brah. Wipe that sore butt too while you’re in there.”

No, it’s you that needs to do so because you’re the one with a game still to play! Just like I said the Steelers made their bed now they can lie in it, so I’m not shedding any tears! Just make sure you have a month old dried out used corn cob to wipe with because you’ll be wishing for sure that your team would of signed Peyton Manning a few years back as the Chiefs aren’t going anywhere without a good QB!!

  • TheDon Corleone

At least we are still playing football.

    You mad brah?

  • dgh57

I at least get a nice consolation prize in the 15th pick in the draft which I’m confident will turn out to be a solid player.

No, not mad just responding to what I felt was a mad person.

  • TheDon Corleone

Go wipe ur hurt butt elsewhere.

I have no more time to respond to morons
like you any more. I am planning a HUGE playoff
    party.

    You mad brah?

  • dgh57

GO LOOK IN A MIRROR YOU”LL SEE WHAT A MORON LOOKS LIKE!!!!!!! MORON!!!!

  • TheDon Corleone

Is your caps lock stuck brah?

Is your butt sore just a bit brah?

  • dgh57

As far as who needs to go elsewhere need I remind you that you’re on a Steelers blog site for, guess what, Steelers fans!

Enjoy your party because it most likely will be your last for some time. Unless of course you guys get a KO return for a TD or a pick 6 which is how most of your games are won. So in the end it’s your butt that’s going to be SORE!

  • TheDon Corleone

As far as who needs to go elsewhere need I remind you that you’re on a Steelers moron blog site for, guess what, moron Steelers fans!

    So true.

  • TheDon Corleone

Fortunately, the NFL season came to an end for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Even after a pathetic 20-7 win over the worthless Cleveland Browns, the Steelers needed help outside of their control.

And it appeared they were getting all the help they needed. The New York Jetsdefeated the Miami Dolphins, and the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Baltimore Ravens in early kickoffs. The planets were almost in alignment. Steelers fans everywhere were

    excited……

This meant the only shoe left to drop was for the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the San Diego Chargers on the road. It seemed like a tall task considering Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had chosen to bench nearly all of his starters. His strategy was to keep the bottom dwelling Steelers out of the playoffs.

The good news was no one bothered to tell the Chiefs’ backups they couldn’t win. The Chiefs came out with fresh legs and tons of intensity and were taking it to a Chargers team who had everything to play for.

However, as the game wound down the Chargers had pulled even with the Chiefs, 24-24 with only seconds to play. The Chiefs had milked the clock down and were setting up for kicker Ryan Succop to kick the game-winning 41-yard field goal.

Steelers fans held their breaths all at once…….

The kick had plenty of leg, but luckily stayed just barely wide right, forcing overtime. At the time, it was just a disappointing play that led to overtime. However, upon a second look, this kick had just made inbred Steelers fans fall to their knees and cry.

I say they got what they deserved.

  • TheDon Corleone

SD should be sitting home just on principle. To get outplayed by fucking 21 back-ups is ridiculous…And so wonderful at the same time!

  • TheDon Corleone

It was pretty sweet watching the Steelers get so close to the playoffs only to have it pulled away at the last minute. That was satisfying and the most obnoxious fan base in the NFL certainly had it coming

  • TheDon Corleone

I smile at the thought of that annoying Steelers fan on here sobbing in his bed…

  • TheDon Corleone

It’s such a laugh how steelers fans are looking at a play in another game as a way to defend their team’s decline (29th ranked RUSH Offense/22nd ranked RUSH Defense/salary cap issues/aging core players).
