Steelers CB Ike Taylor Hints That A Move To Safety In 2014 Is Possible

Following the Pittsburgh Steelers win over the Cleveland Browns in the 2013 regular season finale, cornerback Ike Taylor hinted during his post game talk with the media that there’s already been a little bit of talk about him moving to safety next season.

Taylor, who is scheduled to earn a base salary of $7 million in 2014, will more than likely be asked to take a pay cut of some sorts during the offseason in order to help the team out with the salary cap.

With it looking like veteran safety Ryan Clark will not be back next season, Taylor would likely be asked to play the free safety spot should he indeed return.

While it is still early, the Steelers would likely start the season with Cortez Allen and William Gay as their starting corners. If strong safety Troy Polamalu also returns, safety Shamarko Thomas might be asked to play the nickel corner role until a draft pick is ready to contribute.

We have plenty of time to discuss this over the course of the next few months and it should be noted that nothing is set in stone as of yet.

We need to draft a stud CB in the 1st or at least the 2nd round at the latest.

  • Madi

We need an early round CB regardless, but… I don’t like the idea of Ike at safety. He’s not the great open field tackler so many people seem to think he is. As for coverage, I have no idea if he could make the switch or not. Maybe. But I feel like switching Gay would make more sense, unless Ike’s wheels just fall completely off.

Gay would be a better safety than Ike in my opinion. Gay has better instincts, reads the qb better, and plays the run better than Ike.

Ike’s strength, has always been his ability to run with wr’s outside. He has slowed down a bit, but it is still the strength of his game

We need to draft a stud cb, thats for sure.. We have no depth or promising youngsters. Our future SS, took all of the nickel or dime cb snaps this year..

At FS, we have options.. Will Allen, Will Gay, Robert Golden. Or if Troy leaves, we can bring Clark back, to pair with Shamarko at ss

  • J. Hernandez

Now only if Ike had hands….*sigh*

    My plan:

Cut Troy. Use that money to sign Jarius Byrd as a pro bowl free agent. FS is solved for years to come.

Draft a CB in round 1 or 2. Extend Cortez Allen. Keep Gay as a back up. CB is solved for years to come.

Start Shamarko at SS. Draft another middle round developmental S.

Cut Ike or re-structure him at a reduced salary. Let him finish his career as our #3 CB and #2 FS (dime DB) while we develop our younger players.

  • Jarod Wells

Cut Troy? He will have dead money for the year if we do that man. We might as well use him for another year to let whomever his replacement be groomed. Not all safeties will thrive in this D. Troy went to another pro bowl this year, and him and Shark could be great tandem.

  • Jollyrob68

Jarius Byrd would be nice. If Troy takes a pay reduction the two of them plus Shamarko at Nb,. Draft Tre Boston with comp pick rd 3.

  • Shannon Stephenson

I think Golden can play a nickle corner as well

  • Andrew Grigsby

I would leave Ike at corner, C.Allen opposite him. Move Will Gay to safety. I;m really 50-50 on resigning Troy, Clark is gone either way. Either start S.Thomas or Robert Golden at the other safety spot if Troy gets let go. I really like Ok St CB Justin Gilbert in the draft would love to see him in the burgh. Plus he’s a sweet KR.

whatever happens, it will be great

Realisticly Ike moving to Safety isn’t such a bad idea. He still has tremendous speed, and his inability to catch ints can be attributed quite a bit to him having his eyes on the receiver until the last second. Imagine Ike with his speed at safety and his eyes on the QB (and the ball) the entire play.

  • Richard Edlin

Given that Ike can’t catch … NO!

“We have plenty of time to discuss this over the course of the next few months and it should be noted that nothing is cast in stone.”

Except, of course, for Ike’s hands.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

    1) His dead money is only $2 million. We save $8+ million.

    2) Shamarko plays the same position as Troy (SS). He was drafted to replace Troy, not play in tandem.

    3) Jarius Byrd is the top FS in the NFL at intercepting the ball. That works well in any defense.

    4) I’m not saying Troy sucks. I’m saying he will be 33 years old next year. We cannot keep paying old guys $8 million/year and “hoping” they stay healthy and fast.

If two of the top three picks were CBs I wouldn’t mind.

  • srdan

    Great plan.

Just all of it hinges on signing one of the biggest names to hit teh FA market for a team that never does that. On top of that we have no money to spend it on homegrown talent, which is usually the route we take.

Troys stats and impact were bigger than Byrds this year. Why would you want to give him troys money?

Keep troy, and curb the byrd talk and I really like your plan.

  • srdan

Maybe this was the longterm plan when Keenan wasn’t offered a contract. LOL

  • Pete Wallace

Goddell ruined Ryan Clark’s game. Fined and singled out every game for legal hits. No wonder he lost his mojo. Who could be their best when the Zebra’s have it out for them?

  • Brendon Glad

I like ike, but hes out of his mind if he thinks he can play safety. It’s damaging enough when your CB cant catch a ball if his life depended pn it. But a safety? That would be completely insane.
