Steelers Sign Seven Practice Squad Players To Futures Contracts

The 2013 season for the Pittsburgh Steelers is now over and on Tuesday, the team announced that seven of the eight players that ended the season on their practice squad have been signed to futures contracts.

Those seven players are: running back Alvester Alexander, wide receiver Justin Brown, guard/tackle Bryant Browning, guard Chris Hubbard, wide receiver Kashif Moore, safety Ross Ventrone and linebacker Kion Wilson.

Moore, Wilson and Ventrone all signed futures contracts last offseason. Brown was drafted by the Steelers in 2013, while Hubbard was signed as an undrafted free agent. Alexander was signed during training camp, while Browning was added at the end of the regular season.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Callentown

What ever happened to last year draft pick DB Hawthorn??

  • SteelersDepot

Currently looking for work and has been for a Long time

  • steeltown

    currently a Free Agent

  • steeltown

Nice to have Kion Wilson and Ross Ventrone back to compete this offseason same with Chris Hubbard.. don’t know much about Bryant Browning except that he is supposedly an intelligent kid

Lets just say for the sake of argument that Sanders walks via FA, we re-sign Cotchery and we draft another WR.. I suspect there will still be a good training camp and preseason battle between Moye and J.Brown for the #5 spot

  • Shea Fahr

I would imagine there will be a substantial number of LBs both inside and outside brought in and signed to futures contracts. Probably some more secondary folks as well. Perhaps they will give Van Dyke one final shot at a camp too.

  • cencalsteeler

Glad to see the Justin Brown signing. 6’3″ and nice hands. I think this kid has a bright future with the Steelers.

  • Callentown

    Thx Dave.

So, would you agree with this assessment of the 2013 draft picks:

1 – Jones [Solid start, something to build on right side]
2 – Bell [Best pick so far]
3 – Sharko [big hitter, next year's safety replacing Clark]
    4 – Landry Jones [Huh???]
    5 – Hawthorne [Miss]
6 – Justin Brown [too soon to tell]
7 – V. Williams [solid start but not in pass coverage]
7 – N. Williams [hurt too soon to tell]

Overall, the best draft in years even with the questionable QB pick and one clear miss.

  • cencalsteeler

There is no immediate impact with the signing of Landry Jones, but it was a good draft choice and pick. They needed to bolster the back up qb situation and they did so admirably.

  • DrakePirate

How was our scouting dept off on that pick by soooo much … ??? we could have used a good 5th Rnd pick, still were lots of good players left.

Not overly thrilled with our Practise Squad players … I like Brown but don’t see any others having any chance at being future contributors or starters … do u believe any have a legitimate shot at becoming anything down the road ? It would be nice to have some projects on there with potential … not sure i see that … still miffed at the Baxter thing and curious to the story behind it !

  • dgh57

This tells me how they view their PS and that they must of shown something in practice especially the longer termed ones. Interesting that we kept 2 WRs with Sanders and Cotch status still in doubt.

  • Shea Fahr

Yeah, if he can improve his Special Teams play and his overall blocking, he could be a nice compliment to what we have.

  • DrakePirate

Thats the only potential players I see paying off from that group (Moye vs Brown should be a good battle) would be great if one of them amounted to something down the road.

  • SteelersDepot

Not thinking Justin is going to make it.

  • Jollyrob68

Really, They liked Hubbard,Brown,Wilson, Alexander & Ross Ventrone will be special teams.

  • Callentown

Curious also, if you care to share your thoughts, on how both Embernasty and N. Williams are recovering.

Seemed the Steelers brass had high hopes for both but injuries ended that before it started. Thanks Dave!

  • DrakePirate

other than special teams … i don’t see anything there

  • DrakePirate

I know u haven’t been high on Justin, but i disagree .. i think he has some decent potential, but u may be right that he will not make it … it all depends if the steelers give him a real chance … given playing time i think he would do well.

You also were not high on Dwyer, but thankfully due to his feet hitting the ground with the brief unemployment stint he has become a Solid Situational Contributor and depth at Back up for several years to come if steelers wisely lock him up to a modest contract

  • DrakePirate

I think it was definitely our best draft in years … besides the Miss … curious about that one … we did a good job. Not sure about Landry … possible back up but i think thats his ceiling. I would have rather drafted another need in the 4th given the FA pickup of Gradkowski and the need to draft a future replacement for BB in a few years

  • steeltown

We need 3QBs in Pittsburgh.. and the Batch & Leftwich days are far behind us

  • steeltown

Well technically none are practice squaders at this point, just 90man future roster guys.. Kion Wilson has potential, as does Ventrone and J.Brown if he improves on special teams

  • SteelersDepot

Have no idea how they are doing, but unless something has gone wrong, they both should be ready for camp being as injuries took place last year in camp.

  • steeltown

Agreed. I seem to be mostly alone in that thinking. I was so over the Leftwich/Dixon days..and we’ve learned in the past that we need 3 QBs in Pittsburgh so regardless of the Gradkowski signing we needed a young guy to groom

  • DrakePirate

and Im very Glad Leftwhich is gone … we could have kept Batch for one more year, but yes we needed a 3rd QB … just that landry wouldn’t have been my pick thats all … would have rather taken a flyer in the 6th/7th or UDFA

  • kakello34

Don’t forget Wheaton. He should be stepping in for Sanders next year.

  • T R

don’t think he going to make it.. he also need to hit the weight room.

  • dgh57

We(the FO) undoubtedly think he is worthy of a 2nd look or he wouldn’t of been resigned. I think his arrow is pointing more up than down.

  • Callentown

Yeah, how did I miss Wheaton! Good catch and I agree.

  • Robert Alaniz

He has more meat on him than Moye. We shall see as he can also return punts.

  • Jacob Dixon

You missed Wheaton because he played so little you forgot about him

  • srdan

Lets hope that we dont find out what landry has to offer for another 6-7 years

  • cencalsteeler

Not sure, but I think that preseason catch in the endzone leapfrogged Moye over Brown. Other than that, Moye has not impressed me too much. But, I do agree with TR. Moye, Brown and Jarvis need to hit the weight room.

  • srdan

ok, I’m off to have a few drinks. HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!

    Stay safe tonight!

  • joed32

They have been taking flyers on late round QBs for years and none of them has been able to stick. They must like Landry to spend a 4th on him.

  • joed32

He didn’t make the team and he sat out for almost the whole season and now he’s on another practice squad. Lots of players look good in the 4th quarter of preseason games playing against other guys who aren’t going to make it. I don’t think there is any mysterious story behind it.

  • DoctorNoah

Agreed. We look small overall at LB, DE/ NT, WR. Moye is so thin he looks like a bobble head with his helmet on, but I still think he has as good if not better potential than Justin Brown. With ten pounds of muscle on his frame he could really be good. He needs to bring in balls better. Jarvis needs 20 pounds and a strength coach if he’s going to be a pass rush threat in the NFL

  • John Hinton

Agreed. That was a painful time.

  • Mike Sweeney

The kickoff unit was a disaster. Sushi, made way to many tackles. So anyone who isn’t afraid to bang, would be nice.

  • DrakePirate

they might like him, but he’s nothing special … i actually liked a couple of the guys they have taken before … i can’t remember all the names but their was one that didn’t do too bad when he had a chance with another team.

  • DrakePirate

i dont know about that …. all I’m saying is he looked good enough to keep on the practise squad … u can’t ask more from a guy in the preseason games than he produced … i do think its more to i than u say !

  • Jazz

Why? Ben Roethlisburger cannot play forever.

  • Jazz

The current Head Coach has done a terrible job of evaluating talent, just pathetic! Look at all the players that were drafted, released, and now paying dividends for other teams. When it comes to evaluating talent, Tomlin is a Joke!

  • Jazz

Once again, not using the talent that they currently have on staff.

  • DrakePirate

I dont know if it all falls on Tomlin, but I agree it seems we seem to evaluate talent a little different than most teams …

  • Betz Smiff

You nailed it……..the fact that you can’t remember their names means they aren’t playing anywhere else either, good reason for that, they weren’t good enought…… with Ben’s injury history, not to mention the injury history of Leftwich and Batch they had to take a young QB, not necessarily to be Ben’s successor but to be able to be the back up to the back up, able to at least function in an NFL offense if called upon. The time will come when they need to draft a stud QB to replace Ben but now isn’t the time. The hotshot QB’s now don’t sit for 2 or 3 years and learn, they want to (and should) play right away in order to get the most out of their rookie contract. When it happens here I think it has the potential to be a bit of a circus as it was in GB a few years back and even was here when Mark Malone was drafted #1 to succeed TB…..

  • Betz Smiff

What has Wheaton done to make anyone excited for him to be the #2 next year. All he does is break fingers…..They had better sign Cotch and another decent receiver.

  • Callentown

Personally, I thought he looked good before the finger thing first happened. Good routes, caught the ball well and ran well. Just not anywhere near enough.

  • Betz Smiff

    He caught 6 balls for less than 70 yards…0 TD’s 2 Broken Digits….

  • Betz Smiff

And got manhandled trying to block

  • Callentown

Yeah, but we got to see him also in pre-season. I don’t think it’s Wheaton who caused himself to not get playing time. The fingers played a role, but it seemed he was getting more playing time when that happened.

  • Callentown

Ha, seemed everyone in the TE/WR world got manhandled early on this season.

  • r4kolb

If you go by the theory you have on Moye you would have to say Wheaton is a dud too? I think none of the receivers not named Brown, Sanders, or Cotchery really impressed. Next year will be the true test to see who has potential.

  • Tim Gleason

Do these Futures players count against the 2014 salary cap? Since the Steelers do not have 51 players under contract, would they count against Rule 51?
