About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Dan

Man the Browns suck. We could’ve had that 11th slot!

  • Dan

Must suck to be a Redskins fan.

  • steeltown

Well……….we tend to pick very well in the teens…

  • Shea Fahr

After watching Steve leave the Field today, a NT should at least be in the conversation if slotted properly.

  • CW

Personally I’m thinking about the trade back possibilities right now. Trade back to the 20th overall pick and pick up an extra 3rd and maybe an extra 6th round pick.

There’s a huge number of top talent players in this draft at positions the Steelers need and shouldn’t really miss out by trading back just a few spots which adds more later options at other weak spots.

  • Kevin Gobleck

Well i’m hoping for either Darqueze Dennard or Mike Evans at that spot

  • BurgherinMD

I just hope they do not reach for a LT at 15. This might lean them toward secondary or wr.

  • T R

Why are the Ravens not before us in the draft.. didn’t we have better record then them?

  • BurgherinMD

    strength of schedule

  • Chris92021

Chances are, we are going to have 2 3rd round comp picks for Mike Wallace and Keenan Lewis. The league better not take a pick from us…if they do, they better take one from the Dolphins for doing the exact same thing one week later.

  • Chris92021

Strength of schedule is the determining factor for draft positioning.

  • CW

Based on the strength of opposition after win loss tie record factored in.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

How many picks do we have this yr with all of our comps.

  • Steeler Goetz

Cameron Irving, FSU’s LT would be nice. So would, Notre Dame’s DT, Louis Nix, or Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. I doubt the Steelers would spend a 1st rounder on Mike Evans (Tx A&M WR (6’5″ 225)) nor do I think he’ll be there at 15.

  • CW

Maybe we get two 3rd round compensatory picks. I still want the team to add as much talent in this prospect rich draft as possible.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

KELVIN BENJAMIN write it down its going to happen.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Someone has to want to trade with us for that to happen. As in They want to. Not just us asking them.

  • CW

Of course, but in recent years there are always teams looking to trade up since the draft salary situation has improved.

  • DarthVenamis

Biggest needs IMO are TE and DB. I am curious what position the Steelers end up going. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a DL in the first either though.

  • Ike Evans

I want darquze denard but hes only 5’10 and i feel like they like drafting bigger corners…hes nasty tho….not sure if louis nix will be there….maybe haha…..mike evans and sammy may not be there either….there are alot of 3-4 type d ends that arent projected right now that will rise as the process goes on as more and mofe front offices look at tape so i think the ultimately draft a end…..i want justin gilbert or dennard tho….

  • cp72

I am right there with you. He’s an element to this offense we need. Can you imagine throwing slip screens to AB with Miller and Benjamin blocking and he would be an absolute beast in the red zone.

  • mlc43

I agree with you! I am just reversed. Depends on how the draft falls, though.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Houston jax browns and oak may all need qbs so lets just say we may have a good shot at landing a playmaker in another skilled position hopefully cb

  • David Edward

Unfortunately, 15 is likely to low too get CB Darqueze Dennard (who I think would be an excellent pick). They might have a shot at Ifo Ekpre-Olomu from Oregon. Even though he’s small (under 5’10 and about 185) he plays bigger and faster and is a strong tackler, which is a good fit for the Steeler system. Of course WR Mike Evans would be nice at that spot (but he could go higher). If he comes out, and I think he will, DE Stephon Tuitt would be a nice bookend to Heyward…although I’m not sure they would go DE with the #1 pick 3 times in 6 years. On the contrary, I don’t see his teammate NT Louis Nix as a good pick for the Steelers at 15.

  • dgh57

Seems to me like the 1st tie breaker should be how you fair against other 8-8 teams if you play them instead of strength of schedule. We lost to the Bears therefore we should be picking before them!

  • JT

    MIKE!!! EVANS!!!!!

    That is all.

  • Ike Evans

Man….keenan lewis ballin this yr smh

  • mlc43

they are taking one…I think it’s a late rounder.

  • RW

Come on… I’d much rather have had a shot at the playoffs than 4 spots ahead of where we are. We were a missed field goal away from a miracle.

  • CW

They’d have a hard time justifying that after allowing several other teams to walk away with a mild fine and no threat of loss of a draft pick for the same offense after the incident with Tomlin.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

    or KB

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

    Kelvin Benjamin.

  • David Edward

He’s been a riser up the boards this year so maybe.

  • Josh Knepshield

Greg Robinson, Cedric Ogbuehi, Darqueze Dennard, and Louis Nix III are all in contention.
2nd Round Kyle Fuller, Loucheiz Purifoy are in contention as well
steelers will not get a 3rd for Keenan Lewis, he did not make enough money in his contract even if his play says it should.

  • Andrew Grigsby

Would be awesome if Clemson WR Sammie Watkins is available at 15 but he’ll be gone. Really like Ok. St CB Justin Gilbert. Or Bama Safety Clinton Dix.

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

I would love to trade back but i don’t think our pick is worth it.

  • Jeff Johnson

Need a CB, S, OT, DL, WR in this draft to fix this team. Defense needs a lot of improvement. Only if the team took care of business vs the phins

  • Jeff Johnson

It’s gonna be a long 4 months now leading up to the draft. Anybody watching the bowl games to see some draft prospects? That seems like the only thing to do now as a steeler fan

  • Jeff Johnson

From what I’ve learned, Tomlin doesn’t like drafting secondary players in the first round even though I wish that they would this year in 2014

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Both of my two eyes will be on the National championship game to watch Benjamin.

  • Kevin Gobleck

    Or Allen Robinson

  • DrakePirate

    hope so !!

  • DrakePirate

thats the perfect scenario in my book …. pick up Benjamin plus a 3rd !!! that would be awesome

  • DrakePirate

No way does Keenan Lewis get a 3rd …. but hopefully I am wrong and u are right !!

  • Jazz

Man, I agree with you 100%!! And not just because Steve got hurt; teams have ran all up the middle this year on the Steelers. McClendon isn’t a true NT, he better suited to play DE. Even AL Woods isn’t that disruptive at the NT position. The Steelers need a dominant NT that will command double teams. They don’t have any1 like that on their defense. And I’m sorry, if LeBeau doesn’t think his players are too old, then without a doubt he clearly is senile and its time to move on. Look what Jason Cambell did to the secondary today. That defense is no match against quality QB’s like Brady, Peyton Manning, Flacco and many others. Yeah, the defense is still disruptive against Rookie QB’s or guys that are average QB’S. This team needs some younger players with speed. Cortez Allen? I like him, not quite sold on him as of yet. They need a shut down CB, man, where is Rod Woodson?

  • T R

hope we beat down the KC Chiefs next year.. damn dem..

  • TheBlitz

Why are Steelers picking ahead of Baltimore despite having a better division record ?

  • DrakePirate

what are u talking about ??? we have almost no targets at 15 … but lots at 20-25 …. AMARO, EBRON and BENJAMIN … who wouldn’t want a Sure thing in the 1st Rnd plus an extra 3rd rounder …

What exactly are u looking at around 15 that we can’t afford to trade back ?

  • Superdriller316

    FU!!!!! Andy Fat Ass Reid!!!!!!

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

    Strength of Schedule.

  • DrakePirate

NO to both …. what do people see in Evans … Slow, no separation and nothing special … Benjamin is WAYYYYY better !!!

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

we had the 16th pick last year and nobody wanted to trade with us.

  • DrakePirate

LT at 15th would be the worst possible pick …. heck no !!!

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

And more of a physical specimen.

  • DrakePirate

GOSH I HOPE SO !!! … even better if we trade back and get him and pick up a 3rd or 4th

  • DrakePirate

NOOOO to Evans and DD …. YES to Benjamin,Ebron, Amaro !!!

  • DrakePirate

    Yes Sir !!

  • DrakePirate

Have u watched him play ? the guy is a beast .. Evans not so much, despite his inflated stats !

  • DrakePirate

NOOOOOOOO !!!! don’t like him one bit …. YouTube Benjamin please … WAYYYYYYY Better !!!!

  • DrakePirate

    Yessss

  • DrakePirate

will have to take a look at him … is he projected 1st rounder ?

  • DrakePirate

u are smoking dope … none of those guys are going in the 1st round to the steelers … where did u get those names please ?

  • DrakePirate

please youtube … Benjamin … better fit than watkins for us !

  • DrakePirate

GeeeeeZZZ are we the only ones Touting Benjamin here ….. he is Sooooo much better than Evans … and where is this Nix crap coming from

  • DrakePirate

YES … way more of a physical specimen … i just hope they provide him with a personal trainer in his contract … he has had some weight issues in the past !

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Ya we are. even though hes the second comming of megatron.

  • Brendan

Marquise Lee was very impressive. I know he’s not the big receiver everyone on here desperately wants but he’d be able to slide right into for sanders. Scary fast, great hands, great attitude.

  • Andrew Grigsby

Forgot about Benjamin, your right he’s a beast. Ben would love that.

  • Jazz

Unless something drastically haapens, I can’t see taking a LT at #15. I’m thinking WR/CB/NT/Safety

  • DrakePirate

Actually we had the 17th pick … and how do u know no one wanted to trade .. .trades are possible … like i said … wheel and deal .. which we are not good at … they wanted JJ thus no trade down

  • Jazz

They will not reveal that until the draft order is complete. I think the Steelers should know something around February or March after the first owners meeting.

  • David Edward

Lol…guess you aren’t a fan of the top CB. They made a mistake not taking Eifert this year, so it’s iffy that they’d go for a TE with the top pick in ’14. I don’t rate the top TEs coming out as high as Eifert. I think Evans and Benjamin’s stock with rise or lower a bit based on what they do at the combine.

  • Jazz

Why draft a CB if he’s not 6’1 or taller? Too many WR’s and TE’s 6’4 – 6’5, it would be a waisted pick rounds 1-2. Look at Shamarko Thomas; they gave up a 3rd round draft pick in 2014 for a guy that is barely 5’9. Now that was just STUPID! Too many Safeties out there 6’0 and they chose that guy. Tomlin and Colbert should be reprimanded. I hope Ed Bouchett was right, Tomlin will not have as much pull in the draft room next May.

  • Kevin Gobleck

either 1-2, he out jump everyone for the ball

  • Kevin Gobleck

I’d say he is more of the next Plaxico, with out a bullet in his leg of course

  • Kevin Gobleck

Why not Dennard? and Evans is great when it comes to one on one coverage

  • JT

It’s doubtful that Evans is even there at 15. Certainly can’t make that kind of evaluation between the two.

  • alevin16

YES! They kept talking about how he rested his starters many times in the past, that really translated into Super Bowl wins for him. I so want to see him blubbering next week after a pounding about lack of momentum going into the playoffs

  • Ike Evans

    Dennard might

  • Alan Felicia

If they pick a CB, would rather pick Justin Gilbert/Oklahoma State – slightly bigger, better tackler, and more durable than Dennard. IMHO, size and length is key since Cinn and Baltimore WRs are 6’1″ and taller. They can get away with a shorter DBs as long as they have bulk (kinda like Joe Haden).
However, for my money, would rather Pittsburgh draft NT Nix.
As far as Kelvin Benjamin, he needs to have a great 40 time in the combine to even be considered in the 1st round.

  • Ike Evans

Like i just said….they like drafting bigger corners…..but the otherside of that argument would be……joe haden, darelle revis, brandon flowers, alteraun verner are all pro bowlers this year under 6’1 or even 6 feet….finding a sherman is rare and patrick petersons dont come along all the time

  • Aric Brown

I stopped listening when you called flacco a quality quarterback

  • Aric Brown

Because its the height that ur drafting not the player…SMH

  • Shea Fahr

I do Not think Dick is Senile. I think he had 3 or 4 Rookies playing on defense this year at different times…it is called transition.

  • Crazy Bone

So close to having a top ten pick. Now we will miss on a franchise LT. This team also needs to add major talent to the front seven before they can be real super bowl contenders. 8-8 is the worst record you can have. I would rather be last and out of the playoffs than a mediocre .500 team.

  • Tom

How is that philosophy working out in Cleveland?

  • Ryan Barton

    1. Mike Evans or best available CB
    2. MLB or best available CB (if Evans is selected in rd 1)
    3. Best available OT
    4. DE/OLB
    5. RB (Speed/Change-of-pace back)
-And then the rest defensive depth.

  • Kevin Gobleck

I like Robinson especially Dennard and Nix is an Intriguing prospect but NO to Purifoy he is overrated and got burned a lot of times when i watched him

  • rc_tha_don

Since we all givin opinions I think that the steelers go with CJ Mosley and build an elite linebacker crew and getting rid of woodley learning from timmons while he can and having jarvis jones coming off the edge, maybe jason worilds in there too. A new steel curtain lets aim for. The rest of the rounds take whats best but we need a CB, WR, and some good OLineman in there too. Try moving Sanders and Woodley in the offseason make room for whatever needs fixing at the time.

  • grw1960

All positions except QB and OL could be in play in the 1st round.
We will not know several pieces of important info for some time, some maybe not even until after the draft.
Status of the LB core is one of the elephants in the process.
Who will be the Buck LB in 2014 ? Will Spence really be in the running?
Will Worilds / Woodley be on the roster in 2014?
A 3d round comp pick could be big to the Steelers.

  • Geoff Cordner

Yes, the Steelers need LBers! Very shallow at that position, I think. Need some studs. I think the OL is in good shape, actually. I also think we are fine at WR and need someone on DL to replace Keisel / Ziggy.

  • Geoff Cordner

No LB needs? I think that’s a big need.

  • Geoff Cordner

What about Wallace? Certainly we should get a good comp pick for him!

  • treeher

Look how many teams we lost to that are higher in the draft … Raiders, Titans, Bears, Vikings, and in pre-season Redskins and Giants. We may have missed playoffs by a field goal (and some bad calls) but we didn’t deserve to be there.

  • Alan Felicia

I completely agree with your assement with having a quality NT. I’ve been saying this for the last weeks – McLendon is not a long term solution! As far as Woods, there were lots of chatter on this site about how great Woods played against Cincy that Pittsburgh need not look for one in the draft.
BTW, this is the first year the Pittsburgh defense have been ranked below the top 10 in Rushing Yards allowed (ranked 18th) AND given up Rushing Avg Over 100 yards (115.1 rushing yards/game) since the 2003 Season.

  • Luke Shabro

    I’d guess a 4th RDer for Lewis

  • Luke Shabro

Do you listen to the Terrible Podcast?? Dave stated the stats on there that up the middle we only allowed something like 2.25 yards per carry and that was somewhere in the top 10 of the league. What you are saying makes no sense.

  • Luke Shabro

The Shamarko pick was not a bad one at all. He is a rookie. Nobody complains about Earl Thomas or Eric Weddle’s heights. Let’s give the kid another year before we start complaining about a 4th round pick

  • Luke Shabro

Sanders is a UFA. Woodley is a bigger cap hit gone than he is with the team. Worilds is going to go for big money. Outside of possibly drafting Mosley your scenario is not going to happen.

  • srdan

Yeah, every draft their fans watch for a couple years is a kick in the balls.

  • srdan

In that order of players. I like it. It can even be a TE instead of WR, just some type of mismatch for the redzone.

  • srdan

    He is 23

  • srdan

I looooove the shamarko pick. No question about it.

I can see why everyone wants taller players, but the skillset is much more important. How many of those 6 foot safeties have corner cover skills? Shamarko was our nickle corner before he was hurt.

  • srdan

Wow, I look at that list and see a lot of QBs going. You could argue that everyone picking ahead of us except for Atlanta, Detroit, and NY should go 1st round QB. This is the most overreached position as well, and there are a lot of good qbs in teh draft.

This is a good year to truly be looking at best player available.

  • srdan

People make a lot bigger deal about draft slots than they really are. Those same browns pick ahead of us every year by 10 picks at least. What do they have to show for it? It’s all on the front office to do their homework. Perfect example is Mingo vs Jarvis Jones. While neither lit it up, JJ had a much better 1st year. Cleveland fans are already calling mingo a bust.

  • srdan

I agree. OLB is a big need. We’re OK at ILB assuming spence and/or Foote come to camp..

  • srdan

Benjamin is old for a rookie. For comparison he is two years younger than Antonio Brown. This is something the steelers don’t always shy away from, but I think Jarvis was seen as almost a free agent pickup because he played in the system already. He hit the ground running as much as one can in LeBeau s scheme. Benjamin is still a raw talent with route running. Which I would make an arguement that is irrelevant because of what he would be asked to do, catch balls in the redzone over people, lol.

I’m excited to watch him in teh championship game.

  • Callentown

Who cares. Next season is 9 months away and this one is over. Not a fun year.

  • Bernie B Roten

Draft Ozzie Newsome with the first pick and use him to salvage the rest of the draft. I’m tired of the draft busts.

  • Jon Crissinger

Yeah I was thinking more Alshon Jeffery, with knocks on speed but still the big physical, jump ball guy. And I would love to have Alshon Jeffery on our team.

  • srdan

The woodley comment is true, but deceiving. He costs about 500k more gone next year, but then nothing the following year. If you keep him next year, he costs you again the following year. I have no faith in him and would rather just cut our losses now. But for this to happen we need 93 back to not be bare bones thin at OLB. So his scenario is not to be easily dismissed.

  • RMSteeler

Everyone forgets that Shamarko had a 40″+ vertical at the combine. The best of all DB’s if not close for all positions. He didn’t really show it this year, but once the game slows down for him and he works on high pointing the ball, some receivers and TE’s are going to get embarassed and subject to their team mate’s kidding. He CAN play much taller than his height. Let’s see how he progresses with that facet.

  • RMSteeler

I think they burned a 2014 3rd rounder last year to move up for Shamarko.

  • RMSteeler

I agree. The average draft position for players on this year’s roster was 134, 4th round.

  • srdan

Maybe he can draft us the next flacco or Oher.

The grass always looks greener on the other isde of the fence.

  • RMSteeler

Have to see what Goodell’s dart board punishment is on Tomlin. Loss of a pick was stated as only one possibility. They left the door open by saying, or other actions, dependent on final draft order. He may move Ravens up over Steelers for a pick in a round. Have never heard of this happening before, but Goodell could make a screwball decision like this.

  • Jeff

He just signed Flacco to a billion dollar deal, and he threw for more picks than TDs this year………. I’ll stick with Colbert & Co…… I think we’ve had better long term success

  • DrakePirate

Do u think Dennard … is worth that high a pick ?? I would rather have Ha Ha Dix if we went that route ..

  • Bernie B Roten

The Flunko deal was a head scratcher. Something you know he didnt want to do but had to do. But Ozzy drafts well. Something the steelers havent done lately.

  • DrakePirate

do you think Dennard is that much of a sure thing ?? plus he’s small … Evans noooo way, i see a huge ??? mark with that guy … like I said no separation, just not sure he can replicate what he does in college in the NFL ..

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

Which means hell probably enter the draft.

  • Kevin Gobleck

Actually i believe that he is a sure thing and the best CB in the draft given how much much they asked of him at Michigan St. and how successful he was, and his size is fine i believe that Darelle Revis is tbe same size

  • sean mcmartin

It’s so true, Flacco looked good having Boldin on his side.
Now he reverts back to the same old Flacco without him..
Still think it was shady that the harbaugh brothers traded Boldin..

  • srdan

he is in his prime now. So you would expect him to play day 1, but he is not polished enough to do that.

I dont watch college football, I am only paraphrasing what I have read. So my statements may be incorrect.

  • srdan

Chances are one of these picks gets altered due to Tomlins goof.

  • DrakePirate

    thats what Im thinking

  • DrakePirate

Actually I usually am … just not this year … don’t see any great CB’s projected in 1st round… loved Eiffert and I agree with u they made a mistake not getting him … but I think Amaro or Ebron are comparable or at least more than sufficient to upgrade us at the position …. I WANT A 2 DYNAMIC TE SET for once and for all … why are we so late with this trend … should have had it years ago after seeing its results with other teams !!!!!!

  • DrakePirate

Please doth compare ANYBODY to Darelle Revis … DR has impeccable form and technique .. truly unbelievable .. he is exactly how u want to teach a CB to play … best technician I’ve ever seen in my life … take a look at some of his youtube practise drills …

That said, if u are so high on the guy, I will take a look at Dennard and let ya know what I think … although I’m not high on short CB’s but if he’s a baller i think u are right it doenst matter !

  • Kevin Gobleck

I wasn’t comparing him as in talent i’m just trying to say short CBs can be good and this kid is a baller
wasn’t revis picked at 15 anyway? maybe that spot is meant for 5’11 corners

  • rc_tha_don

I think we’d be great with a solid LB core, and as far as Oline goes, we definately need at least 1 pick to reinforce our line I’ve seen it too many times already, our best lineman goes down and were forced into a lineman with little to no upside… Vellasco was a great filler this season… we could probably find nice lineman through free agency but regardless its something we need to patch up. As far as receivers go I only say we need one because we have plenty of quick and agile receivers but what were missing is the outside guy that you throw the jump or corner balls to, it would open Antonio to so many opportunities. Don’t get me wrong I would love if Moye or Brown had the talent to take that position but I’m just speculating as of now, I do believe Moye or Brown could take that position though. Cornerback is an obvious position we need help in. whether it’s to find a backup for depleting ike or a future starter it doesn’t really matter we need more hope at the CB position and the best time to get one is when Ike is on the comedown so he can watch and learn from one of the best to ever do it :)

  • rc_tha_don

you understand the logic behind my moves better than I do :) but yea if we got rid of woodley it would be an obvious move to sign worilds. Imagine Timmons and Mosely in the middle, and Jones and Worilds comin off the edges… nasty, nasty, NASTY LB squad.

  • srdan

    lol sure thing

  • srdan

Lets not forge that Evans is 3 years younger.

  • Patrick Reid

Jazz, I been screaming for us to draft Louis Nix from ND. Casey Hampton 2.0 potentially. The most important part of a 3-4 D is NT. You get a 350 beast in the middle, suck up double teams and it frees up everyone else to make plays. With Mac and Cam on the ends the o line and D as a whole would be be dominant. All of a sudden Woodley,Jones, the secondary , they all become better. The way to deal with elite QB’s is to squeeze the pocket. Do that and they become avg. I’ve heard people say pick a NT later. The NT class is garbage behind NIX. We need to commit to a position of need and draft the best person there. If thru some reason we keep Worlids and Woodley we could be outstanding at getting after the QB. Btw, it goes without saying that NIX is a stud against the run. Watch the tape.

  • Patrick Reid

If we don’t go Nix, I want Dennard. Or Ebron, Jenkins or Amaro at TE. That would be the answer to the big receiver need. Also, pairing with Heath would be dynamic on O.

  • DrakePirate

True, (actually closer to 2) but in this case i don’t think that matters much … I am just not sold on Evans … he indeed might be a star, but i see Benjamin as having much more ability and Talent … all i’m saying

  • Robert

And 13th overall in defense…..first time since 1992 when they also finished 13th…..

  • Robert

Doesn’t matter even if that stat is true. I don’t believe that McLendon, Williams, or Garvin are long term answers. Not enough pedigree……and it will also take JJ a little while to develop…..Keisel and/or Hood may be gone as well….115.1 yards a game is a HUGE number for a Steeler’s D…..and that lies almost exclusively on the front 7…

The reason why some are against Nix is because they only play about 50% or less plays in the game……usually on obvious passing situations…..but holding a team to 1 or 2 yards or even less on a 1st and 10 is a BIG part of the Steelers D…..

  • Robert

Yeah…..Clinton-Dix wouldn’t be bad since we are probably losing Clark…..but I’m still worried about the other ILB…..I know Williams is young and Garvin maybe be able to do it, but I would love to see Spence be the player that we thought he would be…..but with the injury, I’m not so sure…..I definitely don’t want a LT first round…..I am pretty happy with the O-Line at this point…..their run blocking will only get better if we keep Pouncey and I’m pretty sure we will…..but If we lose Manny, then we have to think about a WR cos I don’t think Wheaton can do that much yet…..

A big WR would make more impact … i think wheaton will be fine, but hope we trade down in 1st and pick up Benjamin … definitely No to a 1st round LT

Whether you feel as though he is a quality QB or not, he is 2-2 against Pittsburgh since 2012. And lets not forget how he smoked the defense on Thanksgiving night.

  • Jazz

I haven’t watched much film on Nix; I can only go by what I’ve heard. There seems to be some mix emotions as to how good he is, how good he potentially could be. My thing is this, why use a #1 Draft Pick (#15 overall) if the guy can’t step in and contribute immediately, not start, but at least contribute. From plenty of reports I’ve read up there in Pittsburgh, it appears that Dick LeBeau is aginst starting these guys anyway. What about the NT out of Penn State?

  • Jazz

I think Dennard will not be all that effective at the next level. Too short, too small. I like the kid out of Oklahoma State, Justin Gilbert. 6’0/200LBS.

  • Kevin Gobleck

Did you see his bowl game last night?

  • Patrick Reid

I really think that in reference to the complexity of Lebeau’s scheme he is reluctant to start rookies. That said, NT has to be one of the less complex spots on that defense. Also, I do like Dequan Jones from PSU. He is the closet thing next to Nix as far as a 3-4 NT. The rest are more 4-3 guys. Watch film on Nix and you will get my gist.

  • Patrick Reid

Dante Moncrief and Jordan Matthews are really great big wideouts. Who are being mentioned. Also Allen Robinson.

  • Patrick Reid

Iv’e really been impressed with Dennard. Especially in the Big Ten title game.

  • Patrick Reid

I was a huge Gilbert fan. The more I saw him the less I was. He relies so much on athleticism. Technique really lacks. I really think he will be good but I think that Dennard is much more complete. Kyle Fuller is good also, but injury concerns are there.

  • Patrick Reid

    Aaron Colvin.

  • Patrick Reid

Was really suprised at how bad Cyrus Kouandjio looked last night at LT. Stock might have dropped.

  • Patrick Reid

I agree on Shark Thomas. I think that at best he might be an Earl Thomas one day. He’s really physically gifted and seems to be a sponge for knowledge. Upside looks good.

  • Kevin Gobleck

Yeah it seems like he can’t block a basic speed rush, and i was never sold on him to begin with

  • DrakePirate

I think 5’11 is fine for a DB as long as they can play … we already have Tez who is tall would be nice to add some more height but not necessary like u said.

  • DrakePirate

Missed the game … what did u like about his play might i ask ? usually the first thing i look for in DBs is if they can press and when running with the Wr’s down the sidelines how fast and well do they turn and look at the QB while running … can’t stand when they dont turn their heads around … i really think thats critical.

  • Kevin Gobleck

Did you watch anymore of him?

  • Patrick Reid

Drake, Im the same way when I evaluate corners. Turn and ran very smoothly, physical, tackles very well and seems to always be around the ball. I first noticed him versus ND. They had some horrible PI call against him. That was one of the reasons my Fighting Irish gave Sparty its only loss this year.

  • DrakePirate

ya i did get to see a few videos of him … hard to give a strong eval from the little video, but he does seem aggressive doesn’t shy away from hitting … would prefer he wraps up with tackles but that can be taught, seems to be around the ball, decent speed but does not play fast … looks like low 4.5’s, would like to see what he does at the combine .. has slight build and decent to good stats but not gaudy

Can he play Nickel Back/inside slot if need be ? … from the little i’ve seen seems decent but would not spend a 1st on him, i know he will go in the 1st and is graded that way, but looks like 2nd-3rd round talent to me …

it may be asking too much, but would really like to go the way of Seattles Secondary CB’s … i really like that Blueprint … that aggressive style of pressing w/no fear really changes the attitude of a Defense

  • DrakePirate

Actually like Matthews much more than Evans at the next level.

  • Josh Knepshield

Are u dumb?!? Greg Robinson is a top 15 pick if he comes out, why don’t u read something before criticizing me. Lol Louis Nix=top 20. Cedric Ogbuehi=top 25. Darqueze Dennard is THE top cornerback in college football. Read something before making urself look stupid.

  • DrakePirate

didn’t mean they werent going in the 1st round … just saying those are not names i think the steelers are targeting … with the possible exception of DD .. which i highly doubt as well … i dont see any of those going to the steelers … completely outside the organisations path
