Bengals Sign Former Steelers Punter Zoltan Mesko

The Pittsburgh Steelers won’t be partaking in the playoffs this year, but as of Tuesday, their former punter will be.

Zoltan Mesko, who was signed by the Steelers following his waiving by the New England Patriots just prior to the start of the season, signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday and he will punt for them on Sunday in their Wild Card round game against the San Diego Chargers.

Mesko will be the Bengals third punter this season as he takes over for Shawn Powell, who was released after just two games that included a punt last week in the win over the Baltimore Ravens that traveled all of 10 yards.

Powell had succeeded Kevin Huber, who was placed on injured reserve because of a broken jaw suffered in the Week 15 loss to the Steelers when he was flattened by linebacker Terence Garvin on the touchdown return by Antonio Brown.

In his seven games with the Steelers, Mesko averaged 42.5 yards on 34 punts with a net average of 36.7 yards. He had three punts inside the 20 and two touchbacks. He was waived in late October as the team decided to replace him with veteran punter Mat McBriar for the remainder of the season.
