Steelers Sign CB Devin Smith, LB Dan Molls To Future Contracts

According to the official NFL transactions list, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed two more free agent players to reserve/futures contracts on Monday as cornerback Devin Smith and linebacker Dan Molls have both been added to the team.

Smith was with the team during training camp and the preseason and also had a brief stay on the practice squad.

Molls, an inside linebacker, was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo where he led the nation in tackles with 166 his senior year. He also had 10 games with 13 or more stops.

I like these.. Smith showed some ability last year and Dan Molls was really a damn good college Football player, he lacks ideal speed, but he made a ton of plays in college… maybe atleast an asset on special teams… love the competition that a 90man roster brings

I feel like 3/4 months ago our LB depth was solid and our OL a weakness! Really thought McFadden and Baxter would be part of this team. Amazed that it’s flipped!

I hope Hawthorne gets at least an invite so that we can make sure that pick was wasted

  • MoSteel79

Definitely agree with you here…didn’t expect either of them to be cut, let alone both of them. Especially surprised Baxter didn’t make PS but who knows

  • MoSteel79

Yeah thats wasted picks in 4th and 5th round past 2 drafts with Ta’amu, Rainey, Landry and Hawthorne…ok maybe early to say landry was a wasted pick but at very least a confusing pick

  • Kevin Gobleck

I will still hold out hope that you are wrong about this year, but i think you are right

I like Molls and hope that the steelers can go better in the 4th and 5 rounds this year need that important depth

  • MoSteel79

I think rainey was a calculated gamble but Ta’amu and Hawthorne were throw away picks. Hopefully this year is solid

  • gene mann

I am looking to put Jones up there too

They need to just swallow their pride, turn on the nfl draft combine on tv, and pick whoever deion sanders says impresses him. I watch it every year and the guy nails it almost to the letter.

  • Brendon Glad

    That is regarding DBs only.

Going back to 2001 the last 13 years of 5th round picks haven’t produced much. Sylvester and Gay were 5ths in years where they had multiple 5th round choices. Other than that, nada.

Technically Ta’amu can’t be considered a throw away pick at this point as he is on another NFL roster and getting playing time (Arizona). At worst, what he can be at this point is a mistake. He isn’t a throwaway a la Huey Richardson.
