According to a Thursday report by Tom Pelissero of USA Today, the 2014 salary cap should be set by Monday as long as any unexpected issues don’t come up.
The cap number, according to a Thursday report by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, will be $133 million per team, which would be a $10 million increase over last season.
According to a Wednesday report by Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, the Pittsburgh Steelers would be $6,748,066 over a $132 million cap number. If the number comes in at $133 million per team, that number of course drops down to $5,748,066 over and would mean that by merely cutting tackle Levi Brown, the Steelers would be in cap compliance.
Outside of releasing Brown, the Steelers are still expected to restructure the contract of wide receiver Antonio Brown to free up nearly another $4 million in cap space. Linebacker Lawrence Timmons also could also be in line for another restructure as well and that would also free up another $4 million.
Those three moves alone would clear roughly $14 million in cap space for the 2014 season and put the Steelers around $8.25 million under the cap with more business surely to be on tap.
