Report: Steelers To Meet With Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert At Combine

The defensive backs won’t run at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine for a few more days, but the Pittsburgh Steelers will certainly be meeting with a few of them in the meantime.

One of the top two cornerbacks in the draft class, Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert, is scheduled to meet with the Steelers Sunday night, according to Jim Wexell of Steel City Insider on Twitter.

Gilbert, who measured in at Indianapolis at 6 feet, 202 pounds, has 33 1/8 arms with 8 5/8 hands. He led the Big 12 with six interceptions in 2013 and also returned six kickoffs for touchdowns during his college career.

Gilbert is a first-round prospect and credited with 182 total tackles in 51 games played.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Ike Evans

    I
    Want
    This
    Kid
    In
    Black and gold

  • DoctorNoah

Yeah but not in first round. Lots of good, teachable CB’s in the draft.

  • Ike Evans

That’s our problem now….good, teachable, average…..we need playmakers….I could care less about value….can he make a play? Ok, I want him….don’t care what position on defense gets drafted and I don’t care about value…..playmakers….everything else is gonna lead to the same defensive bs we have now….solid and not game changing….

  • Jack Gardner

Let me just say that people who think we need to take WR early should rethink! This years WR class Is super deep, and we could pick up a quality player in the 2nd or 3rd! Take a look at last year and you will see the one thing that hurt us was Ike, I think we can see that his age is catching up to him. He had an awful year and we need to find hia replacement! Justin or Dennard are two great options for a team that gave up too many big plays last year! So the secondary should be a adressed right off the bat IMO!

  • StarSpangledSteeler

As of right now (today) Gilbert is my pick at 1.15

CB is our biggest need. Gilbert is the best NFL CB prospect in the draft. He can start over Willie Gay from day one. He can play every snap on defense plus special teams. How is that not value at 1.15?

We have gambled and lost on so many middle round CBs these past few years. It’s time to stop screwing around.

Plus you MUST look at cap ramifications. If we draft Gilbert we can cut Ike. That saves $8 million. And it helps our negotiating power to re-sign Cortez Allen.

  • dkoy85

Gilbert or Dennard would look good across from Allen. If Allen reaches his potential and a solid safety is picked up in FA and the secondary is very good.

  • Iron Cadet

Yes! He could contribute right away. I want either mike evans or justin gilbert. And then either Kyle fuller or Jordan Matthews. Please!

  • Ike Evans

Did you see Jordan Matthews ran a friggin 4.4 ? Lol I wasn’t expecting him to run that fast

  • Iron Cadet

Oh yeah did u seem him bench?? 21 reps, 2nd most for receivers. In comparison mike evans had 12

  • Brian Miller

I would be ecstatic if we get either Dennard, Gilbert, or Fuller in the first or second round…and then let’s turn around and get SJB, Desir or McGill in the 3rd or 4th round…that would be ideal IMO.

  • Ike Evans

I don’t think he gets anywhere near us I’m the 2nd round lol like you said b4 ….we would be lucky if he falls

  • Matt Manzo

OMG!!!! That is my dream!!!!! I just wish we were picking higher in the 3rd. I think Desir and SJB might be gone but good chance McGills still there.

  • Matt Manzo

Yes! If he’s there we have to get him. He’s the only one I think is worth the 1.15, for the reasons u just stated.

  • blackandgoldBullion

I would love Gilbert. Not just CB, but KR. Thank you. Unfortunately, I feel the only way they get him is if the teams ahead go on a run with QB’s, OT’s, Wr’s. I doubt very much that he gets past Detroit, but I am praying that these WR’s keep burning it up, and that the QB’s throw darts. Stranger things have happened.

The only other guy I like up there is Ebron. Otherwise, I am really praying for a tradedown which would be like a dream with all the talent through the draft.

  • Kareem Daniels

This should be the Steelers 1st round pick. Bryant from Clemson could be 2nd or 3rd rd pick. Denard is a pass interference call waiting to happen.

  • Iron Cadet

    Let a guy hope

  • pat

DeCastro and Jarvis both fell. But im looking for a trade back and getting an earlier 2nd round to take Matthews

  • SFIC

8 1/2″ hands?!?!?! My little sister has bigger hands.

  • Brian Tollini

If he had big hands he’d be a WR. And if my Aunt had
    balls….well…..you know the rest.

  • Andrew Alberico

That’s the trouble. We draft “teachable” players in later rounds. Just once, draft a special, impact player in the first round. A game changer. Too much talk of trading down. If anything, trade up for an all-pro potential player. We have had enough of mediocrity. No more 8-8s.

  • DoctorNoah

Still on record wanting Ebron. Talk about potential all-pro impact right off the bat… Even the big receivers can get stuffed at the line, and even good CB’s get manhandled by NFL receivers. I think of the depth of the draft and the relative immaturity of the players and think a lot of the first rounders will still take time to develop. Take a physical matchup problem who’s smart and willing to do the work…

  • Steve

Justin Gilbert is a ball hawk with good hands, that can run back kicks. He could make a good replacement for Ike, but I don’t see him starting the 1st year if picked by the Steelers. He will be a good special teams player and that is where he will start out at.

  • grw1960

If the Steelers had a WR like Evens , maybe they would have scored more points and Ike’s aging woes wouldn’t have been such a problem.
…. Yes the Steelers need another good CB , FS , DE/DT and better depth in general. But it would probably be the 2nd half the season at the earliest. Before any defensive draftee would make any kind of impact this season. Unless they return kicks or punts.
….A WR like Evens could impact the points scored on offense by the 4th game of the season.( don’t care for Benjamin) There will be a couple WRs in the 2nd round that might also be able to make an early impact….
I was hoping Moncreif might fall the end of the 3d. But with the combine he had today. That won’t happen.

  • steeltown

I’d be happy if he was the selection

  • Ike Evans

I don’t know anything about the bigger corners in this draft like desir or McGill or the other kid from nc state, but I know lebeau and Colbert love big corners so that’s definitely in play

  • Brian Miller

Desir had a really good shrine game from what I hear, the problem is I think he is climbing up a lot of people’s draft boards…heard an interview with him, he was intelligent and well spoken…I think SJB did well at the shrine game too, really like his size plus he played in a good conference against good opponents.

  • WIINGY

No reason why he couldn’t start. A lot of times Steelers rookies never started because a veteran was in front of them. Jarvis, Vince Williams both started last year. If anything he could play nickel and that’s a lot of snaps.

  • blackandgoldBullion

And I like SJB if they can’t get Gilbert in the 1st.

  • LayDownTheHammer

Based on cover skill technique, I would not put him in the “top 2.”

  • Melly

    nice song!!

  • Melly

I c Desir and SJB both going in the 2nd Rd.

  • steelster

Justin gilbert will be gone before the steelers pick. I have seen 2015 first round mocks with 5 corners in it. Just gives you something to think about

  • Brian Miller

There has been a lot of hype around Desir…if he runs a sub 4.5 he probably will go 2nd round…I would be happy with SJB though, I hope he runs a slower 40 and he slips in the draft.

  • Chad H

I like Ebron. However the top TEs in the league have never won a SB. Do I think we need a TE? Yes, but let’s look at this years SB being won with D. Our last 2 SBs were won with D. So I don’t see a TE as that much of a value at 1.15. Would I be upset if we picked him there? No.

  • bonairsfavoriteson

Value, crapu, if the guy ya draft is better than what ya got , ya got value. duh.

  • steelster

direction and strategy and long term thinking lead to value picks.

  • DoctorNoah

The question you have to ask yourself is: would we have gotten to either Super Bowl without Heath Miller? He is at the end of a wonderful and illustrious career, and wow he’s not quite as old as Ike Taylor or Ryan Clark, the drop off in Tight end play has been profound

  • cencalsteeler

I agree Ike. Whatever the Steelers plan is for Shark, I’d like to see them address the other safety position in round 2. I may be mistaken, but Colbert seems to pick in pairs. For those of us who watched the incoming receiving class, this is who were going to have to deal with in the future. I’d rather stay ahead of the game than playing the game of catch up later on.

  • steelster

Why do you think he is at the end of his career?

  • DoctorNoah

He’s on the wrong side of 30, the wrong end of a bad knee injury, and after a year of the world’s best rehab, clearly had lost a step in his route running and had a lot of failures as a blocker. This has been mentioned on this site multiple times during the season. We have a tendency to remember great players in their heyday, and we will always remember Heath as Ben’s reliable safety valve , as an incredible blocker and as the quintessential underrated tight end that should always have made it to the pro bowl but wasn’t quite flashy enough. I just don’t think he’s going to come back next year and be dominant. I hate to say it. His play really dropped off.

  • steelster

he might be on the decline but I say wait another year to draft a tight end we have too many other needs. Also, Ebron has been compared to being a poor man’s Vernon davis. Davis has only had 2 great years in the nfl, he is very inconsistent.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I 50% agree with you and 50% disagree. You cannot simply eliminate the possibility of taking a 1st round WR. You always want to take the BPA. If the BPA is a WR or a receiving TE you take him.

Football is a game of attrition. If we suffered any injury to Antonio Brown or Heath Miller we would be in a world of hurt.

I do agree the WR class is deep and a VERY GOOD WR should be available at 2.15. Ideally I would draft Gilbert or Dennard at 1.15 and a taller #2 type WR at 2.15.

  • Steve

My thoughts were Gay and Allen will start in front of Gilbert, if Steelers draft him. When the Steelers go with the extra DB that is when he will get snaps.

  • Steve

Was thinkin the same while watching the clip.

  • Steve

Its not how big but how you use them that counts:)

  • shawn

I would LOVE a playmaker as CB, but i have to admit right now my pick is for one of the TE’s prob Ebron in the 1st

  • shawn

If she had drafted a TE last year or any of the years before we would have made the playoffs this year … TE is right up there in need with every other position !

  • shawn

it was a little faster than i thought … but as they say slow is smooth and smooth is fast and he is about as smooth as one can be as a WR … he will be one of the steals of the draft !

  • shawn

21 reps … crazy .. as much as Clowney as a WR

  • shawn

i thought there was a chance that he falls to mid 2nd but after his combine i have to say … late 1st to early 2nd … we would have to do a trade down in 1st or trade up in 2nd … its looking less likely after today

  • shawn

i dont think either will go in the 2nd … Desir no way … SJB doubted … but lets see what they do in the combine

  • Jason White

If I’m picking a DB in the first round and they’re all on the board I’d probably go with Calvin Pryor for these reasons. Even if they was to cut Ike Taylor we have Allen and Gay who are capable of starting. Assuming Ryan Clark isn’t back as the starter and I highly doubt it we have nobody whom I trust for certain to man that position. A tall, fast hard hitting safety instills fear in receivers (see Kam Chancellor)

I’d love to see Shamarko Thomas and Calvin Pryor manning the safety positions for the next 7-10 years.

However if Justin Gilbert is the pick at 15 I’d be as comfortable as a Baltimore Raven in the back of a police car.

  • steelster

gay is a good nickel corner but he was a nightmare as a starter.

  • Jason White

William Gay played a good bit of his snaps as a starter and did an admirable job. In 2013 Gay was the most consistent and really the best corner on the team. I’d like to see them address cornerback in free agency. Perhaps someone like Sam Shields who is familiar with the system and might I add he’s pretty damn fast.

  • steelster

sure, if they can get him at the right price, can’t see the packers letting him go

  • steelster

we may have a huge problem at olb. The combine rumor is that at least a dozen teams are interested in Jason Worilds. What happens if he isn’t resigned ? This would change the steelers draft strategy in a big way.

  • Matt Manzo

I think there’s a good chance we trade down and target Pryor. Unless they’re in love with Evans, I think Gilbert is the only one they want at 15.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

I been SCREAMIN the same thing if we have a need at a certain position and love a certain player jump on him quick because they will not be there in the next round and the talent/size/speed level at the same position may be a huge drop off with teams trading picks to get ahead of us to take someone we were eyeing which i know they be on sites like steelers depot spying (patriots )(ravens) because last yr i stayed on this site faithfully reading who fellow steelers fans thought we should pick and researched vids on them on everyone that caught my attention got picked by ravens or pats

  • Shannon Stephenson

He is one of the few guys in the first that maybe available to us in the 1st I like.

  • Melly

u might be right? lets put it this way…neither makes it to their 3rd Rd “comp” pick!

  • Chad H

I can agree TEs help get a team to a SB but TEs are not winning SBs and walking away with MVPs. Look at the Gronk/Hernandez combo. Heck Tony Gonzalez hasn’t been to the big show. That’s the point I’m making. Is Ebron 1st rd value? Yes. But didn’t the Giants beat the Patriots twice with defense? Do we need a couple more weapons on offense? Yes, but we have to put our defense 1st this year. If we get to 15 and he is the best value on the board take him and keep our figures crossed we get defense in the next 2 rds.

  • http://batman-news.com Gizzy

Kyle Fuller is a 2nd maybe 3rd round pick and he would be another nightmare too. He’s weak and cant cover not to mention slow… sorry. Steelers could get him in the 6 or 7 round, IMO

  • shawn

prob not .. possible Desir … but i think ur right … thats why i think we need to trade down to have a chance to pick up a decent 3rd rounder

  • shawn

    Yup !

  • shawn

he did do an admirable job … but in ur heart do u really trust him to start … or is it more likely that it would only be a matter of time before he starts getting burned regularly … he has the instincts and is a decent football player but just doesnt have the size n speed to be anything but a role player !

  • Melly

im all in for trading back…espec w/ no 3rd and them wasting a 4th on L.Jones last year! there are CBs and WRs in the 2nd or early 3rd that can help a lot!!!!

  • shawn

2nd and 3rd are MONSTER rounds … i wouldn’t mind trading back Twice .. and picking up as mud has we can in that round … but someone said that colbert has only done that once … if thats true then are chances are mighty slim unfortunately !
