Sports Illustrated Draftnik Has Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert Falling To Steelers In Latest Mock Draft

Now that the national media draftniks are back home from covering the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, the newest set of mock drafts are starting role in. Earlier today, Rob Rang and Dane Brugler of CBS Sports both released their post combine mocks of the first-round of the 2014 NFL Draft and now Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated has released his.

In his latest educated guess, Burke has the Pittsburgh Steelers selecting Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert with the 15th overall selection.

Burke writes:

Gilbert’s combine showing — a sub-4.4 40, among other things — could force some team’s hand in the top 10 (Detroit?) Or it could force Pittsburgh, Dallas or others to consider trading up for him. Pittsburgh has to get better at the CB spot given Ike Taylor’s descent into mediocrity. Gilbert could be a shutdown guy at the next level.

If the draft board was to ultimately play out the way the way Burke has it going, Gilbert certainly would be enticing for the Steelers, who are sure to covet a cornerback in the early rounds of the May draft.

According to his mock, Burke has wide receivers Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans being long gone by the time the Steelers turn to pick comes around, and he also has cornerback Darqueze Dennard and safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix being gone by the 12th overall selection.

So is Burke off his rocker here? What chances to you give Gilbert dropping to the Steelers at 15?

  • Aric Brown

No way gilbert makes it past detroit

  • Jollyrob68

I dont think Gilbert will be there at 15 but if he is Snatch him up. If they’re ( Evans,Gilbert,Dennard,Ha Ha) all gone take Calvin PRyor or try to move back and get more picks.

  • steeltown

    4.37… enough said

  • Bill Sechrengost

It really would be a shock to see Gilbert fall to 15 and I don’t see the Steelers trading up to get him. They need every pick they have this year. The draft is still a long way away, so we’ll see what happens.

  • Kenneth Wilt

It is really interesting to watch the mocks develop. I have seen so many that have Gilbert going to the Lions. I have seen so many that have Evans going to the Lions. Ironically, in almost every one of those, the player NOT selected by the Lions….comes to us. It is looking more and more like this could potentially happen. Ike and Cotchery may play the largest role in determining which of those I hope for….Cotchery more so than Ike.

I am in this position….I want a WR and a CB in the first 2 rounds at the moment. I want CB first, as I truly believe we need 2 CBs and we can get another later in the draft. That being said if Sanders and Cotchery both resigned, I would then switch the need to TE and go CB then TE.

I have our first 4 pics as CB, CB, S, and WR, in no particular order.

  • cp72

I think I am in the minority here but I don’t see it with Pryor. I can get Buchanan, Brooks, Jimmy Ward all after round one. I think it would be a mistake to reach of a safety. There is quality there for at least 3 rounds. Any safety we draft isn’t gonna play much this year and possibly next year depending on what they decide to do with Troy.

  • Iron Cadet

Don’t jinx it guys! There’s no way he falls!

  • Jeff

4.35 and 20 reps on the bench…. This guy is a stud

  • Richie

    Dquell Jackson released by Browns?????

  • Addison

I don’t know why any one would want to waste top picks on cornerback. No cornerback is going to keep a man covered for 5 seconds. Ask Brady we have no pass rush for the last 3 years. Top pass rusher if any fall or best WR. They need to rely on the offense to wins some games next year. I know it’s easier said then done and I’m just an onlooker

  • I think he’ll be gone but I’ll give it a 10-15% chance just because the draft can be unpredictable and maybe if one CB goes before the steelers pick it’s possible a team falls in love with another CB more than Gilbert because of scheme or other traits (even tho I think Gilbert can play in any scheme)
Look at the Raiders last year….everyone thought Dee Milliner would for sure be the 1st CB off the board this time last year until about a week or two before the draft and even than most still thought Milliner would be the first CB off the board. So I would give it a chance a slim 10-15% chance but still a chance….especially if 4 QBs somehow come off the board before us…which I think would be insane considering the QBs.

  • Ike Evans

I think its funny as hell that before the combine everyobodies like…nooooo justin gilbert at 15? thats high! i cant see any of these corners goin in the first round lol lol lol lol now its like I was saying this whole time…he may not even be there…heres the thing though…if sammy watkins or mike evans is there for Detroit then I dont think they pass on WR so he MAY fall to us UNLESS….tennessee snakes us….
Heres the thing no one is talking about that had me intrigued when i did my first mock draft….what if tennessee takes justin gilbert and Anthony Barr is there at 15 somehow? do we draft another OLB in the first?

  • Ike Evans

If sammy or Mike evans is there…they might

  • I was thinking the same thing about how others thought there were no CBs worthy of a top pick…..I even saw a person or two say there were none worthy of a 1st rd period lol.

  • Toddy Bravo

I think there’s a great chance either Dennard or Gilbert is there at Pick 15. It wouldn’t shock me to see WR Mike Evans drop to 15 either. I think it’s a lock that Marquise Lee will be there, so there will be a top WR available if we choose to go that route. My choice would be 1) CB Dennard or Gilbert, 2) WR Jordan Mathews or Donte Moncrief, 3) FS Terrence Brooks.

  • Kareem Daniels

Dennard may have run fast enough to make people who listed him as the #1 corner take him first. Remember, they are saying people who shouldn’t last as long will be going later in the draft

  • westcoasteeler

Much like the last two years, it’ll be fun to see who falls to us. I really don’t think we need to trade up to get someone quality, that COULD possibly come in their first year and contribute. And that’s the only thing I’m having doubts on. We need a player to come in and play their first year, and the way DL does his thing on defense, they don’t start. If that doesn’t change then we should …gulp…go offense with the #15 pick.

  • Dennis Nevinsky

After running a 4.4/40, Terrence Brooks won’t be there for the Steelers in the 3rd round.

  • Douglas Andrews

Don’t see him making it out of the top 10.

  • Rob H

I know I sound like “Captain Obvious” here, but so much is going to happen between now and the draft, FA and roster cuts will change teams needs, pro days will move guys up and down the board again, etc. My own mind keeps changing as to who I’d like to see them take, I guess it doesn’t hurt to have fun with the scenarios though.

  • Callentown

None. But he would be my first choice at this point with players who may at least make it to the 10th overall pick.

Pryor is a grown ass man. Our defense is soft.

Because he’s probably the best player on the board. The best pass rushers will be long gone.

Yeah, take him. Obviously a position of need.

  • Aric Brown

I wouldnt mind trading back to the end of the first and taking Pryor… but at 15th overall I think that would be a huge reach

  • Shannon Stephenson

I like Gilbert…I think it would be a good pick.

  • Shannon Stephenson

it would be tough to pass up Barr.

  • CrazyTerry

If he falls, ;let’s hope it’s not for a good reason. I am no longer enthused about these steals after the way Jarvis Jones fell to us supposedly not because of talent but his spinal condition

  • David OBIE!

I don’t think that Evans or Gilbert will make to 15
wide receivers that will be available might include Kelvin Benjamin – Marquis Lee
I think that Jordon Mathews stock will rise to the first round after combine week
There are five good corners available in round 2
Marcus Robertson – Louchiez Purifoy – Kyle Fuller – Jason Verrett _ Bradley Roby
one or two of these will be there when we draft
If we do get a CB in round 1 round 2 receivers might include
Allen Robinson – Martavis Bryant – DeVante Adams
    I would draft a DT in round 3c: A safety in 4 : O line in 5 or 5c

  • David OBIE!

trade down scenario’s that I would like to see happen
    we need our #3 back

    Miami = Back 4 receive #19 (1) and #81 (3)
    Arizona = Back 5 receive #20 (1) , #84 (3)
    Green Bay = Back 6 receive (21 (1) , #85 (3) ,#117 (4)

  • steelster

worilds plays a big role also. I would like them to pick gilbert and then van noy in the second. A good wr will fall to them at the end of the third.

  • AMTsteelers

Sort of agree with you here. Seeing Pryor once this year in person I wasn’t overly impressed 3 tackles on the day and this was against 2-10 Temple. I’m probably wrong but just observations from that day

  • shawn

would definitely be surprised if he was there !

  • shawn

Ya .. NO WAY would they trade up to gamble on him …. NO WAY !

  • shawn

I would be on board with that !

  • Caesar

This was actually a two round mock that Burke did. He had the Steelers doubling up on secondary with S Deone Buchanon in rd. 2. In his mock, Troy Nicklas, Martavis Bryant, CJ Fiedorowicz, and Chris Borland were are still available and would be better options to me if we went CB in round 1.

  • Kenneth Wilt

Don’t agree. Either Woodley or Worilds are going to be here. We won’t lose both.

  • Bob Klymowich

Think he will be there at 15.I would take him. Excellent cover, long arms, speed ( what a concept, speed in the Steeler secondary ) & punt & KO Returns!
If not, there is a very real scenario that Woodley is cut ( bout time ) and we lose Worilds. This being the case, Dee Ford could be the pick. Ford & Jones, WOW. Two studs, what a duo. Second RD. Allen Robinson & 3rd RD Shamar Stephen, 6”5″ 315lbs. at DT.

  • tim

that doesn’t necessarily mean that prior had a bad game with three tackles, that may have just meant their front seven dominated the game possibly, idk cuz I didn’t see the game
