2014 NFL Combine Results: Defensive Backs

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • steeltown

Is it sad that I would welcome any of the names above…

Think I’d also add Deone Bucannon to the Safety list

  • blackandgoldBullion

Love Gilbert, but if SJB could be had in the 3rd, that would also be great, as 2nd round would not represent great value. But could SJB be that good? The tougher questions are can we find a 3rd or 4th round guy that could be a future starter?

  • steeltown

Kenny Ladler and Pierre Desir come to mind when discussing 3rd-4th Rd prospects that I like

  • Steelers12328882

Gilbert, Dennard and Fuller just nailed their 40 times. If we don’t go WR in the 1st then I’d love either one of these guys. Gilbert is my pick tho, so I hope he makes it to 15.

  • Superdriller316

These guys are “PICKIN ‘EM UP AND PUTTIN ‘EM DOWN”

  • dkoy85

I wonder where Fuller will go. I had hopes of getting him with our #2 pick but it looks like he’s going to make it into the 1st. A trade back scenario in the 1st would still represent good value IMO. I really like the kid.

  • Caesar

I’ve been wondering Jean-Baptiste keeps getting overlooked here. He seems about on par with Desir, who has gotten a fair bit of attention. I think either of them, or Bashaud Breeland would make nice later CB pickups, and I wouldn’t at all mind a draft with a first round CB like Gilbert or Dennard and one these other guys later if they are there in round 3, which is seeming increasingly doubtful.

  • steeltown

Agreed.. would like a 1st and 3rd/4th spent on the secondary

  • steeltown

Pending what his ‘official’ time will be, Gilbert might be gone by 15

  • shawn

i would take early, mid and late round picks … Boston & Dowling are good value at the end of the draft … like Boston a lot … not overly fast but can play

  • Alan Felicia

    Justin Gilbert unofficial 40 time – 4.35, 4.38.
Lookout for the other big Corner – Keith McGill: 6’3, 211 lbs from Utah. According to CBS Sports, played alot of press coverage, compared to Jean-Baptiste, McGill has longer arms (KM-33 1/4, SJB-32 3/8) and bigger hands (10-1/4, SJB 8-5/8).

  • blackandgoldBullion

Wow! Kyle Fuller sees the ball well, high points beautifully.

  • tim

Pierres’ name has come up ALOT as far as CB’s that the Steelers may look at. This is a weird draft for us cuz there may not be anyone worth drafting #1 at 15 and give them that type of money but theres plenty of 3+ rd players of worth….I wonder if its worth trading or #1 pick for a ready to play player/CB…then continue with pick #2 etc…just a thought…..

  • grw1960

Ya , Gibert seems to having a good combine so far. 18 reps of 225

  • cp72

It’s nice to think there is some good depth at corner so we don’t have to force one if Gilbert is gone. We can take Mike Evans or CJ Mosley if they slip and still find a few high quality corners in the second thru 4th round.

  • James Kling

Depot has 20 listed for Gilbert. And he has very long arms, 33″.

  • shawn

McGill is worthless … dont like anything in his game but his size … Pass

  • steeltown

We need speed in the secondary

  • george

Gilbert and Dixon had some impressive number in 40 and 225 reps!

  • Alan Felicia

    Just ran a 4.47, faster than Desir (4.52) and Jean-Baptiste (4.53).
Sorry you’re not a fan but I think he may be a value pick at round 4 or 5.

  • steeltown

That’s pretty impressive speed for his size

  • StarSpangledSteeler

It’s amazing to think back on Troy Polamalu’s numbers out of USC.

    4.3 forty
    43″ vertical
    206 pounds

  • cp72

I have liked Jason Verette for while. First game I saw him play was a bowl game against Michigan State. I was watching it on a replay because we just took Le’Veon. I kept thinking who is this little DB that keeps tackling our new 240 lb running back. It was Verette…he was a tough little SOB.

  • Alan Felicia

And, remember, longer arms and bigger hands than Jean-Baptiste. Looks like McGill is trying hard to erase his poor outing at the Senior Bowl.

  • Aric Brown

They showed Porter and Tomlin paying attention to Verrett

  • Aric Brown

that vertical is insane…wow… i never knew he was that athletic

  • Alan Felicia

Great 40 time but wished he was a little taller. Verette would be a nightmare matchup against the Bengals (Green 6’4, Sanu & Jones 6’2) and Baltimore (Smith 6’0, Brown 6’4, 6’2) receiving corps.

  • Aric Brown

    29 reps of 225 also

  • steeltown

..wish he was a little heavier too

  • shawn

I would totally trade our 1st round pick for a proven starting CB in the NFL … that is a no brainer !

  • shawn

I agree … but beyond speed we need playmakers … lets all say it together PLAYMAKERS !!!

  • shawn

watch his tape .. slowwwww no quickness … bad technique … ill pass not even as a UDFA

  • shawn

That is insane … didnt know his vertical was that high

  • John

They said Dennard is a press corner — so he does not fit for us. Not sure about Gilbert. Is there anyone else that is a corner that plays like the Steelers with top skills?

  • shawn

Dowling has plenty of game speed and is a ball hawk … needs to learn how to wrap up … Boston is a playmaker and always around the ball .. Deion is high on him as well … another florida kid … they are low risks as they are both at the bottom of the draft

  • shawn

I like SJB much better … i actually had to watch just a few minutes of tape of McGill against USC to see he had no game .. dilly dallies around, not decisive .. doesnt read plays well and has almost no quickness … his good 40 time must be purely long speed

  • http://batman-news.com steellife007

    A nice draft would be:

    1.15 Gilbert or Dennard
2.15 Jordan Matthews or Allen Robinson
3rd comp Pierre Desir or Stan Jean-Baptiste

  • shawn

Im not a Dennard fan in the 1st … at least Gilbert is a playmaker … Gilbert may be lacking in some areas but will put up plays and turnovers + fills the KR role … Dennard would be a definite upgrade over Gay but we need to hit on multiple DB picks and i think there is better value in the 2/3rd rounds

  • tim

Yeah but for who….and who would give one up thats not making crazy money?

  • lefnor

Breeland, Desir and Mitchell (he is very underrated) are perfect fits.
Verrett is small but his playing style is a lot like Curtis Brown’s. Not everyone looks like Ike Taylor in recent Steelers drafts.

  • shawn

Gilbert, Matthews, SJB would be a dream … but i would take that very much !

  • shawn

did the official times come in yet ?? i have a feeling there are going to be a lot of 4.5s … Dennards 4.4 was even with clowneys 4.5 … and thats about where i would put his game speed … mid 4.5 range

  • steeltown

At first glance it seems like Dennard and Gilbert might be gone regardless, Fuller seems like a potential good fit and Desir

  • Matt Manzo

That’s exactly what I’m thinking! I think it is a very real possibility too!

  • shawn

i was just saying … if it was an option … it would be a done deal

  • shawn

Well there are 2 DBs that should be off our board … Purifoy and Ladler … Purifoy … wow ..slow, small, weak …

  • shawn

Does anybody have any opinions on Ed Reynolds FS …. ?? i like his tape … his speed n quickness concern me .. which his combine times confirmed but big Stanford guys .. heyyy if he falls enough maybe …

  • Steelers12328882

Yeah, he’s officially fast. I don’t think he’ll be there at 15 either, and I believe there’s a small drop off in talent at CB after him. If Gilbert is gone I’m all for drafting the best available player.

  • shawn

Ladler is off the board … he looked like he was pulling a piano out there … shame has some game to him !

  • shawn

after watching the combine (with tape) i think it was fairly evident that Gilbert was hands down the best CB out there … lets face it all CBs not named Revis get burned on a regular basis … what I’m fairly certain is that Gilbert is a Play maker and will make plays plus he upgrades our KR big time … he’s the only CB worth a 1st round pick to me … SJB didnt disappoint … still think he’s worth a 3rd rounder … one of the few big guys I like after today

  • shawn

You still like McGill after watching his drills ??? He’s awful just like he was on tape … look like he’s moving in quick sand out there … way out of position not a CB by any stretch …

The reason Mayock kept talking about his size because there was nothing else positive to say …

  • LayDownTheHammer

Also, although everyone loves Gilbert for his speed and size and INT totals in a pass-happy conference with suboptimal QBs of recent, I think he’s overrated and too raw. Check out 2 scouting reports’ weaknesses on him and tell me you’re not concerned about his cover skills. Just because a guy has size and speed doesn’t mean he can cover (ask DVD about that one):

Gilbert can be physical and tough in press coverage, but his technique and footwork are inconsistent. He is too grabby in tight coverage, and his contact downfield will easily attract penalties at the next level. Gilbert can get himself in trouble when biting on fakes and pumps as he’s highly aggressive. He has a bit of a cover-corner mentality when it comes to run support. He flashes the competitive drive to fight through blocks and make the play but is often willing to allow teammates to make the play if they nearby. Gilbert will also lower his shoulder and lunge occasionally, missing tackles he shouldn’t.

He rarely played in press coverage. He didn’t show a good initial punch at the line of scrimmage and would fall behind the receiver almost instantly.
His hips can be stiff, causing change of direction to be lacking against more sudden athletes. Defending quick outs, deep comebacks and dig routes are a concern.
He has heavy feet, and it’s most evident on curl routes and double moves. Once Gilbert pivots, he has trouble changing direction without wasting multiple steps.
Doesn’t care at all about making a play against the run, often letting the blocker run him out of bounds. His tackle effort is also lackluster, as he goes for arm tackles or the big, highlight-reel hit.
He seems to lack recognition and anticipation skills while in zone coverage, as he is far too conservative. Gilbert allows quarterbacks to have easy underneath routes too often, and he needs to read and react to the quick routes instead of sitting on them.

  • shawn

NONE of the CBs wow me … but if we had to take a 1st round CB my choice would be Gilbert … he complements Cortez very much … will he get burned .. ya but no more than ike thats for sure, but he WILL make plays which we havent had in a LONG time … and i feel a lot better if Cortez locks down the #1 after hopefully a breakout season … if we did take Gilbert I would want a VERY Solid FS to even the secondary out !

  • shawn

Verret would be a major upgrade over Gay … but i think thats where his value best fits .. nickel slot …

  • tim

No I meant….or should have said, I wonder what team would trade with us and what player or pick/s?

  • shawn

not sure … everyone needs good DBs … i can’t think of a team that has too many of them lol … but i guess they could shop that deal if they wanted !
