Now that the Pittsburgh Steelers have lost both Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery during the free agent signing period, their wide receiver depth chart is pretty much nonexistent. Now, not only will the team have to draft one wide receiver in May, they might have to double dip at the position.
With all due respect to the Derek Moye and Justin Brown fans that read this, neither has given any indication that they can be long-term solutions for the Steelers at the wide receiver position. Yes, both are tall, but that’s pretty much the end to their upsides. In addition, neither has shown that they can be solid contributors on special teams and that’s a must for fourth and fifth string wide receivers on the Steelers.
Speaking of special teams, unless the Steelers intend on having Antonio Brown return punts again this coming season, they would be smart to draft at least one wide receiver that specializes in doing that, if they don’t add one via free agency that can handle that job.
The last time the Steelers double dipped at the wide receiver position during a draft was just last season when Brown and Markus Wheaton were selected. Before that it was 2010 when they nabbed both Sanders and Brown in the third and sixth round respectively. Brown ended up being a steal and the Steelers could certainly use another late-round gem like him this year to go along with an early-round instant contributor.
