Buccaneers Release CB Darrelle Revis After Just One Season

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were hoping they could trade cornerback Darrelle Revis, but after failing to find a team willing to take on his $16 million base salary he is scheduled to earn in 2014, they announced on Wednesday he will be released.

Revis is still the best cornerback in the league at 28 years of age and several teams will surely be looking to sign him following his release. Speculation is starting to mount that the New England Patriots could have serious interest in the University of Pittsburgh product after losing unrestricted free agent cornerback Aqib Talib to the Denver Broncos on Wednesday.

For those of you wanting the Pittsburgh Steelers to sign Revis, that’s very unlikely to happen based on the money the local product will demand. The Steelers are currently roughly $5 million under the salary cap after the signing of free agent safety Mike Mitchell on Tuesday in addition to them re-signing a few of their own unrestricted free agents on Wednesday.

During his one season in Tampa Bay, Revis recorded 50 combined tackles to go along with two interceptions and 11 official passes defensed. According to Pro Football Focus, he was thrown at 64 times in 2013 and allowed just 34 receptions.
