CBS Sports Draftniks Both Have Steelers Drafting Defensive Backs In Latest Mock Drafts

It’s Monday and CBS Sports draftniks Rob Rang and Dane Brugler have both released their latest mocks of the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft as we enter week two of the new league year.

For Rang, he has the Pittsburgh Steelers selecting Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, while Brugler has Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard going to the Steel City with the 15th overall selection.

Rang writes:

With age and bloated contracts catching up to the Steelers, there could be sweeping changes in Pittsburgh, especially in the secondary. Fluid and instinctive, Clinton-Dix could provide an eraser in the deep middle to patch up holes quickly.

Brugler writes:

The Steelers have several needs on defense and although they usually address the cornerback position in the middle rounds, Dennard might be too attractive to pass up with this pick. Both general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin were present at his on-campus pro day last week.

Somebody should probably let Rang know that the Steelers signed former Carolina Panthers safety Mike Mitchell on day one of free agency. I’m pretty shocked to see him with a safety going to the Steelers in round one.

As for Brugler, I can see where his head is at with his selection of Dennard, but with Texas A&M wide receiver Mike Evans also still on the board in his mock, that might be a tough decision for the Steelers to make.

Chime in with your thoughts on both these mocks in the comments below.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • William Bigelow

I would prefer Gilbert over Dennard, but it will be hard to pass on Evans if he’s still available @ 15. Guess we’ll just have to wait & see ….

  • steeltown

What a ridiculous guess by Rob Rang, Safety really? with Polamalu, S.Thomas, Mitchell and Will Allen on roster and he thinks the Steelers will take a Safety 15th overall? ….madness

I really think it comes down to either the CBs Dennard/Gilbert (if available) or Mike Evans

  • Jason White

Personally I have become very high on Stanley Jean-Baptiste. If they could get him in the 2nd or 3rd I’d be happy as hell. Ebron in the first and Jean-Baptiste in the second would be nice.

  • Justin Barlow

Assuming that we could get our hands on Jordan Matthews in R2, id prefer Dennard here. The complication, however is thatvwe need depth at corner and a starter at WR, so WR could take precedence.

  • Jason White

I did my final 1st round mock last night and I have Gilbert(Lions at 10), Dennard(Titans at 11) and Evans(Rams at 13) all three off the board at 15. So I actually have Ebron going to the Steelers at 15. I’m hopeful but I’m not holding my breath lol. I’ve been working on my final 7 round mock for the Steelers.

  • ApexSteel

All I know about this draft is that we can’t do anymore of this “best player available” shit. It doesn’t work and it hasn’t worked in years. Draft players that we need. No more Landry Jones types in the 4th round because they were at the top of the board.

  • Paddy

    It will be NIX ND

  • steeltown

If those 3players are gone, Ebron would be my next choice

  • dkoy85

What if they get Carrington? Still think it will be Nix?

  • Jollyrob68

Allen is stopgap insurance and Troy’s. extension was out of respect. It’s a good pick but not realistic with Evans on the board.

  • steeltown

    Not at 15th overall

  • Jason White

That would mean passing up on some top talent for a 2 down player. Just can’t see it happening at 15.

  • Jollyrob68

Dennard is a Great pick but hard to pass on Mike Evans if he’s on the board

  • steeltown

We just signed a FS that will hopefully hold down that position for the foreseeable future, that would be an ill advised selection at this point in time, especially needing CB, WR and DL badly

  • OIF3gunner

At 15 I want a corner…if the top two are gone…then I want a badass DE! If there isn’t one “worthy” of the 15 spot, WR.

  • Bob

I don’t like the idea of Pitt taking a receiver in round 1 for the simple reason that, if the player DOES live up to a 1st round pick expectations, he will be gone in 3-4 years. I’d much prefer Moncreif in the second than Evans in the 1st.

  • Jason White

I told Alex Kozora on twitter last night whose also high on Ebron that Ebron is an impact player who would make an immediate impact for the Steelers and that I wish the Steelers would see this instead of passing on a player like him just to have a team like Baltimore take him and then they would have to deal with being abused by him. I’d rather the Steelers be the ones doing the abusing for once.

  • mlc43

Ha ha Clinton Dix…Haha…why would we do that. Ok…I had too much fun with that sentence.

  • ApexSteel

That makes absolutely no sense at all…

  • Paddy

Yes I do because they don’t have a credible nose tackle and LeBeau knows it

  • Paddy

They will probably trade down to 23 and pick up a pick or two.

  • Eric MacLaurin

    Allen and Troy?

  • Bob

Pitt does not pay top price for receivers, better to spend your 1st rounders on a position you will be willing to pay after their 1st contract.

  • Paddy

I’m not in favor of Nix at 15 but they need a lot of players and to trade down would give them more picks to perhaps trade up in later rounds.

  • ApexSteel

We spend a great deal of defensive snaps in sub packages regardless. We shouldn’t waste a pick on a nose tackle when we play alot of nickle regardless.

  • Wayne Darby

I can’t see them taking a safety in the first round with the recent signing of Mitchell but CB could be an early round option but not my preference. Evans or Ebron are my first preferences but may be gone by then.

  • steeltown

If we trade back, I’d take Hageman or Fuller

  • Nolrog

Why does Rang have us picking Dix? They addressed the safety problem with the signing the other day.

  • ApexSteel

So you’re saying forgo a better player because they might play too well for us to bring them back? That’s ridiculous. And believe it or not we do pay receivers for production. Like when we paid AB 42.5 mil and when we offered Wallace 50 mil. It’s not that we don’t it’s that we can’t, but in 3-4 years we’ll definitely have the money to.

  • Jason White

I know a lot of people are really high on Mike Evans. Personally I think Eric Ebron gives you better nightmare-ish matchups than Evans. If you come out with Brown, Wheaton and Evans teams will bring out their nickel/dime packages. If you bring out Brown, Wheaton in a two TE set with Miller and Ebron teams will have to respect that formation as a run formation and if they call your bluff and bring out a sub package then you line up and run it on them. If they bring out a base package then put Ebron in the slot or out wide and run the no huddle. Ben will think he died and gone to Disney Land. Ebron is just a beast and a matchup nightmare. Evans is good and I wouldn’t complain about that pick but I prefer Ebron.

  • Biggie

I definitely can see us taking Gilbert or Dennard with our pick at 15 however I think Gilbert will be gone to Detroit early on, leaving Dennard. I don’t see Evans making it to us either with the Bills and Rams being the two most obvious teams but if somehow Dennard and Evans are there Evans will by far be the best player available, we can address CB in Rd 2. Safety shouldn’t even be an option for us in Rd1, first of all I don’t think either safety Haha or Pryor are worthy of the 15 spot, secondly with recent signing of Mitchel and resigning of W. Allen and Troy, along with Thomas there, Safety is no longer a need unless they look later in the draft.

  • Johnny HammerSticks

I think it would be far too difficult to pass up a talent like Evans. I know Ben taking a beating a more a correlation of OL/holding on to the ball, but a 6’5 threat roaming the field tends to help ANY passer. I like both, I feel Gilbert and Dennard have tremendous upside and can add a huge boost to the secondary. I feel like at this point its a pick’em. If a top 3 OT, Evans, Gilbert/Dennard, Ebron, and I know many don’t think so but Mosley is legitimate for ILB are there, they pick whomever is higher on their board.

  • Jason White

I am so damn glad Wallace didn’t take that 50 million.

  • Bob

No, I’m saying take a player that is just as good at another position in round 1, use your 2s and 3s for the positions you know the market will drive up the price on and you won’t want to match.
As to our ” definitely hav[ing] the money to” behave any differently than the FO has done business in the past is at least yet to be proven and not actually likely. Yes, there will be more cap, but that will drive the price for labor up as well. In the long term, it’s a wash

  • Will Hammer

if these players are off the board the steelers should trade down .. Gilbert- Denard -Evans .

  • ApexSteel

You understand that there’s no pay scale after a rookie contract right? Just because we draft someone in the second round doesn’t mean that they’ll get less money than a first round pick. You get paid based off of how you produce.

  • westcoasteeler

I was about to write exactly this. We’d HAVE to go with Evans. He could help now. I’m hoping for Gilbert. But can’t find any scenario where that happens…

  • Steve

Are you related to Bill or Jim White?

  • Steelers58

People wake up. We should take nix. But not at 15 . If we can drop back to 19 or 20 I would take nix then move McClendon to end. The steelers used to dominate the line of scrimmage. We need to get back to doing that. On defense it all starts up front. Especially at nt

  • PA2AK

I get what you are saying….but I still don’t know who’s board Landry Jones was at the top of in the 4th round last year.

  • Derick L Young

Hmmm if Evans and Dennard are on the board… dang that IS a tough one. I would not be disappointed with either pick.

  • PA2AK

this is very true. given the Steelers ability to draft solid WR in late rounds, knowing what we have in Brown, good potential that Wheaton will contribute, potential FA signing, Moye for depth…is it really necessary to go WR in round 1? Brown exploded after his rookie year of…next to nothing and Wheaton is putting in the time from what I hear. Will be a fun/agonizing draft to watch for sure!

  • srdan

    receiver contracts = CB contracts

  • Babybull

Why is everybody cought up in you haft to be tall to be good WR B.I.G spells big not bad before it’s over mark my words M Lee going to be best rec to come out of draft.I watch tape on Evans couldn’t get open unless. JM scrambled around a lot give me lee any day over Evans it’s the system he plays in Ryan swoop had same numbers year before what happen with him it’s the system if you skip over him for Evans we will regret it for years to come

  • ApexSteel

According to our best player available strategy he was on top of ours.

  • Babybull

If nix is what we need then take him can’t worry about if he’s 15th our 20th there’s no more huge rookie contracts anymore so get what we need where ever he’s at in draft.

  • PA2AK

haha i know…unfortunately. what I meant was no one else in the NFL or us armchair qb’s had Landry Jones at the top in the 4th.

  • PA2AK

What the Steelers need to be concerned with is drafting players that they see as major contributors within their first two years…regardless of position. They got caught up in ‘hey these guys took us to the Super Bowl this year, why not stick with them for the next few’. Some of the vets they hung onto limited growth of the young guys until we HAD to let them go. Get them in the lineup by year two, sign them to an extension after year 3 if they are worth it or let em go. it’s a young man’s league. if they want a massive contract like Wallace…let them move along. If they want to play and get paid well…within reason…keep em. (i.e. Wallace vs. Brown).

Their problems with the cap haven’t come from one position or the other, but instead from giving big contracts to every veteran on the team in fear of having to result to the people they drafted. (part bad drafts/part not getting them playing time and putting the responsibility on them early enough). There were some really good folks we drafted…just can’t pay them after one year of production while you have a bunch of bloated contracts tied up in geriatrics.

  • Babybull

Makes no diff seems like fheir not paying anybody

  • Leon Mcnair

i do not want a TE at 15 for what ? where we can get a wr steelers dont copy cat they relly need to get a Cb they have the future safties now get 2 corners gilbert and jean batiste and i will be happy

  • blackandgoldBullion

A 7 round mock…… I will buy you a beer if you get 15% correct.

  • blackandgoldBullion

I have heard most mocks place SJB in the 3rd or even 4th round. I would love him in the 3rd but would not pick him in the 2nd.

  • blackandgoldBullion

I have been saying Ebron is the nightmare matchup the opposition would fear. And you are doing a great job of validating my argument. Thanks.

  • tcirish53@gmail.com

I’m not surprised. None of the national guys at the big web sites seem to know what we need – look how long they had us taking Nix at #15.
We really need to go CB in round 1 but if BOTH Gilbert and Dennard are gone then I would say Evans (don’t think that scenario will occur though).
Then Tomlin/LeBeau need to work up a plan whereby the CB taken in the draft actually PLAYS other than on special teams!!! Can’t let this guy rot for 3 years a la Heyward.
Start platooning him with Ike and let him get his feet wet that way.

  • Jazz

Troy P. is done, lets not even factor him into the equation. The reason they should pass up on a Safety in RD #1 is because they just signed Mike Mitchell. Gilbert, Evans or Dennard? If all three are there, that would be a tough decision to make. Especially if Cotchery signs elsewhere. Defense has and will always win Championships. If Gilbert is there, you have to take him. If it was between Evans and Dennard, I would take Evans.

  • Jazz

A Tight End at #15? I would trade down and pick up an additional 3rd and possibly 4th. A Tight End that high? I can’t see them doing that unless they really feel as though he’s the best player available. I just can’t sit here and say Ebron is the 15th Best Player in the Draft.

  • Jason White

Big receivers and more so in my opinion tall, fast, athletic pass catching TEs create ridiculously uneven matchups for the offense. Shorter guys no matter how good they are they are not physically imposing. We have good shorter WRs in Brown and hopefully Wheaton. We need a compliment to those guys.

  • Jason White

Lol I had one pick right last year. It was Vince Willians in the 6th. When I am done with this years I will share it in the comment section of Dave’s next mock draft.

  • blackandgoldBullion

That’s funny. At least you admit it.

  • Jason White

In 2012 I did a mock of the 1st round and had 14 picks right. Last year I think it was only 8 or 9 I had correct. Beyond the 1st round it is nearly impossible to predict.

  • alex

yes, you guys seem both right…

we really need Evans for immediate offensive impact, and Lebaeu can survive with what he has in his backfield with Mitchell starting, Shark available for the nickle, and Allen as depth…

  • alex

a chance to get a player like Evans for four years with Ben is his prime, i would take, says Yoda!

  • kamil

I agree db round 1, second round martavious bryant or donte moncrief or kelvin benjamin round 3 josh mauro from stanford

  • kamil

Im a real big fan of of baptiste…

  • kamil

I kno right!! The safety class next year will be good again..we adressed it with shamarko and Mitchell, coming from a college football junkie lol

  • Babybull

Like sweed like plex we got big guys that tomlin didn’t even dress Seattle didn’t have big rec an they won Super Bowl I’m not sold on all this u got to have big rec stuff had a chance last year to get Allen I think it’s just poor drafting on colberts part
