Chargers Free Agent NT Cam Thomas To Visit Steelers On Friday

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, San Diego Chargers unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Cam Thomas will visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday.

At 6’04″, 330 pounds, Thomas has played well at times at nose tackle for the Chargers since being drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of North Carolina. Last year, however, he was benched midway through the season and replaced in the starting lineup by Sean Lissemore.

Should the Steelers wind up signing Thomas, Steve McLendon would more than likely be moved out to defensive end.

The Steelers have already lost Ziggy Hood and Al Woods during the free agency signing period and they need to start replacing them.

Idk what to think of this…last year he was benched for playing poorly n replaced….I hope hes not lazy but I have faith in our front office….hopefully he wasnt the last NT on their FA list!

keep em coming #steelers.. sign some folks…

Don’t Understand Their Thinking Letting All Their D Lineman Walk. This Guy Isn’t The Answer. Depth At best

  • Matt Manzo

Sounds like consistency and effort issues might make him somewhat cheaper?
I don’t assume he’d start at NT with Big Mac shifting over but I could be wrong? I’d like to see someone like him and Big Mac in the middle on running plays!
Would he be a back up role player?

  • pat

Woodley just signed 2 yr deal max of 12 mil with raiders

  • 20Stoney

Best of luck to him. Hope he gets his health straightened out.

  • mlc43

While this isn’t exactly a splash piece of news, I can see the reasoning behind it. I’ll be curious to see what FA DL the Steelers wind up signing, because we know they’ll have to sign some.

  • mlc43

Is he playing NT? Just kidding…best of luck to the guy.

  • grw1960

    Bottom of the barrel type,
I wonder if they hoped to do more in FA and Worild’s new deal is holding them hostage

  • Will Hammer

    either were they ….

  • 804Stiller

I would rather see 90 at his natural position but only if this guy is solid. I don’t see anything saying so. Seems more like depth than anything. I hope we sign Carrington.

  • Jason

    true

  • PA2AK

kind of a strange comment. i guess you could be right, but just seems like a strange

  • Shannon Stephenson

Cam Thomas was an interesting prospect coming out of college. He has the talent but can Mitchell get it out of him?

  • cp72

This could work. Thomas run stuffer in the middle. McClendon instantly becomes a better run defender at defensive tackle than Hood. Heyward is going be a beast. Then sign Keisel as a nickel rusher that plays 15 to 20 snaps. One young guy in the draft to go with Arnfelt and Williams at that point you don’t have a bad rotation.

  • PA2AK

it’s not the second coming of the Steel Curtain…but it is a solution for a difficult problem this year. Gives them time to develop the rest and bring some better talent on board. I like the optimism, even if we are misguided!

  • mlc43

There! I like your positive thinking.

  • cp72

Without knowing what coach Munchak can do I personally think John Mitchell is the best position coach we have. If you take Ziggy out of the mix he has done an outstanding job developing guys.

  • grw1960

By signing his tag Worilds is guaranteed 9 plus million for this season. Evidently the Steelers haven’t offered as much as Worilds wants in a long term deal…… If they can’t come to an agreement,
Worilds cap hit this season isn’t lowered, The Steelers can’t sign anything but back ups,
With out restructuring some one elses contract and Worilds tries free agency again next season.

  • Rob

“Played well at times,” what a ringing endorsement. I like the mitchell signing, but aside from that it seems we are determined to fill our starting line-up with mediocrity. I don’t see how we are going to improve from last year when we are signing scrubs

  • shawn

why does everybody spew the same “i have faith in the front office” … it is clear after the last week that they have no idea or plan on what they are doing … and clearly are shooting from the hip at this point !

  • shawn

their is no understanding stupidity !

  • shawn

i agree it is bottom of the barrel

  • shawn

this clearly is not the answer !

  • shawn

delusional thinking more like it !

  • shawn

we surely are not going to improve if they keep this up … you said it … mediocrity !

  • Rob

You’ve got to wonder how the hell they didn’t see this coming.

  • Rob

Scrubs and refuse… While the patriots manage to somehow sign revis, we are playing around with practice squad fodder

  • mlc43

Shawn, bro, why are you always so negative? Are you a Pats fan that’s just trolling? We’ve had a couple rough years. If you aren’t in the AFCE you can’t expect any different. Cheer up, my friend. Things are just getting rolling.

  • shawn

Ok Ok … ill go along … things are going just peachy … maybe it will all work out …

I remember the 80s and 90s that was 20 long years … would not like to relive that !

  • shawn

you have a way with words !!!

  • mlc43

In the 80s we had 3 losing seasons and 4 playoff appearances. In the 90s we had 3 losing seasons and 6 playoff appearances with 1 SB appearance. This is what I’m talking about, even those decades weren’t that bad. Fans like Cleveland would love that record. We’re spoiled and sometimes being spoiled fosters pessimism. We’ll right this ship but it isn’t going to all be done in the first 3 days of Free Agency.

  • shawn

Its all relative … i guess Steeler Fans expect more than a winning season … !

  • PA2AK

I see. Don’t think Worilds will work out a long term deal before all is said and done? And I didn’t mean the bottom of the barrel comment was strange, but more that the Steelers wouldn’t have planned for having to deal with the price of worilds

  • cp72

Okay why? Don’t mind that you disagree, but would like to hear what you think is a better alternative.

  • shawn

I like your optimism … but apparently Thomas sucks … back up at best … how is that going to work ?

  • Shannon Stephenson

I am glad you see that. Mitchell is an great coach and he can make miracles but the question is more of does Cam want it so I was referring can Mitchell encourage Cam enough to want it.
