Draft Analyst Charles Davis Has MSU CB Darqueze Dennard Going To Steelers In Latest Mock Draft

NFL.com draft analyst Charles Davis has now released the latest version of his mock of the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and he has a cornerback going to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 15th overall selection.

This time around, Davis has Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard going to the Steelers as the second cornerback off the board behind Justin Gilbert of Oklahoma State

Davis writes:

Steelers would be excited to see the former Spartans star still available.

The pick certainly makes sense as cornerback is certainly a big need for the Steelers in this draft. At his recent Pro Day, Dennard met with Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin.

Now that the Steelers have signed safety Mike Mitchell, most of the national media mocks seem to be off of the safety bandwagon except for Rob Rang of CBS Sports, who in his recently released mock has the Steelers taking Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. In addition, the love fest of Notre Dame nose tackle Louis Nix III seems to be behind us as well.

Chime in again with your thoughts on Dennard in the comments below.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

The more I watch and read about Dennard, the more excited I get about him. He’s a very good corner and would look great in black and yellow. He’ll bring some more physicality to our secondary.

The best part is I haven’t seen a mock where he was mocked before our pick so, fingers crossed, he’ll be on the board when we pick.

I think Dennard is the most likely CB choice. I’ve always had a problem with believing Gilbert would be there for us. Still, he isn’t a bad 2nd option at all…more like he and Gilbert are 1a and 1b.

  • steelster

yes, in this mock eric ebron goes to the ravens.

  • steeltown

Funny thing is Dennard was the #1 rated CB before the combine, but Gilberts 40time and measurables put him over the top

  • mlc43

I’m a little surprised he didn’t run the 40 again at his pro day. That and how stiff he looked in drills is what hurt him at the combine.

  • steeltown

That’s good for us, in theory

  • steelster

Dennard doesn’t have a very high ceiling. I like ryan schazier because he has a really high ceiling and we can get a cb later.

  • mlc43

CBs being hard to predict, I like him better than most. I think Dennard will make a solid CB at the NFL level.

  • Craig Ressler

This is the pick I am beginning to root for. Things could change but if the draft was to start today this is who I would hope we pick.

  • RMSteeler

Wouldn’t mind the pick as I think the Steelers need a CB that is physical and good in press coverage. Hard to beat Manning and Brady without press on spread out 3 or 4 WR + catching TE. They eat up zone covers unless front 7 can get quick pressure on them. Not likely for that with current roster. Still, BPA at 1.15 if the unexpected top 10 player falls.

  • Shannon Stephenson

I just do not think Dennard fits our defense. He isnt a great zone corner he is a press corner which we do little of.

  • steelster

The steelers may be changing to press coverage now that they have Mitchell on the back end of the defense.

  • Douglas Andrews

I’d like to see more press coverage. Last year I couldn’t see how we got any turnovers playing CB’s 10yds off the ball

  • dkoy85

Perhaps they double dip? Which would be a good idea.

  • Shannon Stephenson

I do too but I do not run the defense.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Which if they do then the pick is fine. I am just stating the facts as of today.

  • Shannon Stephenson

    I love that quote.

  • steelster

Did he get that from tomlin?

  • cp72

We liked the black paint better but we couldn’t afford it…..

  • srdan

I get the high ceiling argument. But we pick hi ceiling DBs all the time (great athlehtes), and few of them stick.

  • srdan

I agree. The knocks on him were the same ones Joe Haden had. We need leadership and toughness in the secondary. He gives us that.

  • srdan

    I love that quote.

But I also think we should be stealing some things from other defenses. Like NE plays a 4/3 and a 3/4. We jsut let Ziggy walk, and if he excels in Jacksonville, I’ll be questioning why we didn’t run a few different looks up front to let him do what he is good at.

THen again, maybe they were doing it, and to the aveage fan (me) I can’t really tell.

  • steelster

    nice, a great post

  • tcirish53@gmail.com

Thank God the Nix thing is done; now watch us draft him, LOL!!!!!!

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

    Dont jinx us lol

  • Axe Skot

That was what Colbert said when he was asked, I think by Gerry Dulac, if the Steelers would pick a guy they thought fit the system over a more talented overall athlete.

  • c t s

for all you who think Gilberts 40 time make him better than dennard don’t know football. Yes, Gilbert is good and he has more bells n whistles as a returner and measurables and blah blah blah. BUT, Dennard is the best cover corner in this draft. There’s a reason that pre and POST combine, he’s still the number 1 DB on Mayocks/Casserly’s draft board of the position.
