Mitchell Excited About Opportunity To Play Alongside Polamalu

During his first five years in the league, new Pittsburgh Steelers safety Mike Mitchell hasn’t really had a teammate in the secondarys that he’s played in that could really mentor him and teach him from past experiences. Now that he’s in the Steel City, that has changed as he will at least get to play one season with Troy Polamalu and maybe even two or three.

“It’s going to be a great honor and learning experience,” Mitchell said about now having the opportunity to play with Polamalu. “Being a young guy out in Oakland I didn’t have an older player to learn from. Everything I have picked up has been on my own. I think learning from arguably the best player ever to play my position it’s only going to be good things from this experience. He is a great football player. I look forward to seeing how he works, practices and studies.

“I don’t know if I am going to be jumping over the line of scrimmage to make those types of crazy plays, but hopefully there are some things I can pick up from him that will one day make me a great player.”

Nobody expects Mitchell to do some of things that Polamalu does. What is expected, however, is that he works as hard as his new veteran leaping counterpart.

Mitchell considers himself a player that loves to study film and has a high football IQ. He comes of as very humble and should fit right in as a replacement for Ryan Clark. Along the way, he can help mentor Shamarko Thomas.

Someone should tell him “alongside” is a relative term. He will be playing behind him and running his ass off when Troy guesses wrong to prevent a touchdown.

  • Paul Hoover

    I have feeling he’s gonna be a beast !!

  • Paul Barracliffe

I think negative references to Troy should be banned from this site.

You’re missing my point. The true brilliance of Clark was he let Troy freelance and covered his backside when needed. 43 is playmaker the problem with that is there are going to be plays when you guess wrong. We can only hope Mitchell is adept at covering up the misses as well as Clark did. That’s not indiment of Troy as much as much as it is praise for Clark.

Gotta say I love his attitude so far … comes off very much as a team player !

Troys a Big Boy that can handle himself.

I wouldn’t mind a little more gambling on the part of the Steelers. When the front 7 is phenomenal, you can just play the standard D most of the time. When they are not what we have become accustomed to, then they should take a few more chances. Blitzes, CB’s taking a chance occasionally, Troy doing some crazy things.

I would take a few long TD against the D as long as there were many more sacks and turnovers.

Well…you got your share of the long TD’s last year. How did that work out for you???

Just listening to Mitchell’s press conference yesterday. Sounds like a high character guy, with a blue-collar work ethic. Think he will fit right in with the Steelers.

One could also make the argument that Troy’s presence made Clark the player he is. QB’s always say Troy is the one they make sure they identify pre-snap. That allows the other safety a certain degree of anonymity.

That’s not the way you posed the comment cp72. Your original comment came off as nothing more than a shot at Troy, which is exactly what it was.

  • RMSteeler

i can’t believe Troy made it through the season without injury enought to miss a game. That’s awfully impressive considering how much time he spent playing LB in the box against 300+ OL’s. Communication between MM and Troy will be the biggest adjustment for both. I hope they can get on the same page quickly. Haven’t heard how MM is in FB IQ. The ESP developed between Clark and Troy seemed great until last year.

  • cp72

Lol…okay. Your right I am a closet Troy hater.

  • steeltown

I’ve heard and read he’s a film room guy and takes pride in being prepared

  • Paul Barracliffe

cp72 you need to go back to Cleveland with your BS. Your obviously no kinda Steelers fan. Troy had 5! forced fumble last year.
