Rams Sign Bills Free Agent DL Alex Carrington

Buffalo Bills unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Alex Carrington has made his decision as to where he will play in 2014 as Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that he has come to terms with the St. Louis Rams.

Carrington, who visited with the Steelers several weeks ago, also visited with the Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns as well since the free agency signing period got underway.

Now that Carrington is no longer an option for the Steelers, they might be forced to re-sign Brett Keisel for one season if no other free agent defensive linemen fit their bill as being able to come in and start right away.

The Steelers lost Ziggy Hood and Al Woods early on in free agency and have only signed former San Diego Chargers defensive lineman Cam Thomas so far to fill that void.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

    BOO!!

  • steeltown

I think Keisel will be brought back for ONE more season now, it will afford them time to further groom Williams and Arnfelt and a possible soon to be rookie draft selection

  • METAL_HAMMER

That kind of sucks! I was hoping. Oh well. We’ll have to look elsewhere.

  • Jason Brant

I wonder if the Steelers are more confident with Arnfelt and Williams than everyone thinks.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Based on Colbert’s comments, he views this as a very deep 3-4 DE draft.

There are guys like Hageman and Tuitt early. Or Quarles and Urban semi-early. Or Clarke and Martin middle. Or Shemar Sephen and DeAndre Coleman late.

I like Carrington, but it may be better value to draft a young healthy DE for a rookie contract than risk the guaranteed money over a torn quad young veteran.

  • 804Stiller

“Say it ain’t so!” This was the only one left I thought we really needed but what can you do. Crazy he’d sign to be a back up. Unless, I’m missing something. Now, I guess our last bit of work is to sign a running back until Woodley’s money frees up.

  • stellarsfan

Why? With no visit, no starting role, and I can’t imagine they overpayed him.. bummer.

  • AzheDraven

I don’t get it. They should have offered a lot more if he wants to play for a team that probably will be 4th in their division. Or he likes that city. Anyway, I’m glad they can sign Da Beard for one last ride. Maybe he can help arnfelt or some new rookie to be a good player.

  • steeltown

CB and DL… very much a focus in this upcoming draft

  • Bill Sechrengost

That is disappointing, but not the end of the world. There are plenty of DL in the draft, but that means they will have a really young defensive line if Williams and Arnfelt wind up making the team along with at least one in the draft. I guess that would bode well for the future, though. I’m not sure Kiesel will be back. They probably won’t sign him until later, if they do. I don’t see any other team signing him.

  • T R

I am kinda glad he didn’t sign with us.. we can hopefully find a non injuried player to fill this need.. torn parts of the body tend to linger for his position since tackling is such a key..

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I’ve been thinking the same thing about Arnfelt.

    http://www.sippinonpurple.com/northwestern-wildcats-football/2013/3/6/4070606/northwestern-pro-day-nfl-draft-brian-mulroe-brian-arnfelt

The kid is about 6’5″, 305 pounds, with long arms. He runs a 4.81 forty and benches 38 reps. He is tall, long, fast, strong. What else do you want from a 3-4 DE? Technique? Well let’s get him on the field and teach him some.

Arnfelt reminds me a lot of Keisel. He should be able to give us some solid minutes.

  • 804Stiller

Yeah, I wonder too. With us down to like 1mil in cap room, had we already moved on from him? Truthfully, I would rather not have to restructure Timmons to sign anyone else. If we could pick up a RB, it might be best not to spend anymore until Woodley’s money frees up in June.

  • Matt Manzo

At least the wait is over! Now back to waiting on a RB!

  • cp72

Got feeling he’s gonna be a lot more Chris Hoke than Keisel.

  • SumnerYoung

Shouldnt have let Al Woods get away, but that’s that. Now lets draft and develop our own D-lineman. Arnfelt, Nick Williams are up next. Next man up, right!?!? A 2014 5 technique draft pick also should be brought in to compete. Let the best man win the job. Anyway, did we really need a guy who couldn’t cut it in Buffalo, and was only being courted by the Rams and Raiders?

  • SFIC

    Bummer

  • http://thereactionblog.com Michael Stickings

I was pretty enthusiastic about the Steelers signing Carrington, thinking he’d be a solid starter at DE, but as time has dragged on I’ve been developing more and more of a “whatever” mentality about it. The fact is, we don’t know what the Steelers offered him, what other teams offered him, if anything in both cases, and what the expectations were regarding starting/playing time. It may be that the Steelers just didn’t want him, but if they did and he picked the Rams anwyay, well, unless there was a huge pay difference it just means he didn’t want to play for us, and I’d rather not have someone like that on the team. Nothing against him, but we can move on.

  • pittsburghjoe

I hope they give Arnfelt or Williams the chance rather than Keisel. He has absolutely no upside and will stifle the growth of a young talented player.

  • Steelers12328882

I think that bumps DE to our #1 priority in the draft. I’m not saying we go DE in the 1st, but I think it’s more of a need then WR now.

  • John Hinton

And if this happens, you can change your Avi back to “The Beard” for one more year.

  • steelster

It will be interesting to hear what his contract is

  • Andrew Alberico

Really? Brown, Moore, and Wheaton? Will keep defensive coordinators quaking in their shoes.

  • RMSteeler

Liked him, but the shelves are pretty bare now. That will change after the draft and there are more cuts. More vets to be displaced by draftees to gain more cap space. If there’s a couple of good ones that could start, the process will beging again. If not, Keisel for another year and really let Arnfelt and Williams prove themselves in camp and preseason.

  • sean mcmartin

hmmm. wondering what the rams said to entice him to play for a non-playoff team in the nfc west? or what they paid him?

  • SFIC

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$

  • SFIC

Unfortunately, not the best year to draft a 34DE….maybe Tuitt if he falls to the 2nd Rd….after that, nobody really stands out.

  • Pete Johnson

Yeah we have about 6 “#1 priorities” right now we are in dire need of. Unfortunately we only have a couple top picks, not the 6 like we need.

  • sean mcmartin

yeah I guess most players only want the highest check.i get the short expiration dates on their careers.
older vets might care a little about playing for a playoff team..

  • Matt Manzo

That’s exactly what I was feeling! Thanx for typing it out so I didn’t have to!

  • Doug

    There’s a reason why Arnfelt wasn’t drafted.

  • Douglas Andrews

Bring back Da Beard…cheaper option and a stop gap. I’m glad we didn’t throw a lot of money at Carrington he was unproven as a starter for an entire season. Keisel is a nice option to have and maybe this would give one of the younger guys an opportunity to get more playing time sort of like a 2 man rotation with Keisel being the starter.

  • Paddy

Well Buffalo Cleveland Oakland and Pgh didn’t want him, what’s that tell ya

  • Milliken Steeler

and there was a reason silverback wasn’t drafted too then right?

  • steelster

    nothing

  • Tom

Is it too much to expect a rookie DE to play a lot in LeBeau’s complicated defense?

  • tcirish53@gmail.com

Draft that that NT in the 4th round, START him, move McClendon to DE, draft a good middle round DE in the draft. Bring Keisel back for one year.
    Done!

  • SFIC

Yes, it is. Lebeau’s system is very complicated.

  • SFIC

They all wanted him. He just went to the team that gave him the most $$$$$$$
    Plain and simple.

  • dkoy85

Or keisel drafted in the 7th

  • Steelers12328882

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic, or if you’re suggesting WR should be lower then #2 on the Steelers priority list. If the latter, then I’d say we’re obviously good with Brown, and Moore will do fine from the slot for a year or two, but Wheaton has a lot to prove and after those 3 there’s nothing. Cowher drafted WRs #1 four different times. It’s time for Tomlin to do the same, and after losing 113 catches 1,342 yards and 16 TDs of production from last year, this might be the year they do just that.

  • Steelers12328882

I know which means we’ll most likely have to reach for a player when we do pick the position.

  • SFIC

Aaron Smith was a late rd pick. Maybe we can find a gem later

  • Alan Felicia

The question is, will Keisel accept the veteran’s minimum salary?

  • steelster

He has already said he won’t play for the minimum. However, they can pay him more after the rookie draft class is signed.

  • steelster

Don’t get caught up in the lost production. Wheaton, Bell and miller, moore can make up for that. They do need another wr but it doesn’t have to come in the first round.

  • alex

y pay if nobody else wants him?!

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Any word on the contract details?

  • Josh Knepshield

I like how everyone wants this guy, but then when we don’t sign him, everyone says that he has to much injury concerns. Lol

  • Arthur Branch

Colbert has always been able to find good receivers after the 1st round. If there is a can’t miss CB in the first round the steelers have to take him.

  • steeltown

I will when/if he’s signed, but I think only for that week. I’m rockin Wheaton!

  • steeltown

If he wont accept 955K, then give him an even $1MIL

  • steeltown

I’m sure Keisel would enter the regular season as the starter, but I would think by seasons end we’ll know a little bit more about Cam Thomas and the young guys

  • http://thereactionblog.com Michael Stickings

    My pleasure, Matt.

  • Alan Felicia

Nope, would rather see Pittsburgh spend a little more on someone like Shaun Phillips or Robert Ayers (both are still available).

  • steeltown

Im pretty sure neither fits our scheme, Ayers could potentially play DE in a 3-4 but Phillips is far too small to play the position, he’s smaller than some of our LBs

  • Toddy Bravo

While we could certainly use a 1st Rd DE, I think that position is probably 4th on the list of needs behind CB, WR and RB. The signing of Cam Thomas to provide depth at DE speaks to the fact that the Steelers are sold on McClendon at NT (and not DE). That means McClendon and Heyward are 2 of the 3 starters on the D-Line. I’m very comfortable with that. The last spot will likely be a camp battle between Thomas, Nick Williams, Brian Arnfeldt and whoever we draft, with the losers being backups or Practice Squad. If we draft a DE in round 3 (comp) or lower, I think that provides enough competition for that last spot.

Basically, I just don’t think the DE situation is as dire as everyone says. Use rounds 1 and 2 on a CB and WR, then use the rest of the picks for depth at RB, DE, OLB and (another) CB.

  • Bradys_Dad

reminds me more of a stronger Aaron Smith – -wouldn’t that be a special player !

  • Toddy Bravo

Exactly what I was thinking. In addition to Arnfelt and Williams, don’t forget that Tomlin or Colbert (can’t recall which) said Cam Thomas was brought in to primarily play DE. Plus, we’ll almost certainly draft another one somewhere after round 2. Personally, I think that would be plenty of excellent competition for the open DE spot.

  • Steelers12328882

No, definitely not. I’m just suggesting the possibility is very high.

  • Steelers12328882

I respect your opinion, but at the CB and WR positions we have starters and at least one backup. The DEs you list were either benched last year or on the practice squad/IR for most of last year. It might not be dire, but Ziggy, Woods, Keisel > Thomas, Arnfelt, Williams. I’m a big Arnfelt fan tho, but I don’t think he’s even close to being starter ready.

  • Toddy Bravo

Point taken, man, but as Coach T recently said, young guys don’t stay the same. They generally improve. I expect Williams and especially Arnfelt to make big strides this year. I’m already pretty excited about the group and can’t wait to see who we draft to add to it.

  • Toddy Bravo

Willie Parker, James Harrison, Antonio Gates, John Randall, Priest Holmes, Kurt Warner, Warren Moon, etc., etc.
