Report: Bills Free Agent DE Alex Carrington To Visit Raiders, Rams Next Week

According to Ian Rapoport of, Buffalo Bills unrestricted free agent defensive end Alex Carrington has visits set up with Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams next week..

Carrington visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday and according to Rapoport, the meeting went well even though the Arkansas State product left unsigned. The two sides were reportedly to stay in touch with one another moving forward.

This news isn’t surprising as Carrington more than likely wants to shop around a little before making a final decision on where to play in 2014.

The Steelers are looking to add a free agent defensive end after losing Ziggy Hood and Al Woods during the first week of free agency. Carrington, if eventually signed, would likely start opposite Cameron Heyward in 2014 on the Steelers defensive line.

Sign this guy. Please, sign this guy.

But whatever. I would love to see Keisel back for one more year. He’s still got it.

  • Caesar

Well that’s over. Oakland has money that they HAVE to spend, so they will probably offer him money Pittsburgh can’t match.

  • William Bigelow

Yup …. Sucks, I really want him to sign with us, but I guess u can’t blame him for shopping around to determine his ‘worth’.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Yea that pretty much sums it up he will not be in black and gold this year

  • ApexSteel

So can we be real for a second and just say that isn’t gonna be our year? Too many holes to fill.

  • Josh Knepshield

He hasn’t been effective the last 2 years. Why do you think he still has it? Not judging, I just want to know if you know something I don’t.

  • DoctorNoah

    Looked as good as Ziggy…

  • falconsaftey43

Gotta agree with you there. Normally we’re looking to upgrade so spots. We can’t even field a team right now. Unless we have a stellar draft and they actually let the rookies play and they’re actually very good, it’s not looking like a good year.

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Im frustrated right now not because he will not be a steelers but the FO was selling us dreams that they were gonna be more involved in FA this yr but we are getting the same results i hope we go better than 8-8 this yr but as of right now its not looking good for us

  • sean mcmartin

Its just a business, and Tomlin , Colbert have a boss. They cannot be honest and let the fan base know the truth. They refuse to go in rebuilding mode and this is what you get. average talent and no money to sign playmakers. .so back to back to back average seasons. , The only good thing to come out of this is maybe tomlin will be finally let go. Say whatever to defend him. Cowher could get the most out of a player..He is a better coach.

  • sean mcmartin

And the Steelers have not had a good draft in awhile, and they don’t start rookies…Even fans that wear blinders have to be smart enough to see the lack of quality players they are signing..It will not be a good season.

  • Steelers12328882

OMG, just put McClendon back at DE and end this free agency misery. I’m so over these high priced vets. Let ‘em all pass by and lets nail this draft!

  • Callentown

This isn’t the end of the world. Personally, I would have preferred the team signed a player such as Linval Joseph as a NT and moved Mac out to DE. We could have afforded that move and this line would be complete.

There’s PLENTY of time to make this work. If we’re still in this situation in August, let’s talk. But even then, players get cut and are available.

  • AndyR34

I don’t mean to offend you personally, but that’s just stupid on so many levels!

  • Steelers12328882

What’s just stupid? Putting McClendon back at DE or the point about just filling these recent holes with rookies at positions like WR, RB and DL? Not offended, but if you’re gonna say something at least go into detail.

  • Melly

Don’t want to be a, DEBBIE DOWNER, but we are falling behind…and its only March!!! We all see Den, Indy, and NE reloading big time. Meanwhile, all of us get excited cuz they sign a Safety and a backup NT. I cant wait to see who our 3rd n 4th WRs are gonna be, and our other starting DE!!!!

  • Steelers12328882

I agree. At this point I think our best option at DE is McClendon. I mean that was his original position, wasn’t it? Isn’t his body type and technique better suited for the DE position? I don’t want Keisel back as a starter that’s for sure. Cam Thomas can play NT.

  • falconsaftey43

doesn’t really matter if he is at DE or NT. point is they only have two starter quality d linemen. Bottom line is QB and maybe Safety are the only positions that can be considered good to go. Every other position is lacking.

  • Steelers12328882

Well if we can’t find a starter at DE in free agency then it does matter. Point being that McClendon could be a solid starter for us at DE to go along with Heyward. Cam Thomas was benched last year, but he was a starter at NT before that. Maybe he can get back to that level.

  • mlc43

The sky is falling. The Rooney’s don’t care. The Front Office is a bunch of idiots. Fire Mike Tomlin because he has had back to back 500 seasons. We can’t field a team. We can’t draft…..oooooh wooeeee, our team is dead!!! They have no chance to compete.
Now, when looking at all those statements together I look like a freaking lunatic. However, these are all statements I’ve read in other peoples posts. Seriously folks, quit being so down on the team. At least wait until they put the team on the field for the preseason games, at least then you can actually say that guy played like crap instead of I THINK that guy will play like crap.

  • falconsaftey43

I guess that’s marginally better than starting Arnfelt at DE and McClendon at NT. Neither is very good though.

  • Steelers12328882

True. I’d love to have Arnfelt start at DE, but what do I know lol.

  • Steeler Fanatic

I can be as real as it comes when judging the FO, but Rome ain’t built in a day. It will take another year to wipe away more dead $$$ on the cap, improve the skill level and get younger. It is bull about Colbert’s draft history relative to the league. The Niners took a first round wideout that they traded, Seattle’s Bruce Irvin looks below average and Bellicheat gets a million picks to get patrick Chung, brandon Spikes and a slew of others that haven’t performed. We have lost guys from an 8-8 team. Cotchery would be a loss but he is not replaceable. Neither is Al Woods. Let the rest of free agency and the draft come together, then go from there.

  • Randy Neff

Did Carrington ever go to Cleveland for a visit? I don’t see where the opportunity to start in either Oakland or St Louis is better than the one the presents in Pittsburgh. Only Cleveland seems to be the real threat here.

  • Aharon Moyer

Madden has him rated at a 68 so there is probably other reasons to look onward. I say they fatten up Polamalu and put him at NT. His hair alone would block QB view. #troyhealthconcerns

  • Shannon Stephenson

    I have a bad feeling

  • Shannon Stephenson

    but thats no fun…lol

  • ApexSteel

We have nothing to go by except what they did last year and what the team looks like now and it’s perfectly natural to speculate about your team. Now being realistic it would take perfection for us to field a playoff team this year.

We need two wideouts, realistically two defensive ends, depth at ALL linebacker spots, a starting Corner, and a back up runningback. We’re looking at probably 8 draft picks so we’re going to need all of them to come in ready to play and contribute. Do you in all honesty see that happening?

  • Jay Jaber

Looked way better than ziggy. I think Bret Keisel has 1 year left in him

  • mlc43

I don’t believe it would take perfection for us to make the playoffs. You never know how new players will gel with one another. If I were absolutely pushed into giving a premature opinion, I would say we’re still a year away from seriously competing. I said 2 years last year, for the record. Still, things can happen between now and the start of the season that could change that. I’m willing to wait and reserve judgement until then.

  • angel

its not but oakland has lots of money.. lots of money and they think he could play better inside

  • Mark McHugh

I must confess I looked up his Madden rating as well. lol He’s actually a 75 with the online updated roster. :)

  • ApexSteel

It could. These are only pre draft observations, but seeing how our last few drafts have gone i wouldn’t count on a huge early impacts from our draft picks.

  • tim

How many years did it take Coach C to win a SB?? I also think he has better teams to work with…not rookie filled and one and/or two year guys like Coach T is dealing with…the Steelers will be FINE, it just will it be sooner rather than later?

  • Callentown

When I looked to see what McClendon played at Troy, it says defensive tackle. I can’t find their alignment listed but assume he played inside on a 4-3.

His body type is better suited for DE for us and he would be a force out there at 325.

  • Callentown

That’s great that you both looked him up on Madden. Love it..

  • Steelers12328882

    That’s what I figured. Now I’m offended.

  • Josh Knepshield

Ziggy had 2 things Keisel doesn’t, and those are durability and youth.
