Report: Jaguars Free Agent RB Maurice Jones-Drew Expected To Be Back On Thursday

Free agent running back Maurice Jones-Drew might not have left Pittsburgh after all.

While the longtime Jacksonville Jaguars running back was not signed after visiting with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday, Albert Breer of the NFL Network is now reporting that Jones-Drew will be back at the team’s facility on Thursday.

Breer did not have an update, however, on former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Lance Moore, who also visited with the Steelers on Wednesday. Moore, like Jones-Drew, left the facility on Wednesday unsigned, according to a Wednesday report by Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

I like mjd but ill love him for a cheap fair deal…I just hope he doesnt turn out like deuce Staley!!!!

  • Steve

Think I agree with bouchette on this one. Does MJD fit the team or is this a desperation sign, if indeed he signs? I like the idea but not sold on him. And why hasn’t anyone else showed interest in him?

  • Michael Pearce

I’d prefer MJD to Moore. Would be happy with MJD, Cotchery and Carrington.

  • tim

Still just talk until he signs……question is…is he visiting ANOTHER team THEN “coming back”? Cuz I won’t get my hopes up then IF he is…

  • Steeler Fanatic

MJD is a class act who is a good team guy and who has been healthy most of his career. Give him 200 carries and he can be productive. Why a desperation move? They still could bring back LSH. Why are we so concerned about finding a backup RB? There will be a dozen guys available after final cutdown. Now if we didn’t have a feature back, then that is an issue. The running back position doesn’t hold as much value as it was 10 years ago.

  • Derick L Young

HA! I said a similar thing referring to Deuce.

  • Derick L Young

what other teams have only 1 RB lol

  • Derick L Young

Is he a team guy? Kinda left his team out in the cold this past season.

  • Steelers12328882

Duce ran 192 times for 830 yards(4.3 avg) his first season with the Steelers. Only 1 td, but that’s cause Bettis had 13 tds that year. If we can get anything close to that out of MJD for one year I’d be ecstatic.

  • Craig Ressler

I hope he signs. He would be a good complement to Bell and can do everything our offense does with Bell (true three down back). If Bell would get hurt, I’d much rather have MJD than Dwyer, Redman, F. Jones, LSH, James Starks types.

  • RW

If you were an NFL superstar playing on a JV softball team, you might leave your team out in the cold too…

  • Matt Manzo

I still don’t consider the Jags a real team, at least recently. He did give them a lot of quality years. I think he got upset at the direction they were headed?

  • John A Stewart

    Deuce was a proud bum

  • John A Stewart

Just think of Felix Jones than you should be interested in MJD

  • Jollyrob68

Deuce was on fire until he shredded his Hammies.

  • John A Stewart

Team guy really he was the best guy on the team management just didn’t show him any respect.

  • John A Stewart

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Great if we can get him signed along with carrington and bring back cotch this offseason would be looking real nice for us then compliment that with some high quality draft picks and we’ll be moving in the right direction

  • mlc43

Back ups! BACK UPS!! Whatcha talkin ’bout man…it’s BACK UPS!!! Child please!!!

  • mlc43

Just kidding. Would love the signing and I’ll know he’ll be cheap because we are the Steelers and that’s what we do…cheap signings.

  • hchristi15

It may be harder than first thought to sign Carrington. NFL Insiders show on ESPN today named Carrington as the main free agent to follow from this point forward. They referenced him being the best available defensive lineman with a lot of upside. This alone makes me think that the Carrington camp is asking for more than what many teams were expecting.

  • JohnB

I think he could become a killer 3rd down back.

  • Justin Barlow

I think we need to pay it

  • hchristi15

I completely agree. Obviously I don’t know the current specifics on Carrington’s injury from this past season, but it cannot be that bad. It realy does seem as though Carrington has a ton of upside and would benefit even from from having Heyward on the other end. He seems like a Pittsburgh type lineman, and I would love to see him in the black and gold. I am surprised that we have not re-done Ben or Timmons to this point, considering some signings we should get done before the draft.

  • CW

MJD was coming off a serious injury the year before and still managed 804 yards rushing, 314 yards receiving, and 5 TDs on a team where almost no one took their quarterback as a threat and therefore loaded the front with eight men in the box more often than not.

Not a great season and probably why there is little interest in him this year, but as a backup to the starter he could be a great addition to the team if he can be brought in on a reasonable contract.

  • Adam Lambert

Great Post Man! I think he could maybe split with Bell if he works his ASS off..thus…giving them extra time in the long run with Bell…

  • Rene Lopez

Does anyone realize he would be our back up. Everyone acts like he would be our starter. This would be a great pick up and it would be a great tandem to have Bell and MJD..

  • Adam Lambert

Plus if He runs with a chip on his shoulders…Look Out!! Blocks like a Beast…Great Screen Man.. Runs People Over

  • 243546

The back up RB is only one hit away from becoming the starter. Bell missed 3 games last year, and was knocked out of another. A team needs to have quality depth behind their starters.

  • Madi

Thank you for reminding people of this. He was great for us for awhile.

  • mlc43

I’m pretty sure everyone understands this. Depth is a great thing and it would be nice to have someone that can produce just as well as Bell (hopefully) when he isn’t in there.

  • mlc43

I can’t see why he would be coming back for a second day if he wasn’t wanting to sign with us. I’m thinking this is almost a done deal. Could be wrong, though.

  • Paddy

MJD must realize by now that he’s not going to be a starter in the NFL, and that he won’t be paid anything close to 5 million.

  • MC

With a qb like Ben and players supporting such as Brown and Miller…MJD could be a better player on this team than on the jags if the focus isn’t entirely on him. I would love the signing.

  • There are still some halfway decent back up capable guys, available. Andre Brown, Moreno-provided he is not looking to get what San Diego gave Brown. And I would be happy with Blount, at the right price. So if MJD doesn’t sign not going to be upset at all. But for him to return for a second day, he liked what he heard.

  • srdan

When it comes to “team guys”, I firmly trust Colbert and Tomlin’s judgement.

  • steeltown

I think the lance Moore situation is a little different, he came in took a physical and im sure they met and discussed terms, but it all still teeters on the Cotchery decision

  • Brendon Glad

I hope they can work something out. It goes without saying that we can’t afford anything very high, since we have other more pressing needs still to fill, but I’ve been a fan of his since his NFL combine…and have admired him from afar while watching him kill us several times as well. Plays the game very hard no matter what his team is doing around him.

  • dkoy85

I’m hoping to read about a Timmons restructure, followed by the signing of Cotchery, MJD, and Carrington. Other than the Cotchery signing, it would be an upgrade at every position we let walk. Then we can focus on CB and WR in the draft. IMO it would be the most successful offseason(assuming they do well in the draft) in a long time.

  • steeltown

It sounds like most other Teams that are interested have atleast 2 quality RBs already on roster and im sure he has taken this into consideration. For example, NYJ are interested but they have Ivory, Mike Goodson and Bilal Powell currently on roster. He would be the unquestioned #2 in PIT and the first to start should god-forbid Bell go down

  • Steeler Wheeler

YES. MJD should have enough to offer any team as long as he’s not asked
to carry it 300 times. AND, I don’t want to disrespect Alaxander,
Maysonnet and Poole but yeah, Steelers are deparate at RB.

  • steeltown

Poole and/or Alexander would make great #3 or #4 guys, but I do not trust them just yet to be #2 backups. That may change in time.

  • dkoy85

Good call. I think his second day at the facility is a good sign something will get done.

  • Steeler Wheeler

BTW, lack of backups at ILB, RB, TE and C cost the Steelers an 0-4 start and the playoffs. In today’s injury-riddled NFL, depth is more important than ever. Steelers have none.

  • joed32

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the longtime member of the Jacksonville Jaguars is scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday. He also notes other teams are interested in the three-time Pro Bowl selection as well.

  • joed32

He played for the team in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 and started most of that time. A swing and miss is a guy who never becomes a starter or who is cut from the team early in his career.

  • Derick L Young

he is not on the team, so no need to think about FJ

  • Derick L Young

that is not a good excuse for a professional but you did just admit you think he left his team in the cold.

  • Derick L Young

why the heck would you want them to “split” carries… You want a back up RB to be just that, back up. maybe 5-12 touches a game. Something to that nature.

I hope the MJD deal happens…then as dkoy85 said below…they can focus on CB and WR in the draft, but also need to address a young NT and maybe a DE as well in the draft…I’d doubt LSH comes all the way back…a change of pace RB is still a thought.

  • Phil Colella

Has anyone heard any updates this morning, other than that he stayed over last night? I’m really excited with the potential to have MJD as a backup to Bell.

  • Derick L Young

    and there goes MJD.

  • Steve Ingram

theres no chance in hell he would sighn if he thought he would be a back up.did you not watch bell last year he still has alot of work a head of him, hes no starter yet.then again why would we bring in someone like jones drew if he was the clear cut starter?
