Report: Packers Free Agent RB James Starks To Visit With Steelers Monday

According to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Green Bay Packers unrestricted free agent running back James Starks has a visit scheduled with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.

Being as the Steelers currently need a backup to starting running back Le’Veon Bell, the news that Starks is being brought in for a visit isn’t overly surprising. Currently, the Steelers only have three other running backs other than Bell under contract for 2014 and none of them have played a down in the NFL.

Starks was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Packers after playing his college ball for the University at Buffalo. In his first four years in the league, the 6’2″, 218 pound running back has rushed for 1,427 yards and five touchdowns on 322 regular season carries. In addition, he’s caught 45 passes for 351 yards and a touchdown.

Starks hasnt been the most durable running back since he arrived in Green Bay as knee and hamstring injuries have forced him to miss several games over a four year span. In addition to his injury problems since being drafted, Starks also missed his senior season at Buffalo due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Be A Nice Back To Spell Bell For A Few Series. Still Like To See A Home Run Hitter Picked Up Somewhere Unless LSH Is Still In The Plans.

  • steelster

Sign him first thing Monday morning. He averaged 5.5 yards a carry last year. An upgrade over Dwyer.

  • Ben Saluri

Big back at 6’1 218 that catch the ball and move the sticks..IDEAL.

  • Curtis

    Please Colbert, make this happen!!

  • dave

Can we stop whining about letting Dwyer go now?

  • SteelersDepot

    Yep, I agree.

  • alex

could be a good addition, but id rather have somebody who can also help in the return game, namely as a PR to spell AB

  • Brian Tollini

Le’Veon, Starks, Poole, and a speed back on day 3. I could live with that.

  • falconsaftey43

If they do sign Starks, no doubt Tomlin will have him returning kickoffs haha. Couldn’t stand Jones and Dwyer back there when Sanders and Wheaton could have been so much better.

  • gary mcclanahan

How about signing Knowshon moreno, very fast back.. had a good season last year, would make a great back up

  • mlc43

Great in pass protection. I don’t know what his price tag would be.

We are running kinda low on money aren’t we? A little under 4M now? I’d still like to see Cotch signed and we have some work that needs done on the DL. I initially thought when they tagged Worilds that they had workable plans for a contract. I’m starting to have my doubts. Maybe Cotch is waiting for his contract until June? That doesn’t seem likely. I was hoping we wouldn’t have to rework Timmons but it might have to happen. Something has to happen because we have more holes than the draft can fill, lol.

  • cp72

Yeah add Ladaruis Perkins or Dri Archer and that’s not back rotation.

  • steelster

that is easy fix elsewhere and not a huge concern. Return guys are a dime a dozen.

  • Rob H

He’s going to want a decent amount of money, and at the very least a shot at starting, he won’t get either from the Steelers

  • Rob H

same here, I still can’t believe some of the angst over him and Woods.

  • James Kling

Some injury concerns, but runs with a purpose, nice frame, multi-purpose guy who can be the guy if Bell gets hurt.

  • shawn

depends … how much would he cost mas o menos ?

  • shawn

  • steelster

but we have gold, remember we are the black and gold or is that the saints?

  • shawn

id call it a wash … but definitely would not be disappointed at the pick up !

  • mlc43

We have the Rooney’s. With their Irish connection it has to be us with the pot ‘o gold.

  • shawn

if he can be had for vet min as suggested is possible… definitely think it would be a decent pick up … then we could still only use 1 late round draft pick on a change of pace guy in the draft !

  • shawn

Crazy how cheap these backs are these days … how the league changed … WHY in the world did the Browns & Giants pay Tate and Jennings so much … ridiculous if u ask me !

  • steeltown

  • steelster

nice one, two gold thumbs up for you and a well timed comment as far as holidays go.

  • joed32

What they need to do is sign Worilds to a new deal to free up some space.

  • mlc43

It’s the Browns, that’s one explanation there. NY..well, they are NY.

  • steelster

yes, get it done what is the hangup. could it be money, nahhh!!!

  • Virdin Barzey

Can’t believe some don’t understand the angst. It ain’t that hard people.

  • Ken

This guy plays like a NFL starting running back when he is on the field, if we can him as a back up it would be awesome… This guy is good.

  • Nicholas Allen Cotner

    I welcome this 110%!

  • jasonex003

we still need cb depth and a starter in the draft we need d line help … and a mlb if mosley or gilbert or denard fall to us i would be happy with any of the three check out donte moncrief wr 6’2 226 4.49 3rd 4th rd pick at so we dont need to draft evans if he is there

  • jasonex003

check out keith mcgill db 6’3 214 4.49 possible 3rd rd pick

  • Nicholas Allen Cotner

I really don’t see Gilbert or Evans being there at 15…….but it would be wonderful if either of them were.

  • I’ve followed his career ever since college here in buffalo. If you guys get this guy, you won’t be disappointed. The 8-10 carry a game range suits him perfectly. He busts off 10-15 yd runs regularly and provides that spark everyone always talks about.

Injuries, yeah, he has had them. But he’s always came back and none of them are lingering type.

  • sean mcmartin

Sounds like a good fit for the Steelers..Hope the O-line can stay healthy for once ,so these RB’s can perform..

  • Steelers12328882

The guy is an injury waiting to happen. Might be an upgrade over Dwyer, when he’s healthy, but I bet he won’t be as cheap as Dwyer was.

  • RyanW

Agreed everyones acting like we let Barry Sanders go. Theres a reason no one signed him after we released him last season and why this offseason the cards signed him for the vet minimum. Hes not that great he had 3 good games and a bunch of sub par ones and only TWO career TDs. He aint exactly hard to replace.

  • shawn

the browns .. soo true … but damn they scored with Flash Gordon … wish we had one of those !

  • alex

read the falcon above, and answer the question, WHY?

weve been searching for a punter since Seplveda, and our return game has been handled by our #1 reciever…that is not a plan, and yes, unfortunately, it is spending a ‘dime’ on ST…

that cant happen, and its an insult to the rest of our team and plan…

  • alex

I finally figured out Cotch, i read he was on the Steelers cruise, so, safe to assume he like us and will sign when his ship comes in!

  • falconsaftey43

Which is why it’s frustrating that they had such terrible returners back there on kickoffs. Just doesn’t seem like something Tomlin values for whatever reason.

  • jasonex003

I agree he is injured to often would rather bring back felix jones cheap he has speed he also gets hurt but stayed healthy last season and would probably cost the league minimum we will need to draft a rb late like 6th or 7th rd I boutgh lindys draft guide looking at cb and linebackers this yrs draft is so deep we should be able to get sum quality players and from what I understand the Steelers will be like 45 million plus under the cap next yr so thus yr is a rebuilding yr kinda.

  • Jollyrob68

I like him,Sign him as a back up.

  • Eric2291

Having watched every Packers game last season because I live in Wisconsin, I assure you that he’s an upgrade over Dwyer. Solid runner. Hope we get him.

  • Jollyrob68

    He’s visiting Carolina today

  • alex

and hes from Carolina 2, as DavenDave say on the podcast…

curses, now another big hole to fill, since when do we work for DPW?!

  • shawn

i liked Dwyer … but maybe ya
