Report: Steelers Free Agent DL Al Woods Signs With Titans

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Al Woods has indeed signed with the Tennessee Titans after visiting with them on Wednesday, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Woods will now play for new Titans defensive coordinator Ray Horton, who was the Steelers defensive backs coach several years ago prior to becoming the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator following the 2010 season.

The loss of Woods now puts the Steelers in a precarious position as far as their defensive line goes as the team currently only has two players on the line in defensive end Cameron Heyward and nose tackle Steve McLendon under contract that have a extensive playing time experience.

The Steelers might be forced to re-sign veteran free agent defensive end Brett Keisel should they also lose defensive end and former first-round raft pick Ziggy Hood to another team during the offseason.

The interest that Woods received during the early portion of free agency is a little bit shocking and now the Steelers have lost of player they invested two plus years into after claiming him off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks late in the 2011 season.

Woods was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints out of LSU in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He had spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seahawks prior to arriving in Pittsburgh a second time as the Steelers originally had signed him to their practice squad following his 2010 release by the Saints.

According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean, Woods signed a two-year, $5 million contract with the Titans.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • William Bigelow

    Well, that sucks ….

  • MailboxKid

I respect the steelers front office so I’m not criticizing them. However, from my perspective it seemed as though he was a good back up with a lot of potential. It’s further frustrating knowing we wasted our time coaching up a promising young player to watch him sign else wear for, I’m not sure what his contract looks like, a small percentage of the cap.

  • Tom

Disappointing….but hard to judge until the numbers come in.

  • Luke Shabro

I haven’t been too critical of any moves so far but I’m pretty upset they let Woods go. I felt like John Mitchell was doing a good job with him.

  • Luke Shabro

    Agreed 100%

  • Ryan Barton

Any DE’s on the market with some experience that are worth around $3 mil? DE is now a pretty thin position for the Steelers now.

  • William Bigelow

Woodley will be next to sign with the Titans

  • blackandgoldBullion

Crap! I wanted him back more than I wanted Hood. I thought he was really going to contribute this upcoming year.

  • blackandgoldBullion

Ray Horton’s there, right? And he’s been doing a pretty good job wherever he goes.

  • http://www.thesportsbonanza.com/ TheSportsBonanza

Steelers Currently have 3 DE on the team. Cameron Heyward, Nick Williams and Brian Arnfelt… Also The RB Depth Chart looks like this
    1.LeVeon Bell
    2.Alvester Alexander<– Who
    3.Tauren Poole <<– Who

Yikes..Better Resign Dywer, Howling or SOMEONE

  • Steelers12328882

Steelers gambled in waiting to see his market, and the Titans stole him. Too bad, but he was a backup anyways.

  • Chris S

I’m no expert or anything…but I’ve been hearing that the guy from BUF Alex Carrington has some good potential…theres even Adam Carriker out there (i think he’s coming off an injury though).

Of course Keisel could be back…and they seemed high on the 2 young DE’s Williams and Arnfelt. So who knows.

  • Eric MacLaurin

I think he can be replaced pretty easily for 5 mil.

  • Derick L Young

I am not going to shed a tear with a guy the Steelers let get away before and did a job well enough that a decent rookie can fulfill. JMO

  • gene mann

not sure how others feel but not good news Woods ability to play two spots and also played well when called upon. it really now moves dl back to the top of our needs

  • Derick L Young

They most likely resign Keisel at a later date. I like Brent Urban as a potential DE to draft.

  • gene mann

    Wooten or Carrington?

  • gene mann

i agree especially he could play 2 spots

  • gene mann

the issue we need a starter and backups

  • pittsburghjoe

I think this move gives support to the theory that they will draft Nix and move Mac to end. They will target a CB in round 2. I dont think you can make much of an argument that DLine is now their biggest need. They have no starting end. However, they do have 2 starting CB’s

  • Paddy

No loss there 2.5 Mil per for what?

  • Paddy

    John Mitchell need to go

  • Paddy

The Steelers def. line is awful, either its talent or coaching or both

  • Paddy

    Dwyer is done here

  • pat

My thoughts as well but not necessarily a cb in round 2 im thinking 3 and 5

  • Paddy

Horton is overrated to, what he ever do?

  • 804Stiller

The only good thing about running back is the value of the position is at an all-time low. They aren’t expecting a RB to be drafted in the first round again this year and there should be some serviceable free agent backs out there for minimal deals. I’m more worried about the DL at this point.

  • Ryan Barton

The Steelers are definitely going to have to sign a DE soon, or DE may be the first or second round pick. I think the best option would be to get a DE for around $3 mil that can start and get a DE somewhere in rounds 2-4. Keisel is getting pretty old, and it looks like the Steelers are moving on from a lot of the older players this year.

  • pittsburghjoe

I agree…they could very well go BPA in the second and as well they should.

  • pittsburghjoe

    I pick or Someone….

  • blackandgoldBullion

I may be mistaken, but he might be the guy who helped build the Browns and Cardinals into Top 10 defenses. But I might be mistaken.

  • WIINGY

Carrington looks to have the prototype 34 end build. Never seen him play though.

  • Steelers12328882

True, but him being signed on the 2nd day like that means his value was high. I’m not sure the Steelers were in a position to pay a backup whatever it is he was paid.

  • Steelers12328882

Woods was a backup. They still have a chance to sign Hood or Keisel.

  • John A Stewart

We are a farm team for the NFL……

  • pittsburghjoe

For all intensive purposes, so are Hood and Keisel.

  • Steelers12328882

I hear ya, but not as far as our current depth is concerned.

  • hchristi15

I love Truitt out of ND, but extremely doubtful he’d be there for us in the 2nd round. Any way we would trade back in the 1st with Cleveland or San Francisco to try and grab Truitt, since they both have multiple mid and late round picks? Also, it appears that there is better value there at 26 or 30 than at 15, unless a top guy drops.

  • pittsburghjoe

Im wondering if they may wait and see if Hageman slips to their spot in the 2nd. I still think Mac would make a real good end and a good NT. However you may upgrade both positions if you get Nix. That kills 2 birds with one stone (Nix NT – Mac -DE).

  • Shannon Stephenson

Sadly that is what it seems like.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Truitt is my man crush,,,he has power, size, and agility for the position.

  • cencalsteeler

I liked to watch Al Woods improve his game as the season progressed. I was one who was hoping to watch more of his progress in the black and gold, but on the bright side, the team must look highly on Williams and Arnfelt. Best of luck Al!

  • Shannon Stephenson

I wanted us to draft Carrington in the draft and Wooten has played decent for the Bears.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Wow,,,you need to look at this guys resume for us…he has turned many, many late rounds picks into starters for us…the guy is a whiz.

  • ScottB

Should have ponied up to keep this guy…unless one of the PS guys is farther along then we know

  • cencalsteeler

It seems that way but it happens to all teams. A perfect example is Mike Mitchell.

  • AndyR34

And he was a back-up that did his best work on two 8-8 teams. He’s not worth $5M over 2 years…or whatever Tenn. is paying.

  • Virdin Barzey

Not sure why this one wasn’t locked up way earlier. Prefer Woods over Hood….and I’m not the only one. Hood is still on the market. Wonder why….

  • ScottB

I was hoping Hood would take his almost worthless services elsewhere and open up some snaps for Woods.

  • Blue

Make a move and sign Terrance Mt. Cody.

  • Blue

Nix is a bum, where was he at vs Bama in championship game?

  • John A Stewart

We are a farm team for the NFL.

  • hchristi15

Imagining him and Heyward together on the ends is scary good!!! I feel if we are able to get Truitt and then Carrethers later in the draft that would be huge for the d-line.

  • j m

The phrase is “intents and purposes.” Not trying to be a jerk, but I would hate to think you might say or write that at work and have people get the wrong impression.

  • j m

I take it we get zero compensatory pick for this…? But what about losing Dwyer?

  • Smashmouth

i think kiesel still has some gas in the tank hood has been a real question mark in my mind but if bret signs for vet minimum i think he’d be worth taking the chance on we still need proven players

  • j m

If you’re also a Pirate fan, you’re used to it.

  • Douglas Andrews

Woods was a good backup glad he got him a decent payday. I’m sure the FO will find a suitable replacement for him. Might even get a B Kiesel sighting sooner rather than later.

  • Matt Manzo

I’d rather have a 2nd or 3rd round rookie competing with Arnfelt and Williams, than Woods.

  • Milliken Steeler

Eating a hot dog and being used as a turn style. He is not a top 15 pick.

  • Steven Vincent

Letting Al Woods slip away was a big mistake. That is a versatile player who is ready now to be a good starter. It’s this year’s version of letting Lewis go to the Saints. You spend years getting them ready to be starters and then you let another team reap the benefit. Does not make sense.

  • Milliken Steeler

So you think its a good idea to get rid of the only back with a 4,0 ypc avg three years running however, its a good idea to install a turnstile like Nix at number 15? I don’t think so.

I would rather try a 6’8″ 360 lb guy at NT like Daniel Mccullers in the 5th or 6th round. This way if he is a bust, it wont hurt as bad as a two down player like Nix in the first round would.

  • JAMESH

Ostensibly. Maybe Colbert has something up his sleeve. The suspense this year prior to the draft is more intense than other recent years.

  • shawn

    another waste … tisk tisk

  • shawn

ya wow … how fast that changed … DL was not that big of a need before it was decent … now with the loss of Woods and likely Hood .. what the heck were they thinking ….

  • shawn

once again a bad gambler … Steelers FO should NEVER go to VEGAS !!!

  • shawn

Yes you are right they should have locked him up earlier … they are terrible at judging young talent .. it has to hit them in the face before they see it … yet they payed guys like Worild’s and Mitchell big money with little proven ability … very ironic indeed !

  • shawn

really ? not sure i agree with that one …. also dont want a 2nd or 3rd pick on a DL when it can be used on a impact player !

  • shawn

Very Astute observation … wish the FO was half that keen !

  • NW86

Exactly. I’m disappointed to lose him and I’m sure the FO is too. But if the Titans gave him a long-term deal with several million guaranteed, you can’t knock the FO for not investing that much in him.
