Report: Steelers Sign Bills Free Agent LB Arthur Moats

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Pittsburgh Steelers will sign Buffalo Bills free agent linebacker Arthur Moats to a one-year deal.

Moats, who was scheduled to be in Pittsburgh on Monday for a visit, started 12 games for the Bills last season and recorded 54 total tackles.

The James Madison product should have position flexibility as he has played both inside and outside during his career. His natural position is outside, however, and the Steelers really need depth there now that LaMarr Woodley has been sent packing.

In total, Moats played 301 snaps on defense for the Bills in 2013. In addition to his play on defense, Moats should be a core special teams player for the Steelers if he makes the final 53 man roster.

In December 2013, Moats was named the Bills’ Walter Payton Man of the Year for 2013.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Nice- Dave, do you think this is a depth move or a move to push Williams in camp? I guess when it comes down to it. it’s depth, but I’m more interested to know if he’s capable of competing with Williams.

  • dkoy85

Also, it looks to me like they’ll have to restructure Timmons to get Carrington and a RB. Or is there still room assuming this is a vet min signing?

  • AzheDraven

Yes! I have heard from bills fans that they didn’t want to lose this guy. I was thinking yesterday if this signing may avoid steelers from signing Harrison, hopefully not, but I like our chances with Worilds/Jones and Timmons/VW/Moats with Garvin, Harrison and Spence as backups.
It’s still a one year deal but anyways let’s hop on the “Don’t cross the Moats” train. Lol.

Depths is coming along… Keep going Steelers

  • pittsburghjoe

Why just a one year deal? 2 would have been nice…it would have given us some flexibility for this year and next. More so…next.

  • SteelersDepot

Might just be a qualifying contract for minimum with a reduced cap charge

  • 804Stiller

Man, I like this for depth, special teams and if none of the young inside backers steps up(Williams, Gavin or Spence). I wonder if this ends the Harrison talk or would they still consider him for depth.

  • steeltown

Nice! This guy should come cheap, provides versatility and is good against the run

  • Jason

My good friend is a Bills fan and says Moats was very well liked in Buffalo. Says he was a victim of the numbers game and hates to see him go. Always like to gauge the former teams fan reaction. Similar comments from Saints fans on Moore

  • steeltown

He will most definitely push V.Williams, but also he has versatility and can hopefully contribute outside, think Sylvestor but 20lbs heavier and with talent and playing experience

  • srdan

Maybe Moats wated one year to prove he is worht more than a minimum.

  • blackandgoldBullion

Now they might wait until after the draft. If they get someone they like, fine, otherwise James will probably still be available.

  • srdan

    And a ST stud

  • treeher

    Stupid. One highlight?

  • dkoy85

    Great to hear!

  • StarSpangledSteeler

You’re missing the fun. It’s about the song (re-written).

  • cp72

Keyaron Fox 2.0. Nice depth signing.

  • steeltown

I would think if they don’t land OLB in the draft, Harrison will be brought in immediately

  • srdan

    lol

  • treeher

I know, he’s got “Don’t cross the Moats” tatooed on his back. Just, whoever did the video, make an effort to put a few highlights on it!

  • srdan

I do this as well. Especially when we play teams I like to listen to their podcasts/radio stations to see what they think of our squad. People are terrified of AB.

  • steeltown

He just turned 26yrs old too… I hope this works out for both sides

  • srdan

Whats the word on teh other Bills LB/DE we were toying with?

  • Axe Skot

    That hurt

  • dkoy85

I might have to start doing this. Hopefully they start to fear Brown, Bell, and Wheaton/Draft pick :-D

  • Eric MacLaurin

    That’s what I was hoping.

What is the Payton award anyway? Hopefully its more of a most like to succeed than most surprising success….or best guy with the media. :)

  • blackandgoldBullion

That Fox was possessed on special teams!

  • srdan

I like competition in camp. We have had some years where we were severely lacking competition at positions. There are a bunch this year that are penciled in, but far from stone. Of course, this is good and bad, but it’s very good for a young team.

  • blackandgoldBullion

Ah, how the world has changed…. remember when the Bills used to sign ex-Steelers? On the other hand, I don;t give a damn, as their D is on the rise and their running game is excellent considering they are no threat in the pass game. Until this year anyway.

  • AzheDraven

Maybe they want him to play his college position DE.
Anyone thinks Tomlin may be interested in Pryor since PFT says he’s on his way out? I mean, he is commited to Landry, but I think he wanted to draft Pryor or something like that.

  • http://thereactionblog.com Michael Stickings

Nice move. I live in Toronto and tune in sometimes to Buffalo sports radio, and the impression I got was that he was held in pretty high regard both on and off the field (a good guy and a competent if not outstanding player), though if I recall he’d lost his starting spot by the end of last season. If this is just about depth, he could be a great addition to the team given his flexibility, but I wonder if he’ll have a chance for a starting spot next to Timmons.

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

Baltimore Ravens podcast definitely afraid of Bell as well

  • steeltown

I think he struggled in coverage, but he is a solid run defender. Being that we struggled defending the run last season this signing makes perfect sense

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

I like this signing a lot, You basically trade him for foote, and he is 7 years younger and plays ST.

  • srdan

I think the best one this year was following the bungles game. Not that I advocate what Garvin did, but it rubbed salt on a wound (K Rivers). Some of the comments in the “jungle” were calling for Garvin to be criminally prosecuted. They were saying that it ruined their superbowl chances. It was ridiculous. Just be careful posting on other sites, most non divisional games people appreciate posts, but teh browns, ravens and bungles dont really care for our opinion.

  • SFIC

You gotta’ love the manner in which the Steelers are patching up the holes in their depth chart….and with the patience they’re doing it.

  • steeltown

I would love to have some sensible divisional fans on here, problem is most are just so called “trolls” and have nothing of any merit to bring to the table. I used to comment on the NFL site and had a few decent divisional fans that were quite respectful and knowledgeable, but it seems few and far between, sometimes people just want to bicker

  • dkoy85

Colbert wasn’t lying when he said they’d be more active this year- and there could be a DE, RB, and OLB signed by the start of the season. Crazy!

  • T R

    Great post Star Spangled

  • Matt Manzo

I like this signing! Still hoping we bring back Harrison too!

  • george

O No. We just got picked for Hard Knocks.

  • alex

big value, and big flexibility…the team knows exactly what its doing, just keeps hiring quality people to fill holes…
