Steelers Free Agent TE/FB David Johnson Signs With Chargers On Wednesday

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now lost one of their own unrestricted free agents as tight end David Johnson has signed with the San Diego Chargers on Wednesday.

Johnson was originally drafted by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Arkansas State and mostly played fullback and on special teams during his fist few years in the league.

Johnson was lost for the 2012 season after tearing up his knee during the first preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles and that injury resulted in him losing his job to then-undrafted rookie free agent Will Johnson.

David Johnson returned from his knee injury in 2013 only to have his season cut short again by a broken wrist suffered in the Week 6 game against the New York Jets.

It is very unlikely the Steelers had plans to re-sign David Johnson this offseason and now they will hope he makes the Chargers roster and plays enough to warrant a compensatory draft pick next offseason. He reportedly signed a two-year contract.

Always like David Johnson but was never more than an average player. Hope he does well in SD

  • steeltown

Good for him. Hopefully he succeeds.

  • StrengthOfVictory

In truth, every since Will Johnson’s emergence, I’ve sort of forgotten about David. Best of luck in San Diego?

  • Derick L Young

Always liked him but if you can’t get healthy, you are not much help.

  • Iron Cadet

I hope will Johnson will become a bigger part of this offense now

  • steeltown

    Yep

  • srdan

    truth

  • richheddleson

Won’t the signing of Mike Mitchell offset any comp pick we may get from losing our free agents?

  • shawn

I think this was an EXCELLENT signing by the Bolts … no downside but a lot of upside !! that guy from OU is looking more like a late round pick now !

  • steeltown

Yes, it will most likely offset the comp pick we would recieve for Emmanuel Sanders departure

  • StrengthOfVictory

Dave: Does the Lions’ signing of Golden Tate to a 5-year contract increase the chances of Mike Evans falling to the Steelers @ 15? I saw many mock drafts that predicted it would be Detroit who grabbed him with their pick. Doesn’t mean they can’t/won’t, but Tate’s 5-year deal sounds like they think they’ve found their #2 WR.

  • StrengthOfVictory

The Browns released Brandon Weeden? That’s old news. ;)

  • blackandgoldBullion

Well, that virtually assures us that the Lions will draft CB Gilbert, so we can probably forget about him.

  • Douglas Andrews

I always thought DJ would emerge into our stellar FB/TE but he’s had some bad luck with injuries and now that W. Johnson has came on the scene there’s really no room for him on the roster. Hope it works out for him with the Chargers.

  • steeltown

Like mentioned, I think this means they go CB

  • cp72

It can’t hurt may still have to dodge Buffalo and St Louis

  • Matt Manzo

I’m hearing that Sanders is close to signing with the Jags!

  • Steelers12328882

Sucks. Always liked him, but obviously injuries set him back.

  • alex

    bad for him

  • pat

I was thinking the same but then started thinking someone will trade up to grab him

  • shawn

who says he wouldnt be healthy this year … hmmm

  • shawn

will johnson and dave johnson are 2 completely different types of players …. i saw a lot of growth from DJ last year before his injury (wasn’t a big fan of his before that)

call me crazy but i saw a little bit of a poor mans Antonio Gates (very poor lol) but i think thats why they picked him up ,… I’m not even kidding !

  • shawn

    just great ….

  • shawn

sux … I’m higher on gilbert than initially .. just cuz i want some damn playmakers back there … our lack of int has to end sometime !

  • shawn

i thought he was an excellent 3rd TE … not sure why u think he wouldnt fit on the roster

  • Smashmouth

he was a fair 3rd te but if he wasn’t able to stay healthy why would you think they would try to keep him we have already had too many non productive players under contract due to injuries

  • shawn

is he supposed to get injured every year … what makes one think that he would get injured this year …. the bolts apparently have not problems with it … funny they picked him up … because i did see a little Antonio gates in him last yr …. seriously that is who he reminded me of !

  • steeltown

I can play that game… who says he would be?

  • shawn

    odds thats what

  • Douglas Andrews

I wouldn’t put too much stock into the Chargers signing they need someone to add to their TE depth. Gates is going into his 13th year so I’m sure they’re looking at some other options. He’s clearly not the same player.
