Steelers Free Agent TE/FB David Johnson Signs With Chargers On Wednesday

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now lost one of their own unrestricted free agents as tight end David Johnson has signed with the San Diego Chargers on Wednesday.

Johnson was originally drafted by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Arkansas State and mostly played fullback and on special teams during his fist few years in the league.

Johnson was lost for the 2012 season after tearing up his knee during the first preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles and that injury resulted in him losing his job to then-undrafted rookie free agent Will Johnson.

David Johnson returned from his knee injury in 2013 only to have his season cut short again by a broken wrist suffered in the Week 6 game against the New York Jets.

It is very unlikely the Steelers had plans to re-sign David Johnson this offseason and now they will hope he makes the Chargers roster and plays enough to warrant a compensatory draft pick next offseason. He reportedly signed a two-year contract.
