Steelers GM Kevin Colbert Says QB Ben Roethlisberger Hasn’t Asked For A “Tall” Wide Receiver

Since the 2013 season ended, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported that sources have told him that the Pittsburgh Steelers “intend” on drafting a “tall” wide receiver for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. While that very well might end up being the case, Roethlisberger apparently hasn’t asked the team to go that route.

In an interview with Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was asked if Roethlisberger has made a request for a “tall” wide receiver.

“No, he hasn’t” said Colbert. “Everybody wants big, fast – but guys get open, too. Guys that know how to get open. Our best receiver is 5’10”. I’m sure teams would rather have him than a big guy. So, size, sure it’s important and there are plenty of big receivers in this draft, but really if you get caught up just looking for a specific, you’ll miss out on a good player.”

The Steelers signed former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Lance Moore on Friday and he would need a few phone books to be considered “tall”. Moore, however, is a solid third down wide receiver that works well out of the slot and should be a suitable replacement for Jerricho Cotchery, who signed last week with the Carolina Panthers.

While Roethlisberger apparently hasn’t asked for a wide receiver that can easily reach the cookie jar on the top shelf of the Steelers breakroom, he might very well end up with one just the same as the 2014 draft class is loaded with them this year.
